Can My $500 Ford Ranger Move Over 12" Of Snow?

We had between 12 to 14 inches of snow fall last night, lets see if the Ford Ranger that I bought for $500 can cope. If you want to see me fail trying to off road in this truck watch my first video here: • $500 Ford Ranger - 202...

When pushing snow and you start losing traction, lift the plow blade up about two inches of the ground. This adds the weight of the plow to your front wheels and increases traction.

I was hoping you’d keep the plow! Get a set of chains and 500lbs of ballast and you'll be unstoppable in 4 low.

I sold Fords back in the 90s and the Ranger was never recommended to run a plow. People did but the front springs and drivetrain were not engineered to handle it. Looks like you might be out of warranty coverage so I guess it doesn't matter. Plus if you break something I imagine you might be able to fix it yourself. Fun video!

Sounds like you were 10 years too late, this truck is from the 80’s and back then ford offered lots of different packages for the ranger including a snow plow one. It included a beefed up frame , heavier springs, airbags, heavy duty shocks, 60 amp alternator and a auxiliary trans cooler for the auto trans.

I think the strategy is to start as far right as you want to go while pushing the snow to the right, then work left with each pass and continue to throw the snow to the right. Yes, you may have to re-plow some as you finish up, but at least it'll get done. When you start at the left and try to work right, you're making each successive pass heavier.

I think you mis wrote this statement, if you start at the right and your blade is angled right, each time you move left then you are just flipping snow over one blade width and filling each pass back over , deep drifts that you can't push take off the top half then take the lower half on the next pass.

Steve, Hey there! I plowed my house and business for years with a Ranger (both and 88 2.8 and an 07 4.0 V6's) and we get plenty of snow here in PA. I had only all Season tires. Filled the gas tank every time before a storm and a couple of times I had to shovel some snow into the bed and not take as big a bites as you did. Only got it stuck a couple of times in 24" plus snow. I learned not to try to take to pavement in the real deep stuff on a first pass if it was over a foot. Top it and come back for a second pass.

I still use the same Snow Bear plow I bought in 2002 ish? manual tilt, power lift with an electric winch. It's still doing the thing to this day. I did have to replaced the winch a couple of time but $49 harbor freight jobs keep it going. :)

I have a 1986 chevy s-10 that I plow with. Have been using it for plowing for the past 6 years. Its a 2.8L with a 5 speed. It has 3 dead cylinders and 268K miles. I put it in 4L 1st gear and it just goes and goes. I also have some ballast in the bed and tire chains if I need them. I have only been pulled out 3 times in 6 years. Good to see a ranger can do good as well.

Considering the depth of snow, and the length behind that massive shop, pretty impressive when it was probably doing driveways most of its plow life, quite good considering the truck! a way better use for it then blown up off road!

I did use to drive one of these as a work truck back when they were new. Some of the jobs were off pavement and the ground was generally chewed up by heavy equipment, so the 4x4 was used pretty frequently. By plowing snow on pavement you've avoided the biggest limitation on the Ranger which was the tire size, since they tended to bog down when the ground was soft. On a paved road with snow the ground pressure is an asset! Thanks for the video!

I miss my lil 87 Ranger. Was a junkyard dog but was dependable, fun, stronger than anyone expected & so easy to work on when it needed anything done. But 90% of the time it was just maintenance, tune ups, oil changes, brakes & tires. Had to sell it once my daughter was too big to sit in the middle & got elbowed by me whenever I had to shift. Lol

Keep the Ranger is top mechanical shape for this 'plowing duty' you're doing with it. No doubt you know that U-joints take the most punishment when plowing. Your Ranger impressed me, but keep in mind that as in eating a burger, you take one bite at a time, i.e. plow half blade widths at a time. It'll take a bit longer to clear your lot, but you reduce the 'danger' of high centering the truck.

When you plow in happy snow straight blade first just go over the whole area then backtrack angle your blade until you get to a point to where there's too much and then straight blade that and keep going on until you're done. Don't try to get it all in one pass it might take two or three times over a lot that size

You'll learn how to do it smarter every season. Try something new once in a while. Moving snow is kinda like mowing super tall grass with a side chute, except you can choose direction. It sounds counter intuitive, but I'd start furthest away from the shop when it's this deep - you will move some snow twice but you make up for it in speed. Also get some weight in the tray ;-)
