As a RN of 25+ years, you give some spot on advice. I hope current or future nursing students are listening!

Can I add about the being positive while in the clinical setting. I am a 30+ year RN and I see nursing students on a daily basis. We ( RN employees) are watching you students and when it comes hiring time our input is taken by the nurse managers in which of you to hire. We remember the positive ( great outlook) students and we also remember the complainers...which ones do you think we recommend to be hired?

Some good pointers Nurse Bass. I would like to add that while this wouldn't make the top 5, but it is definitely worth mentioning....STAY AWAY FROM THE BUTT-KISSERS AND OUT OF THE GOSSIP GROUPS! Everywhere there are workers who love nothing else than to suck-up to the boss and snitch on their peers over the most petty things imaginable. Well, the same applies in nursing school. In fact, it's quite a pandemic. Now, I certainly do not advocate that information be withheld if someone is doing something that is unsafe or illegal; I'm talking about people in your very own classroom/clinical setting who think they can get an edge over others by tattling to the instructors over trivial things. In reality, these people are mistaken! Instructors often find these students contemptible and untrustworthy. Why? Because what makes them think that the snitch isn't going to say something about them? It's certainly no joke. No one likes a person like that. They create chaos, misstrust and it demoralizes the cohort. The same goes for when some students start to form snotty little cliques, and you can't help but overhear them trash talking other students, or even their instructors! Seriously, people behaving childish like this will bring you down if you get caught up in it. Know who they are and avoid them. Because; frankly, you don't have the time for it, especially in nursing school!

Well stated! Some people never grow up! So right about carefully choosing who you associate with in nursing school. The main focus is to learn, give it your all, & move forward. No time for drama, petty gossip, & back stabbing.

I really like the last one. School gets so freak'n tough and sometimes it's hard to stay optimistic, but you're right, we worked hard to get in and it is a blessing. One day these struggles will pay off!

Also, I hate it when students argue with professors. We are in our 3rd week of nursing school and I see students doing that already. But from what I've noticed in my program, it's usually that older students (like 45 and up) that argue with professors the most.

@marteemar7 You definitely just hit the nail on the head. It's all about the patient. "Respect the profession." That's very true. It's a shame that there are some people who truly do take this entire experience for granted. I just pray for the patients they may one day be caring for.

all of your tips are so on point. nursing school is a blessing and a wonderful opprtunity. I loved that you indicated never thinking a skill is below you. absolute truth and I've seen classmates who've portrayed such ugly unprofessionalisn when asked to do something. we don't pick and choose what we feel like doing. it's all about patient centeredness. take every opportunity offered to enhance your sill, that only makes you a better nurse. respect your profession. you've done everything you could to get in the program why would you jack that up over silliness? it's all about humbleness...thanks Nurse Bass for you wisdom.

Yessss my dude!! I just found your channel and I'm already loving it, subscribed immediately. You hit it right with everything. I'm a student now, I finish my first semester in two weeks and start working as a student nurse tech shortly after. Your videos are super motivating. And you ain't lying either, we are GUESTS in those hospitals/care centers/etc and we have to take it as a privilege to do those "small" tasks. I learned right off the bat that the techs and everything they do are godsent.

I needed to hear this. Had the worst day at clinicals! You are so right, I am blessed to have been given this opportunity

Omy Clinicals is tomorrow and thanks to this video I am stressed free. even though I am not ready it's because my school for CNA is 1 a week Saturday. and I see 21 skills on youtube but people don't have the equipment to see and try it. just making the bed the first yime was extremely challenging. I think if people are going to take CNA classes or school make sure its at least 3 or more times a week.

Thank you for reminding me how lucky I am to be in this program, I needed this motivation boost with finals just around the corner!

Watched "5 things" just now and I totally agree. I have been an acute care RN for 40++ years and have felt like it was an honor and blessing. I'm so happy to see new professionals that really understand. So, carry on and do great things to change lives. 🙏

So true! Blessed to be there; be respectful and be there to serve! I’ve been taking it too seriously; overstudied, and blew my last test. I’m taking an accelerated program, done in 16 months, and it’s brutal! We take NCLEX style questions and they are killing me. Sooo I love clinicals and talking to people, any way I can make their day better, I will do. It just helps keep the edge off because I seem to have developed test anxiety and I know I’m meant for this, just gonna cry and push on through. It’s all gonna be worth it and book knowledge and floor knowledge are two different worlds. No one coding is gonna give a shit I didn’t get an A, they just want me to save their life, and that is the goal. Good day future nurses! Let’s rock this out with a grateful heart. 😁

