We are following our dreams to build a 40ft pilot cutter inspired wooden boat.
Two years into the build we decided it was time to start sharing our journey with you all!
“Tarkine” is built from sustainably sourced Tasmanian Timbers, she is cold moulded and will displace 16ton when she kisses the water.
For the majority of the time it has been the two of us and our faithful dog Obie. We hope to get Tarkine floating and sail to Iefke’s home waters of the Netherlands, got to dream big!
Sit back and enjoy the adventure.

Another nice one. Awesome detail on the hatch sides!
Thanks Rick! Always appreciated, cheers
Goodonyas! 🎉
Cheers Matey!!
giving it a bit of drama mate
Столько лет строить лодку.....А ходить по морям то когда на ней будете????
Oh another two years maybe! Haha
Beautiful! I was wondering if I could draw a side profile of your boat with shading and details and stuff, they make nice wall displays- I’ve done one for Flying Coney and De Wadden. I don’t charge I just enjoy drawing them, if your interested I’ll contact you on insta if thats good
Another very interesting episode. Re the side pieces for the sliding hatch, I was wondering if you had considered fitting toughened glass each side, instead of the decorative wood infill, was just a thought. Ted
Matt, armoured glass wedges in your sloped sliding hatch frames would have been very practical, or not?
is that yo yo ma on a cello? chineesy and quite lovely.
i love the view of Tarkine from a bit above from the back. really shows the lovely hull form -and the curvature of the deck is now giving the boat a really attractive sense of volume. so cool.
Great video !
great vid. I like the music on this one.
Thanks! Glad to hear it, cheers
Be careful the company you keep. My cousin decided to imitate the Kardashians and it killed her... then itself in front of the police, leaving two burdens behind. Virtue signalling is fun until you die from it.
Good stuff, nice detail. IDK what happened I got unsubscribed
Oh no!! Well we are glad you are back and thanks!
love the cut of your jib maties,
Just found your channel and love it. 2 real people building a boat by themselves and not using others to build it for them
Amazing! We are so happy you found us and you enjoy our build! More fun to come! Haha
the decorative inlay looks great
Thanks! A bit of hard work and accuracy paid off! Cheers
Hi Guys, lovely work as usual. I really enjoy taking time out from my build to watch you both doing such a brilliant job. You help keep me motivated. Dogs and boats, gotta love it! Take care, Steve and Maple
Hey Steve, glad you are enjoying it! We giggled at your worry of the temperatures on the last episode, we are very jealous! Struggling to get varnish to go off right now down here… cheers Matt Iefke and Obie!
In de vorige video zag ik dat de portholes al gemaakt waren 😉😊 Always look forward for the next video
The look at the inside wood of the porthole at 23:31 is fabulous. It's looking into your past history with the boat. Must make you very pleased with the outcome of your efforts.
Yeah it’s very interesting looking at the “core” of the cabin. We are super happy yes! Thanks
At the risk of sounding like a school report, good work all round from carpentry to editing.
Yay! Didn’t get an F so that’s great hahah
no long sleeve shirts when using the tables !
Clamping. Non-woodworkers can’t appreciate the excitement of those moments. Nice segment.
Hahahah very true! Thanks
absolutely great watching - also love the music- could you let us know who the music is by - well done you two ❤
Thank you! The music in this episode is all by a composer called JCar. I really like it too! Thank you for following along!
Fantastic work love your narration on every step you are making and it’s coming on to winter so you old dog is conserving it’s energy for the real cold days, it’s hard work laying there watching the pair of you building your boat 😂😂
Enjoying your very understated KZread’s. Only disappointment is your desire to give up on the gaff rig. I sailed my engineless 30 ton pilot cutter ‘Carlotta’ for 35 years with the gaff rig and came to appreciate what a wonderful, handy, rig it is when combined with the Appledore roller reefing. There’s a reason why nearly all modern race boats have switched back to gaff rig ( or square topped mains as they prefer to call it). 30% more wind 30’ above the surface. Most efficient aspect ratio when off the wind is 1:1. And what was most fun for me is the ability to make the rig more efficient….make your own iron work aloft out of carbon fibre, carbon fibre or aluminum gaff and top mast, synthetic rigging (a la Tally Ho). All fun all fast and efficient. Read about Curlew and get the spirit.
You and Leo have the same hairdresser?!?
Inlay is a very nice way to finish it. Very slick
Thankyou!!
