I bought a Dodge Ram for $500 on Facebook Marketplace…. Let’s fix it

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Not too much to put here folks. This “new to me” dirty dodge needed a home and I had just the space for it. Cheap enough we could overlook her obvious issues, and with all the potential to be this years firewood delivery machine! So here’s to the first video with her, and some of the immediate fixes we made after getting her home. Stay tuned to see many more videos I’m sure as we drive and fix her up.

Between 2012 and 2014 I bought several cars for about $500 off of Craigslist or marketplace. Most of them were very dirty and had seized engine. I would spend 2-3 weeks on each car. Used parts are easily available in my area. By the time , I was done working on them, they ran and looked very new. I enjoyed working on these cars. You can never beat the feeling of turning a key on and drving a car you spent so much time at. It is a joy for every mile.

That's the problem with marketplace. I recently bought a Mercury sable and there were four other people ahead wanting to look at it. Somehow I managed to get it because all four of them didn't show up. I consider that a stroke of luck. It was owned by a little old lady who took immaculate care of it but her family took away her keys when she had a run-in with a yellow safety pole that dinged the driver side door. I ended up fixing the damage by pulling off the plastics on the inside and manually working the dent out and now it looks as good as new. At only 125000 miles she runs good as new. Did I mention I only paid $1000 for it?

I always wondered why dodge went so far with the styling when other trucks of the era were square and simple. I liked the square and simple… but after driving them and then owning some for myself I really get it. It was a huge step in a different direction for trucks to come. And dodge really made their trucks look like nothing else first and that style continued for generations of rams afterwards. Great trucks, good engines (in this generation anyway) and strong as an ox for what it is

@@MXguy95 Dodge had been selling basically the same truck since 1972 and had less than 5% market share. The genius behind the second gen ram was making it look so different from the Ford and Chevy. Love it or hate it, it got attention and their market share went up 4 or 5X during that generation. If they had put a square simple front end on it, nobody would’ve given it any attention.

Yeah and when you find them unless it's a fleet ordered company truck base model it's usually the 3.9 litre 239 cubic inch V6 very rarely is it a 5.2 litre 318, or the 5.9 litre 360 gas motors and a buddy of mine had a very frequent maintenance truck but started slipping because he couldn't afford to keep that up and other than the Indiana salt on the roads eating up the sheetmetal of the truck, it was 3 below zero and the 112k truck acquired a water pump leak at the bottom of the water pump and you couldn't see it,we just knew it was overheating and still had zero heat in the cab, well after two gallons of antifreeze and a gallon and a half of well water it finally stopped overheating and he drove it two miles down the road to his mom and dad's and said when he got up at 7am it was halfway down the radiator and after a few hours at 24 degree weather he got it to run and then went to top off the coolant and had to dig ice chunks out of the radiator and after that he drove it to town to put gas in it and go job hunting,,well he made it to the gas station and with a complete new fuel system it didn't want to start and left to go to McDonald's and grab a bite to eat and it instantly started overheating, drove it to Walmart and let it cool off and it was completely out of antifreeze so he went into Walmart and put antifreeze back in it and shut the hood ended up only going to three of the eight places he planned to put application and give his resume to.. he started driving it back out in the country towards his mom and dad's and got two half a mile from my house and it started overheating and rattling, and the truck had steam puffing out of the front of the 98 ram st long bed bare bones except the 360 and power windows, didn't even have am fm stereo cassette player, just Chrysler am fm clock radio, non ac, and we checked it over and then shut it off and let it cool off and checked the spark plugs every one was wet from coolant... I cleaned them up and we gapped them and put them right back in the truck and fought it to get it started for about 2 hours immediately noticed it now knocks!! My best guess the block froze because of the leaking water pump and it constantly overheating didn't just blow the head gaskets but cracked the both cylinder heads and maybe even the block, it had a rebuilt transmission but it ended up getting sold for scrap

Jay, I remember seeing this Dodge on marketplace while searching for parts for my '97. Honestly, that interior is worth more than the truck itself. In fact, you landed on a honeyhole if you had to part it out. That spruce green interior is an extremely rare color for 2nd gens. They were only available for the 96 & 97 model years, and was only available on Emerald Green & Bright White. They were available in cloth & vinyl on the WS (yours), ST, and SLT trims. The only other time I saw this color interior was in 1999, on a White 1997 Club Cab SWB 4x4 SLT.

