.50 band speed test

.50 band speed test
In this video we will be testing .50 bands. #GZKgreen , #GZKblack and #Precise will be tested in this video. Today we will find the maximum speed of these bands.
I do not believe it is good practice to max out your bands as it can affect accuracy and it will shorten your band life. That said it should be fun to see how fast 9.5mm and 8mm can go.

    Nice. You have proved that no need to use thick band to achieve fantastic speed. Drawing with thinner and lighter bands makes slingshot shooting more enjoyable. I made a mistake by using thick band when I first starting out. Now I stick to 0.5 - 0.6 and I enjoyed it more and also, I have become more accurate with my shots.

    I usually use the 24-18 taper with a pit locating pouch from gzk. .50 bands are my go to these days as the draw weight is much lighter with gong chi and sniper sling. I will be testing those next. I really like both those bands. The draw is smooth, light and I get decent speed out of them. We will soon see how fast. When making these bands I don't max them out like I did in this video. I usually add a cm or 2 to the sets and it really helps the band life

In terms of band selection for hunting I believe as along as you can shoot 9.5mm and larger at 250fps and faster you are in buisness. I am looking into hunting with slingshots in my province. I called the mnr and the person who I spoke to said it is not a legal weapon to hunt with so I asked for that in writing and she couldn't produce the information. I pretty much reserve any bands over .5 mm for hunting only, I find .5 to be the sweet spot for target shooting. I have been making precise .5 bands and I wonder if I got a bad batch of latex as all of them seem to be breaking after maybe 50 or 60 shots if that many, tying OTT method, not having that issue with simpleshot black .5, it breaks near the pouch but not right at where it is tied, it is a little further up. Anyway, great video, good to know .5 is a good choice at least for target shooting and maybe light hunting, although I would probably use .7 for hunting small game.

    @@ATOMark yeah i wouldn't want to max it out like I'm doing with gzk black at the moment, hoping i can maybe run the green with less stretch and get similar draw and speed out of it. It seems from your test like it could possibly be a more efficient band, I'm looking forward to doing a few tests with it anyway, you've opened my eyes to want to try different brands and thickness, i only shoot 9.5 and didn't even think .50 band would be up to the job, how wrong i was on that one they all performed great.

  • @ATOMark

    @ATOMark

    3 жыл бұрын

    You know that is the whole reason I wanted to test these bands. I was chatting with some guys about shooting 3/8 steel with .50 and we started testing. One of the guys went as low as .45 with good results. I got a comment that I wouldn't be able to get a ball over 200fps with 9.5 steel and. 50 bands. So I shot the video. If you aren't hunting then getting up to and beyond that 250fps is a waste. I tent to cut my bands a little longer and they are still fast enough to hit what I am pointing at and it gives them better band life. I have a bunch of tests coming. 2 more at .50 then I will increase until I get to .75 which is the thickest band I own so far. Should be interesting. I did a video about reducing band thickness and increasing tapers for better accuracy. It worked great for me.

If you never shot a slingshot at safe target before you should try it the hobby and sport is amazing so is the slingshot community very helpful and will answer most question you have. So consider slingshots as a new hobby it's awesome . Stay blessed peeps from the uk PEACE

    Gzk green are fast but thats the only thing good about them in my opinion. Brother you need to make your own bands. You will save so much money and you can get set up with the gear you need really cheap. I have seen band sets sold for $6 each and elastic rolls sold for $14. 2× band sets pay for a whole roll which would give you 20+ band sets depending on your shooting style. I agree getting outside, collecting forks, target shooting, enjoying the sunshine, being in nature, being creative, challenging yourself are all good things for the mind and spirit. Personally I feel great after walking in the bush for a couple of hours shooting collecting forks and enjoying myself. Truly it is like therapy for me. I think many people could benefit from taking up the sport. Keep getting out there brother , practice and have fun. If you ever have any questions you know where to find me.

    How are you Sean. I usually just measure from the fork tips to my anchor point for my draw length. Then I test the elastic for elongation and make a decision what my active band length should be. I have a video explaining all this I will attach it below.

    Just saw an easier way to cut band or tubing length. Measure your draw length, then divide by 5.5. Add about 1" to that to have enough length to tie them down.

  • @ATOMark

    @ATOMark

    2 жыл бұрын

    This would be a great idea but what do you do if the elastic has a 700% elongation you are losing a lot of speed and power. 1.5" x 7" 10.5" of unused elastic. All band sets should have the elongation tested first then divide your draw length by that. At this point you can add attachment points and a little extra for longevity.

  • @ATOMark

    .8 is way overkill. I'm assuming you are shooting a short draw. I suggest you check out my snipersling black 5mm band review. Or even simpleshot .5 very high speeds with .5 bands with 8mm steel. You will not get great speeds with .8mm bands because it is like dry firing your slingshot. Bands lint that are good for 11mm steel or 9.5

  • @ATOMark

    I mostly shoot short draw. So basically what I do when I make bands is ...... 1. I check the maximum elongation of my bands. 2. Divide my draw length by the elongation I measured. 3. Then add some length to attach the pouch and to the forks but keeping the active band length accurate. 4. I also add .5 cm for longevity 5. This is how you can get the most out of your bands for your shooting style and draw length. I have a video going through the process it is would help to see it in action. Its called how I make bands

  • @ATOMark

    My draw length is 30" . It is hard to give an active band length because every band has a different elongation. When I make my band sets for speed tests I check the max elongation of the bands then divide that by my draw length. That will give me my active band length. Then I add some length for the pouch and fork attachment.

    I shoot 3/4 butterfly with .5 bands and 3/8 steel. I shoot 265fps and I by far dont max out. Some bands react to tapers differently. Im a strong believer in finding the taper for the band and ammo match if your looking for speed without heavy draw. If accuracy is what your after then I believe finding a good taper that fits all your bands and keeping 1 taper. I always laughed when people say you can't hunt with .5 bands and 3/8 steel. My set up is a prairie dogs worst nightmare. Shooting in Colorado may be helping my speed, but not by much.

    I maxed these out just to see what speeds I could get out of them. I agree 100% you do have to experiment with tapers and bands. Once you get it dialed in, stick with it. As for hunting as ling as you are reaching that 250fps in my opinion you are good to go.
