    Yesss! Another tip is be an advocate for your own education! I've had so many situations where other nurses put me in a situation that had no value to my learning. I had to take charge and put myself in a situation that would benefit me as a nursing students. Also look for skills you want to do! My patient might not have a foley or a piggyback to hang so I go to my nurse and ask if there's anyone needing a foley placed or an IV start. You kind of have to be "aggressive" about your learning. A couple tips for anyone about to do your OR rotation eat food! Like carb load before going in lol. Don't lock your knees. Shift your weight and stretch in place. Wear compression socks and comfy shoes. When you're not used to standing in place that long it kills your feet.

    Hey man, thank you for the tips. I have worked at a nursing home for 2 and a half years, but in dietary. But I see the patients and have a heart for them. Almost all of the time my co-workers don't see the whole picture, down the line they're working for someone that desperately needs care. You're right when you say we are guests in their home. It's cause we are! I'm considering nursing school at community college next year starting prerequisites and I appreciate all the time you've taken to let us know what we're in for.

    hey nurse bass, thanks for another great video. I'm starting my final year placement in ICU on tuesday (3 or 4 shifts a week for 12 weeks) and i'm feeling the nerves. i've been going through your videos and they're helping me get into the mind set. I especially liked your tip about putting yourself out there / not being a wallflower. I was talking to the ICU NUM today kind of just asking her what she'd like to see from me this semester and she said her biggest thing is just being open to the experience, ask lots of questions because no question is a stupid one and be proactive and engaged. always good to be reminded.

    Thanks for the Advice man!! I was in the ER for an EMT hours I had to do, and Everything you said is true. Help everyone, and that nothing is below you. This will help when I start clinical. I see it as something might seem gross, like a changing soiled linens, but then think of how embarrassing it is for the patient. So being professional, and not getting bothered by doing the work will help so much.

    Honorable mention: attire, I guess you can place that under professionalism. I had a clinical rotation at the hospital with 15 other classmates and some called our Dean saying that one of her students had a green thong, clinical was immediately canceled lol , turns out it was someone else in all white(our clinical attire)

    So I start clinicals in the fall in my senior year (doing a 4 year traditional BSN) but my school is a little different. I'm finishing all my nursing classes now - this year I took medsurg I and II, psychosocial, community, peds, maternity, and research. The only actual class I have next year is 1 nursing elective per semester (we can pick between critical care, oncology, holistic nursing, high-risk delivery, etc.) and other than that it's just 3 full days of clinicals per week. I'm super worried that I will forget a lot over the summer by the time clinicals start. Do you think I should plan on reviewing every week next year or studying this summer?

  • @NurseBass

    @NurseBass

    +Audrey U I think it would be best to plan on reviewing during the summer. Constantly keep that material fresh in your mind. That's the best way to go about it in my opinion

    Extra Tips: Look your best and behave professionally. Study study study study your pathophysiology and meds! Even before you start. The more you know the more effective you will be. Know these morbidites and how they affect each other and what to expect. Know your labs. Not just what they are e.g. normal ranges. Know what affects them. Certain medications and disease processes alter these and a abnormal lab may be normal for that patient. You will get to a point to where you can look at the labs and have a good idea of what's going on. Invest in a decent stethescope . You will need it after you graduate so save money in the long run and help yourself and your ears out. Build build build a relationship with your nurses and physician. Chances are you may work in that hospital. A kind word from a seasoned physician or nurse may get you a job. The health care community is small and if you act like an ass it will come back to bite you. Shop talk is gossip and gossip can ruin a future career. Last and maybe the most important is own yourself and your career. It's your education and your money. If you're not satisfied with your experience tell your instructor. Be polite and professional but you may be saving yourself and future students a hassle. Some people don't like students and won't let you participate. Speak up about it. In regards to owning yourself, be confident in your abilities and be a patient advocate. If you know something is wrong take action appropriately. Case in point. In my first clinical rotation I noticed that a patient was not improving. Their dysphagia had increased and they had a unilateral nystagmus. When the white coats came and did rounds I told them. They said it was normal. I said please check and they did. They didn't notice it and reiterated no they look fine. I was scared and had white coat syndrome but I spoke out. I kindly asked them to check again but slowly. Sure enough it presented itself. The consulting neurologist said red flag! This is a sign of a mild stroke in the blablablah part of the brain. By trusting my training I identified a manifestation that had been missed. A wee student nurse saved a patients life perhaps. The physicians took me in front of the staff during their daily collaboration and called me out. I was smiling ear to ear needles to say. This is not uncommon believe it or not. Trust your training and be an advocate.

    Ok while preparation is important, adaptation is important in clinicals. I wish someone would have told me this earlier on but for those entering clinicals be prepared to do the things that they don’t teach you time management adapting to patients etc. it is not book by book and also there’s no such thing as clinical is impossible to fail. You might fail and I am living proof of that. This is hard truth but it’s something I should tell people because I never got informed of this until now. I was prepared to do stuff in clinical but couldn’t adapt to patients and was going book by book on the skills. You can’t do that! So that is my warning to everyone. Nurse bass and the other channels should have mentioned that. Sorry to be a downer