The sliding hatch and the portholes are details that accentuate the good looks of Tarkine. Keep up the the good work, it's allways a pleasure to see your videos.
Oh thanks, very kind of you to say. Much appreciated!
Tarkine will be the talk of the mooring come the day, fantastic workmanship from you both, good luck from the UK
Oh yes that would be lovely!! Thankyou!
Very odd looking porthole!!
Love it. Love it. Love it.😍
Thanks mate!
Great episode as usual. Thanks for the skill and dedication 👍😎😊
Thanks Eric! Much appreciated!
I don't mean to add further challenges... nevertheless, while listening to your points on the hatch, it came to mind the following: Your hatch could slide back and forth, AND, tilt up and down a few centimetres. Thus, in the likely event of waves spraying over the cabin or rain, you simply lift it up, and you have a dry seating spot to keep an eye on everything... for visibility, include a decent sized glass/plexiglass on the top of the sliding part. That also provides light to the interior. In addition, with the slide and tilt function you won't need a spray hood, as the canvas never last long anyway. Just sharing a useless idea 🤪🤣 Cheers and txs for the great videos 👍
Hi from the UK 🇬🇧
Hello there!! Glad we have some British following! Cheers
Mooi om te zien hoe alles samen wordt bedacht en gemaakt wordt. Petje af !
Dank je wel! De samenwerking is wat het ook zo leuk maakt. Bedankt voor de interesse in ons project!
What’s the name of the music please?
This video we used a composer called JCar. I live his sound too!
Your weather this May is a mirror image of ours in Washington State. It seems like you should have more working time with the epoxy in these cooler temperatures making intricate work a little more forgiving of mistakes, not that many are made on this project.I love to watch this boat coming together, thanks for sharing your progress with us.
Safety First. Never have loose clothing near moving belts, blades or rotating machinery. !0 mins 40 seconds for example. Shirt sleeve. All good stuff otherwise.
Good point. It definitely looks unsafe in the video. It didn't feel that way in real life but you make a good point. Safety first! Thank you
g Great music loved it.
Thanks! Good to hear so
Once again, loved your video . The raised side panels are lovely
Glad you like them! Thankyou!
Another wonderful video! Thank you.
Our pleasure! Thanks for following along!
I generally dislike music in videos, but your selections are excellent.
Well well that’s a good thing! Glad to know that. Cheers!
That camber you made with the table saw, like what? That was so trick, looks really nice. That hatch seemed so complicated but you’ve made it and the cover’s curve looks perfect. I will tell you I was on the edge of my seat watching you cut that porthole, oh baby, what a beautiful hole there Matt!!! Obie is so funny, what an adorable guy!! Great episode you guys, loved it!
Hi,your attention to detail is very well worthwhile and looks great.I also enjoyed the music,cheers.Roly🇬🇧.
Thanks as always Roly! Cheers
You are very welcome,I always look forward to your posts on KZread👍.
A lot of thought goes into every choice in design and I appreciate you sharing your discussions and your journey. Thanks.
Ah yes we are glad you liked our little discussions on the shape and size. A bit part of building boats is exactly that!
Great to have a new video but 😱 when chamfering that panel 🫣🤣. 🇬🇧
Scary hey ahaha
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River you’ll get good viewing figures! 🤕😆
When releasing the glued-up hatch did it retain that shape or does it have a tendency to spring back a little?
No it’s held its shape surprisingly well, we were expecting a bit of spring back but it was very minimal
Time went by too quickly. The music was inspirational. The dog run, too die for, was in stitches. Traditionally most hatch companionways are level. Most open, then duck and enter. This upward sloping hatch is a first for me. Those portlights will look great once bedded.
Oh good to hear! Yes Obie can run a little when he wants to! Glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River can you tell us what the music is? It was certainly a step up from the background stuff many KZreadrs use. And it made the episode even more enjoyable. Thanks.
Oh that’s amazing to hear! Thankyou. We will have to check, but it’s an artist that makes their music available so we don’t get in trouble for copyright but we will have a look
Regarding the angled sides of the hatch: instead of putting the wood panels in, why not put tempered glass in them ? That way you get additional light into the cabin. :-). Great work as always.
Oh yes a nice idea! We didn’t actually think of that… maybe on the back doors we can also..
Will you be building a dodger.
Yeah maybe one day but for now it’s not a priority, we will make a dodger as soon as the waves and rain start to annoy us!
