My first day of nursing school, my fundamental instructor yelled at us. Said she did not expect any more than 2 students to get an A in her class, if they were “lucky.” She said most people will get either C’s, some B’s, but very little has ever earned A’s. Everything you mentioned in this video resonates with me and a lot of my classmates. I get it that nursing school is hard. What I don’t get is why some nursing professors feel they need to belittle students and make them feel like they will never learn anything. Good content by the way!

Nursing school to me is very difficult. As we learned in psych nursing, during a crisis we can either break down or come out new from it. I’m thankful for this opportunity. What’s helped me the most is accepting the fact that my grades will not resemble that of nursing pre-requisites which for some reason disturbed me the most. I am still receiving good grades but they no longer bother me. As long as I am passing and maintaining my social life , hobbies , and passing grades; I am satisfied. I would actually say I am close to stress free this semester with this new mentality.

Congratulations on finally achieving a bit of balance! So incredibly difficult while in school. Yes, that very first semester was a shock to my system as my new grades definitely were not the upper 90s I was used to in pre-reqs, but alas, here I am 4 years into the profession and I can’t really say I’m sweating not having made a 95 in Med Surg :P

I am in my third semester of nursing school. We started off with a 100 students. We now only have 32 remaining. Our school basically requires that you be a straight a student just to get into the program. Dare I say, the students aren't the problem. We have no say in our schedule, and the teacher's don't teach. They care more about their NCLEX pass rate than they do about our learning. All they want to do is be able to say that a 100% of our graduates passed the boards on the first try even if the whole graduating class has been reduced to 4 people. This is not ok.

  • @dontgetsalt2045

It should not be this hard. Especially when we forget 90% of the stuff we learned . How they stress these theories psychological ect instead of skills. It’s all about accreditation all they care about is the nclex pass rate. Why are they stressing nursing care plans when no one uses them or dosage calculation. The fact that you’re out of school if you fail just 2 classes. It’s trash. I’m in my 2nd quarter out of 8. I hate school.

I don’t think the content is hard. It’s the workload itself that they put on us which makes it hard. We are being pulled in all directions; assignments, projects, care plans, labs, practicum, lecture, quizzes, exams, hesi’s, finals like jeez. Let’s not forget the proctored points and no rounding etc that has to be made. It’s just very draining mentally, physically, and emotionally.

I’m currently in Nursing school, my school’s passing rate is an 80 which is the highest required grade out of the nursing programs where I live. I understand why it’s hard however you lose your sanity when throughout the semester you feel like your drowning. I do love this profession and this field of study and will do all I can to make sure i finish.

What is hard? Define it. For me what was hard was the constant psychological detering that makes it seem as impossible to complete the program. Professors (some) pride themselves being bullies to students infringing fear and purposely sabotaging the student's emotional courage. Completing courses and requirements is hard but that isn't the whole problem, in my view.

  • @NurseBass

    @NurseBass

Yeah, everyone will have their own subjective definition for sure. I would say navigating through an inadequate nursing education while wading through the thousands of textbook pages to find the clarity you're supposed to be provided from instructors. The cumbersome amount of fluff work thrown at students in the name of proving proficiency when all it does is promote memorization and brain-dumping isn't helping. I mean, that's the foundation of everything. For example, I have always been so adamant and harped on the importance of taking Anatomy and Physiology seriously. It's the foundation of all of our nursing education. It can't be overstressed. & by the same token, our nursing education itself is the very foundation of all of our professional careers. & how inadequately prepared might we be in an environment such as one I described above. And that's the reality for so many students and it kills me. I don't think I properly defined what I meant by "HARD" in this video lol. I'll just leave this here :P

Great video. Just found your channel as I'm looking at applying to an ADN program. I've been a respiratory therapist for several years, and our program was stupid like that, as well. Look right, look left, one of you won't be here at the end, blah blah blah. They were truthful, though. 33 started, 8 graduated, with one of the 8 a drop-back from the year ahead of us. I'm really hoping nursing school won't be as bad.

The way my program is set up is nearly 90% time-wasting. I would love if it was hard in a way that it built better nurses, but instead my program is hard in a way that it builds better essay writers. I'm very fortunate in that I can write fairly well but I feel like it's cut off some potentially amazing nurses. Also, I don't know about other programs but many of my clinical placements have been such a waste of time, it's so frustrating! For example, I'm in fourth year and my placement before pregrad is at a LTC home where I am not allowed to take part in any patient care. Rather, I'm supposed to be spending 12 hours a week for 12 weeks creating posters and presentations on IPAC for the home. I feel like the clinical skills I've gained from my handful of decent placements are slipping away and I'd love to refresh and review but with the 20,000 other projects I'm working on every week I'm struggling to find the time. I see the light at the end of the tunnel though and I'm working my ass of to get there, haha!

Yeah, the importance of hands-on clinical experience, especially in the semester prior to graduation is crucial. You've touched on a lot of my pet peeves. So much work, so little time haha I dig it! Hit these 12 weeks hard all the same! So much of our education is acquired on the job :)

Absolutely love this video because I just graduated nursing school in 2023 and in August got my LPN license. And I told agree they need to make nursing school less hard of how to get in and have more critical thinking with students real testing the ability. Especially with my program there was many teachers being verbally and emotionally abusive to certain students and same with some of my classmates in my program. Nursing schools need to pay more attention to their students mental health and well-being and to be honest I don’t know for sure but I have had PTSD from my whole life and I swear to God nursing school gave me more PTSD because if I go near that school I get incredibly anxious or just thinking about going back to nursing school scares the living shit out of me that I almost get a panic attack.

Nursing school is definitely difficult but a part of me enjoys the challenge. Part of me, of course, finds it incredibly stressful at times. I received my first B in a test, and that was, and still is, a kind of a novel experience that propels me forward. A better question would be, "Why is NRSNG so damned expensive!?". I get the plugging your sponsors, but $40/month or $80/month for six months, is quite the steep price for nursing students.

  • @NurseBass

@@NurseBass That is kind offer, I appreciate it truly. I have already subscribed and was actually watching one of the videos on Diabetes when I saw your response. I actually became a part of the service after watching your video a couple months back about nursing being hard. I was not using it too much initially but I have been increasing its use as the semester's end draws near. I do really enjoy the quizzes after each video and the practice questions they offer. So in closing, I do not argue the utility of the service or its need for payment; it is the steep price that gets me. I have recently discontinued the $40/month and will opt for the $82 for 6 months as I am sure the service will only become more important as the semesters progress.

Nursing school is hard because being a nurse is hard. This job is not for the faint of heart. Depending on the unity you are on you make quick decisions that could determine the outcome of someone’s life. Orders from doctors have to be second guessed by a nurse and not blindly followed. You are a leader and your license is on the line daily. The job is not easy so the schooling is not easy. Nursing school is to weed out plain and simple.

I understand your point BUT like he’s saying it’s the jumping through HOOPS, having you feel like the bottom is going to fall out at any moment. I think encouraging students and not constantly riding them is a better approach. I’m an RN. I went through LPN first and they are both the same…constant fear that if u don’t do everything exactly right you are DONE and u have wasted your time and money. You are right in saying it’s not for the faint of heart but I think they could let up a little and still produce good nurses. 💕

Yeah, the studies are definitely reflective of the profession, no doubt! I think a lot of programs need more thorough standards for their educators. During my time in school, I had a few select professors in the nursing program who knew their shit and were bout it bout it. & man those fruitful discussions that made the content STICK was so helpful. But it’s sad to say that the passion and quality of education really took a massive decline when I went from my pre-req Anatomy and Physiology courses to my nursing school courses.
