Strangely engineering wise, the transmission is one of the best things. Mazda did a complete clean sheet of the transmission. The goal was to tick 6 boxes - good fuel economy at high and low speeds, easy launch feel, easy hill start, direct feel, smooth but quick shifting. No transmission on market could do everything The key choice was avoid CVT (economy without direct feel), or DSG (easy startup on hill or on launch). But tradition torque converter is also lacking a bit of direct feel due to fluid (oil) bring primary driver of movement. Mazda resolved this by placing a direct lock up clutch further into transmission that removes the non-direct feel of a torque converter. It was a genius move. It means that every box is ticked and no other affordable transmission is a clever in this regard. But being economic also means that it doesn’t necessarily need the extra gears. The care cut nut (a mechanic who reviews) applauds the transmission say it’s among the best on market. Savagegeese goes as far as saying - Mazda proves that more than 6 gears isn’t really necessary, and that the transmission is the best auto on vehicle he’s driven under $50k

I’ve driven 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-speed automatics (and CVTs) over the years and the Mazda Skyactiv 6-speed auto was one of the best transmissions I remember. Ratios were well chosen and torque converter lock-up was very precisely regulated making for a very nice driving experience.

    1) Other manufacturers are using more complicated transmissions and it's blowing up in their faces - reliability issues, excessive shifting, etc. This is a concept non-car people seem to fail to understand. Drive a ZF nine-speed and let me know how that works out for you - they are constantly shifting, and are known to fail. CVTs are no better, and DCTs have NO PLACE in a commuter vehicle. I would rather drive something durable and long-lasting, and Mazda's got it right. I bought the CX-5 BECAUSE of this proven, reliable, SERVICEABLE transaxle. 2) The keyfob sucks - however, as I store the keys in my pocket, I have less "false button presses" with this design than I ever did with my Hyundai. 3) I have the Preferred trim level, and do not have heated rear seats - but you raise a valid point! 4) Plastic buttons work and last for the long-haul. A LOT of manufacturers are using "soft touch" plastic buttons - these buttons "look" and "feel" nice until about year# 4 - after the fourth year, the material begins to become gummy and wears off. Plastic buttons work, and won't degrade like fancy buttons. 5) The infotainment system is BRILLIANT! I thought I'd hate it, but I actually started to really like it after a couple weeks of ownership and prefer it over touchscreens. 6) I prefer normally aspirated engines myself, but I know many people who would opt for the extra power in a lower-spec model.

Greetings from Canada. I agree with most of your comments. I have a 2017 CX-5 GS. I paid for the Apple Car Play upgrade when it became available, but this was not 100% bug free. I can be driving along listing to a book on Audible and the Infotainment System mysteriously reboots for no apparent reason. Additionally, when I first start driving a book will play for about two minutes, then mysteriously stop and resume for no apparent reason. I have Mazda Factory Navigation and was told it interferes with the Lane-Keep-Assist feature as sometimes it cannot recognize lane markings for no apparent reason. Mostly, I am satisfied with the vehicle, but I was disappointed that I could not get a turbo version in my model year.

That was one of the lamest "things I hate about this car" I've ever seen. Here's the summary: You would rather they use the less reliable 8 or 10 speed transmissions, instead of the very reliable 6 speed transmission (that still gets 34mpg on the highway for me). You would rather them add an additional $12K to the price tag so that they could use less plastic You would rather the FOB buttons be a little bit larger, and the FOB be made of titanium so they could charge $1200 for the FOB You would rather the remote start be on the FOB instead of on the Mazda app on your phone You would rather them make the infotainment screen touch enabled so they could join other manufacturers in the class action lawsuits regarding safety around touchscreens You would rather not have to turn a dial to tune into a radio station the first time, where you then add it to your favorites and can access it immediately from that point on. 🙄

Hello Ben, can you explain to me why a 6speed automatic is seen as less than a 8 speed or a ten speed. Research shows that 8 speed to 10 speeds is overkill for inner city driving. 8 speed and ten speeds tend to not know what gear it should be in at lower speeds. You speak like having a 6 speed transmission is out of style like it's a fashion thing. Are you reviewing a vehicle or are you reviewing clothing? There is also a remote start built into the vehicle using a smart phone app. So it does have a remote starter, contrary to what you said. I do agree the Key FOB is a bit odd. Generally your review is pretty good. But not exactly accurate. Most of what you picked on are trivial and have no to little impact on a consumer's buy or not buy decision.

Just a note, on any "multi speed" transmisisons, like the ZF 8, 9, 10, etc...Those are not sequential transmissions. They will not operate linearly. Many people don't realize that this is the case. It will not flow from 1st thru 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc...It will "hop" and go from 1st, to say, 2 or 3rd, then 5th, then maybe 7th, etc...They are not actually performers, they are fuel economy solutions...And the CX-5 with SkyActiv just doesn't need to do it...Just saying. The transmission in the CX-5 is as, or more energy efficient than all other NON CVT transmissions, and nearly as efficient as the best CVTs.

All cars have some kinds of plastic buttons, even Mercedes and Ferraris do I don't see a problem with that and Ferraris become sticky in time, Mazda's hold up as well as their beautiful inside trim. Their six speed automatic is plenty enough and hyper reliable unlike some other brands transmissions.