I was checking out for one of my skills in my Foundation Lab class, and my instructor tried to tell me that I didn't check for 2 sets of initials on the MAR for the medication was going to give. That was the first thing I did, but she didn't see me do that! I was really annoyed, but I was sitting there thinking to myself, is this half of a point really going to make or break my grade... no lol. That was the first thing I thought of when you said don't argue with my instructor! You give some real good advice, and I just subscribed to your channel! I'll definitely come here for advice in the future! :)

If a student feels there is a problem with a test or a question, be professional about it. Request to speak to the nursing professor in their office one on one. Be respectful. Address the issue. Research & present the situation with all of the details. Discuss the solution. Whether the nursing professor accepts your insight or not, at least you made an attempt to set things right. And, you conducted yourself appropriately....as a professional!

Really appreciate you saying No. 5 as many of us do take that for granted and since you brought it up, i will definitely look at this differently. Thank you.

I am in my first semester of nursing school. I have been feeling overwhelmed and slightly discouraged. I felt like I found this video today for a reason. It was just the pick me up that I needed. Thank you!

dude, I'm a nursing student as a sophomore doing med surg right now and you are so right on! I have SO many immature students who literally ask a professor why can't you make this test easy or something, or exactly what you said, the know it all cocky pretentious student who is intellectually smart but when it comes to clinical they have no clue what to do. I mean in my class they think nursing school is just another step to a job but it's a career and a field that actually makes you a better person. Yeah you'll have assholes CNAs, maybe nurses but they are a part of a team too and we as nurses can't look down on anyone or anything. clinicals is an experience that nursing students do take for granted but guess what you'll never have the opportunity like this again. Long story short, I am proud to be a nursing student and everything you said is spot on

I wish I watched this before I started nursing school. I graduated back in 2014 but sometimes I look back on when I went to clinicals and I cringe thinking about how sometimes I would lose focus an joke around with my classmates. Sometimes you know I would take going to school for granted by slacking off sometimes when I knew I needed to study. Part of that was being young and maybe a little immature but if I could do it all over again I would soak up every bit of information I could. But I worked hard in nursing school, and it does not come easy. All of those all nighters pay off in the end.

New to you're channel enjoying the content. Definitely refreshing and humbling advice. Being a nursing student you definitely have your up and down that come with. Overall your right be thankful for the moment and experience! :)

Thank you for the video it is very useful, but I have a concern about the first advice, it is not always a high school stuff, sometimes when I argue with my lecturers about question on the exam and so, they think about my point view and they make changes and I got a couple marks for that . of course with all the respect and low voice.

SHOUTOUT! Woo hoo! #FamousBecauseNurseBassMentionedMeInHisKillerVid! I agree with these all 100%...although I do have to confess that I have been that person to object to test questions. I think it can be done in a respectful manner, but unfortunately it oftentimes turns into "students vs. teacher" and everyone goes into attack mode, which just creates an--as you said--awkward situation for everyone. My strategy is typically to ask for the professor to point out the content area in our notes or textbook so that I am able to review that area since I wasn't "satisfied with my test results on the topic". Sometimes the professor is unable to locate the material or finds that the notes/textbook was vaguely worded, which is why some questions end up being thrown out in the end. But it's a delicate situation and, as you said, needs to be handled professionally and with the utmost RESPECT! I like that you threw #5 in here because it's my go-to motivator! Sure, I can look at what just me, myself, and I have done to "earn my spot" in nursing school, but stepping back and becoming aware of all of the tiny little elements of this nursing school journey that had to be orchestrated perfectly for this opportunity to knock on my door in the first place? It's all way too awesome to be my work alone! I was GIVEN and am given this opportunity every day to pursue my dreams and become the best nurse I can and I refuse to give anything but my best because of it! Being in nursing school is, despite those times when you just want to do NOTHING because your brain and heart are fried, most definitely a privilege and we should never forget it! Great video!

I just want to know why I got it wrong so I don't make that same mistake on a future exam lol. And I think your second paragraph is beautiful. That's exactly how I feel and how I approach school. You hit the nail on the head. Especially in my case, there was seriously an extremely slim chance of me even getting my paperwork together to get it turned in on time much less getting accepted into the program. And I could literally see everything unfolding perfectly before my eyes (all of it out of my hands by the way). God most definitely orchestrated it all. And all I had to do was just show up.

look normally i agree that we should be professional and not argue with the professors about test questions or material but when it's consistently happening and the whole class is failing then i think it's an issue.

How do you feel about tattoos and piercing on nurses? I have tattoos in my inner wrist that I have to cover up for clinicals.