@@MXguy95 For $500 you scored big time! I'm just wondering if that truck was a special order, either by the original owner or the dealer. The majority of those WS models came with the 3.9L standard. On occasion you'd find them with the 5.2L, especially 4wd models. It's rather unique to have the 5.9L on a 1500 WS long bed 2wd model. If you're looking to restore her, spend the extra money and buy a dashboard from LMC or Mopar. LMC has the interior paint to match, and the adhesion promoter. Don't ever install one of those glue on covers. I made that mistake years ago, and nearly destroyed my dash frame. Once that cover is glued on, the heat & the cold will cause the cover to buckle. Thus causing the frame supports that house the radio, gauge cluster, HVAC, basically everything behind the bezel to crack & break away. I replaced mine with a Mopar dash back in 2019, when my heater core went out. Fortunately, I was able to fiberglass repair my dash frame. It's a pain, but well worth it. My entire dash is still holding up.

Trucks like this are a gem. It's so relieving to be able to do rough jobs in unforgiving environments without worrying that you'll scratch your $80k truck. Nice trucks have their place, too. I'd much rather pull a beautiful 45' cabin cruiser behind a $120k dually, but these trucks also have their place, for sure. lol

I like the second generations compared to the newer rams, my stepfather used to fix a lot of them, like Clifford, that had the broken dashes! We’ve actually borrowed a second generation from a dealership that he worked at and we would usually put a dash Matt on it I remembered you started out with the white one that you saved from the junkyard about four or five years ago!

@@user-dd3pl9ii2h grew up in 2nd gens, built multiple 318 and 360 LA engines and a few Magnum 360's for drag cars, and while those engines are damn tough, reliable and able to make power with a good set of heads there really isn't a comparison to the hemi in terms of power. I have a 2012 4th gen that I daily drive and I too deleted the MDS from mine but I tow with it a lot so I added heavier springs and helper bags in the rear. Tows a 8000lb trailer with 600-800lbs of stuff in the bed no problem and barely squats. However mine wiped a cam lobe at 157k miles so I replaced the cam with an off the shelf Comp cam and hellcat lifters a few years back and had it tuned. Now it's really a monster! They come factory with a tiny little baby cam in them, but once you add a bigger bump stick and get rid of the factory tune they really wake up! After doing this to my truck and making over 450hp with barely any mods I went and picked up a 392 BGE block out of a wrecked 2019 Ram heavy duty and a forged rotating assembly for it and I'm gonna do a twin turbo build on it for my 79 Plymouth Volare Duster drag car. I've seen similar combos to what I'm building make over 1100hp on the dyno with factory heads! But I have a set of AFR 224cc black hawk heads on order and I'm gonna top em with a Holley hi ram intake so hopefully I'll be able to make a bit more power. These hemi's are kinda spendy but man do they make power!

Sold my '95 Ram 1500 that I brought over from Washington State. 4WD, standard cab, short bed, 318. Only notable option? AC. Bought it years back for $1200; 117K on the odo, headliner dead, driver's side seat collapsed and biodegradable silver/grey/champagne pearl factory paint. Fixed all that, painted it (tutoned it), Magnaflow muffler (dual exit pipes & tips), looked sharp, needed nothing. Drove it out here to NC and sold it for almost $9K and 160K on the clock. Heck, the dash was in perfect shape and the people that noticed freaked out- not a cap or switched out, factory installed

Finally a 2nd Gen youtuber. Far and few between these days. Im currently replacing a timing cover gasket on my 1998 Ram 1500 4x4 "Sno- Fiter" 😂with a rebuilt transmission and Remanufacturered 5.9. Mostly rebuilt body, it is a plow truck with a sno fiter decal but im sure it isnt a legit Sno fiter factory😅 everything except quad doors and bed was replaced. Needless to say we used the stupid timing cover gasket that came with the reman engine. Was like...ahh that'll be fine. 5 years later. Wasn't fine for fks sake. In search of a 6.5 Bed. If anyone knows of a clean one at good price

That’s a good rig! I’m looking for a snow blade for mine. You plan on using another gasket? Or rtv gasket maker? Anytime I get near a timing cover or plenum I tend to go heavy on the rtv as they are bad to leak. As far as a bed goes, I have a pretty decent (rust free) bed I’d part ways with. Where are you located?

Not sure if anyone has said it or not, but the tailgate cable was probably like it was because they had boards between the wheelwells and bed sides making a flat platform with a 4x8 sheet of plywood, and the tailgate would drop to the same height. That way, they could have something wider in the bed than the wells and longer than the bed length.

I had a 97 club cab SLE with a 318 the same color as yours. I owned it for 12 years and it never once left me on the side of the road. Unfortunately, some jerk ran a red light in front of me back in 2015 and I t-boned him and totaled my baby. Fortunately, I had a dash cam to prove fault. Insurance company paid me enough to buy a 98 club cab with a 360. I still have it and it also never left me on the side of the road. Those old Dodge trucks will run forever if you take care of them.
