$500 Ford Ranger - 2021 Cheap Truck Challenge

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The guys over at Junkyard Digs invited me to a cheap off roader build off where we had just $1000 to buy a vehicle and $1000 to spend on parts for it. Within reason we could also borrow things we had lying around as well as sell parts off our vehicle to help the build.

Just the electric hydraulic pumps cost four hundred bucks. Easily another 500 maybe a thousand for both plows. Pretty good deal for 500 bucks for that truck. the way market place and stuff is now people want $10,000 for a truck that cost $2000 two years ago

Don't wait around for Kevin - you already did the cheap truck challenge and won hands down and could do that again anytime. Continuing the project would give some new material and perhaps see how nice you can get that truck while still keeping to a reasonable budget. This would be a great reference for anyone wanting to do the same and the rest of us will also learn something from it.

My brother used to have an old Ranger 4x4, we went wheeling with it back when you could take trucks on the Lake McBride off-road park trails with a bunch of other Ranger/Bronco II guys, it was a ton of fun it that little truck. The only thing it really needed was diff lockers, but being so narrow and light it was a great off roader.

My first brand new truck was a 1986 Ranger 4x. On the way home from the dealer I got rear ended by a semi. Made three payments before I got it back. So I didn’t have a lot of respect for the poor little truck. I was out running some fire trails when I found a water hole that was deeper than I thought. I found out the hard way that the engine air intake was next to the headlights. Hydro locked the engine, bent three connecting rods and shattered two pistons. Only had 27k miles on it.

Yet another memory brought back! I drove one of those as a work vehicle back when they were new. They are surprisingly good on dirt, but seem to bog down with stock tires in mud. You've avoided the worst part of my work truck by having a manual, the auto trans was a sloppy mess unless you had a substantial load on board, loaded up the torque converter and shift points made more sense, but cruising around empty it always seemed to over rev with mushy shifts. Ironically that is the opposite of the Ford full size truck auto trans in the same era, which loved to up shift and hated to down shift.

I'd say keep going in the off road direction with this. This thing would be unstoppable with the air filter moved higher and nearer to the firewall, a spool in the rear and lunch box locker in the front, maybe some knobby tires that hold air and call it a day on it.

I feel your pain with that backwards tow, I've had to get home with a broken transmission that only worked in reverse and it wasn't fun. It seems as if you might have shorted the ignition with that wall of water the truck pushed, because although I've never sucked water into an air intake it sounds like a more fatal problem and you did get the truck started again. Thanks for another great video!