But I can understand the need for covering them up in a professional environment, especially while we're still students and are a reflection of the School in which we attend. :)

I’ve see the arguing in the Pre requisites like Biology.

It is such a blessing to get into nursing school. We had 450 applicants. 40 people were chosen for the 2 year RN Program. And, 16 were chosen for the 1 year, LVN to ADN Program (this is the program I belong to). When I received my RN school acceptance letter, I cried out of pure gratitude and joy....😌🌸🌹 P.S. I start RN school in spring 2020. Amen! 🙏💐

When I chose to do nursing I kept the less desirable things in mind. Nursing has GREAT things, but nothing is perfect. The job has to be done, so do it with a smile and keep those patients well and happy. Don’t make it harder or awkward. I’m very very excited to work towards being an RN.

how do u get over the nervousness of things like cleaning patients especially opposite sex. I know it sounds stupid but although I took care of my mom for about 7 years it's so much different. also my mom passed about 5 months ago and although I want to be in nursing it's so emotional to me. If u see someone doing cpr even on tv I can't help but think about my mom and wonder about her final moments. I don't want to be that student that can't get through a lesson and burst in tears.

+googooberries The nervousness goes away with repetition. The more you do it, the less you think about it and the more second nature it becomes. As far as the emotional side, I wish I could help you with some advice.

Tomorrow, I am going to see if i got accepted in to my High School's (CNA) program. 40 applied only 26 can get in. If i do get in it will be the first step for me becoming a RN. #malenurse

I've seen it before. I honestly haven't seen it too much in Nursing School, but definitely in my pre-requisite courses. Especially in the Anatomy and Physiologies. It's always great whenever you know MORE than the Know-It-All does and you can just sit there silently and laugh to yourself as they sound ridiculous lol. I'm terrible, I know. :p

Hi! I know I'm several months late on this video...My bad. Could you give me some advice? I'm a senior in high school, and I'm gonna hopefully be going to nursing school after I graduate. The problem is I'm trying to decide whether to take medical assistant classes, go get some experience, and then go for my bsn-rn, or go for LPN, go get some experience and then go for bsn-rn. Whhich pathway do you think is better for someone that's trying to get their feet wet? Are Lpn's being phased out? That's what I heard is happening here in West Virginia. I'm really trying to figure this all out and it's pretty scary for someone like me. I feel like this is my calling and this is where I was meant to be, but I feel as if I'm insignificant. I'm not good at chemistry or math and I could be better at physiology. But I absolutely love anatomy and anything related to the body. I would love if you could please give me some direction on how to manage all of these decisions. It's getting me stressed out.

+Levi Collins Sure, I'll give you my advice. My advice would be to do neither of those things to be honest (I've also heard that LPNs are being phased out, and Medical Assistant will take too long in my opinion). What I would do if I were you, is take a class to become a Certified Nurse Assistant (classes can range from 2 weeks to a few months, then you can take the State Test and get hired as a CNA). That is going to take the shortest amount of time to become certified and start work, and going to give you the best kind of experience you could possibly get to begin becoming prepared to be a Nurse. That's my two cents, but I really stand by that opinion. :)

Nurse Bass Thank you so much for the advice! I'm gonna seriously look into this new information you've given me. And forgive my latereply, but I've been quite ill for the past week, so you'll have to forgive me. How would you say that working as a CNA would give me better experience? Would you be changing FC's, doing vital signs? Things of that nature? I've actually had some nursing training already at a high school vocational center, so I already know how to do vital signs so that should be a plus for me.

I literally just watched this video! Lol. I have another question. What do you think would be my next best step after becoming a CNA and getting a job? Where do I go and what do I become after that? Sorry for all the questions ._.

+Levi Collins After you get a job as a CNA? I guess whatever you want to do lol. If you're happy as a CNA, then stay there. If you want to be a Nurse, then go to Nursing School. There really is no additional step necessary between CNA and RN :)

Great tips, especially tip number 4 ~ never think that you are above doing any aspect of care for your patients ~ Nurses are as much responsible for bedpans as their assistants are.

Great video, now what if you feel very uncomfortable with a certain skill and performing it in a safe manner and a nurse asks if you'd like to perform it? Do you take that risk?

Yea that's actually a really great point that I probably should have mentioned. No, you definitely don't do it if you don't feel comfortable with the skill. Patient safety is priority. Thanks for bringing this up. :-)

+Matt learn one, do one, teach one . . . this is the best method for learning. Like Nursebass says jump on every opportunity to learn especially in nursing school. If you don't feel comfortable ask the nurse if you can walk through it and have them do this one . . . then the next time jump on it!