Thanks for the review. I would rather take the tried and true Mazda 6 speed than a potentially crappy CVT or 8 or 9 speeds that are heavier and have more points of failure. You really don't need anything more than a 6 speed. It's for trying to scrape more mpgs and now you are stuck with a constantly shifting 8-10 speed. I hate the way CVTs shift anyway and are a nightmare if they fail cost wise. Mazda has thought this through and are well aware of what they are doing. It's break proof smooth and reliable. Reliability trumps complexity every time. My 2015 gets almost 26-27 mpg city and over 30 hwy. Fob is not an issue for me. I'll pass on heated seats anyway. Remaining issues are not a deal breaker and i'm ok with them.

I have the 2021 Grand Touring Reserve. The only thing that I would agree about here is the key fob. I don't care for it either. I prefer the buttons to be larger. The other items mentioned - ehh. I think some of the items not liked are actually positives. Like the tranny being 6 speed. I've driven the 8 plus speeds and to me - those trannies just drive me bonkers with the gear switching. Give me the 6 speed with its reliability any day. Also the radio control - big plus. I don't like a touch screen - you have to reach over (eyes off the road) - it gets all smudgy - etc. Much safer with the knob once you get used to it. Never used the rear seat heaters but I suppose that could be an issue - but I mean this is really stretching now looking for negatives ...

  • @BrandonG8Man

The ZF 8-speed is rear wheel drive only. The front wheel drive based BMW’s use an Aisin Unit. The shiny black plastic is horrible but it doesn’t equate to being cheap given the fact that it’s the darling of luxury providers such as Audi. The turbo is no longer available on the lower priced Carbon Edition due to the chip shortage. The chips for the turbo’s ECU are limited so it only makes sense to maximize profits for those you can produce.

  • @serginho445
    @serginho4452 жыл бұрын

for the 3rd issue, definitely you didn't use the car too much. First of all, you set the favorite radio station once, that's why is called favorite and you don't have to do it while driving. And for the searching while driving , you can use the controls on the wheel, just keep pressed the "next" button and it will automatically stop when the next radio station is found. I get it that we are in 2022 and a touch screen is common sense, but the scenarios you complained about are fine without touch screen. There are some scenarios when you might want the touchscreen tough.. :))

ZF 8 speed automatic wouldn’t work in this car because it’s a front wheel drive platform, those only work on rear wheel drive platforms. The ZF 9 speeds are for front wheel drive biased vehicles and that transmission is a disaster. I don’t understand why people complain about Mazda’s super reliable and smooth 6 speed when the majority of its direct competitors are using CVTs or the janky zf 9 speed.🙄 I think the only exception is the RAV4 and Tiguan.

I've never thought about the heated seats in the back since I've never had three people back there, but that should probably be put on the doors. As for the materials. The only thing that bothers me is the piano black plastic. Particularly near the shifter as that's a high traffic area so it gets dirty quick and is hard to clean without scratching the shit out of that plastic. The touch screen safety thing is real. A study was done and messing with a touch screen while driving is equivalent to driving under the influence. Overall very happy with it and don't regret buying it. Even though it's a crossover it's just very fun to drive. The engine is pretty peppy and it corners like a car. Some of my favorite things are the heads up display (You would think it's a gimmick, but now I hate driving vehicles without it). Radar cruiser control is super convenient, the automatic high beams and wipers all work pretty well. I only have about 14k km on it, but I haven't had any issues. Oh and I'm from Canada.

My wife and I just made a 1100 mile trip 2 weeks into purchasing a 2022 CX5 premium. Overall impressions are good...we still kept our 2013 Honda CRV with the 5spd AT. Our BSM sensor was "blocked" twice while traveling on the highway. The Owner's manual is rubbish in my opinion...trying to find why this happened. In a few minutes later, the message went away. I rented a Nissan Altima several years ago, travelling the same highway with the BSM system and never had this happen..an omen of bad things to come with this car. I've owned several Mazdas in the past and have always been happy with them...very dependable. Appreciate your honest review...yes, the rear center console is an interesting conundrum..rear seat is rarely used for us. One other observations....US Mazdas have black cladding around the wheel openings where other places, e.g. in Canada, they're painted. Saw this in the brochure..just strange.

I traded in my 2019 for a 2022. Check out the intermittent windshield wiper set up. They work via camera--they aren't on some set timer. And I have to say, the camera on mine isn't too good. It doesn't matter if you put them on slow, medium or fast--the wipers will do what the camera tells it to do. And on mine, if it's not really raining, but retained water is blowing from the hood, the camera doesn't recognize it....so I have to put the wipers on auto to get them to work. Once during a light, but steady drizzle, I drove several blocks just to see how long it would be before the wipers would work....it took several minutes to get one little wipe. I took it in for service--but their tests of it (spraying water on the windshield) said: all ok. It's not. It drives me crazy. I like the car--I agree with the complicated entertainment system comment too. Much preferred my 2019 entertainment system.

In the past several years I have purchased new a Totota RAV4, A new Honda CR-V and currently drive a purchased new Mazda CX-5. Traded the RAV4 in on the CR-V. Had no especial complaints with the RAV4. Traded the CR-V in on the CX-5 for a very specific reason, that of Honda's "oil depletion problem" with the smaller engine coupled with a turbo. This problem was a sword of Damocles for me, driving short distances in cold conditions. That said, I doubt I will buy another CX-5 and may well go back to a CR-V in another year. I liked the CR-V and loved the fact it came with a remote start in the trim level I had. Not sure how Honda is doing with that oil depletion fiasco. I'd have to check to see if that is still a concern. All in all, I'd prefer a larger engine with no turbo than be concerned with turbo reliability issues. Call me old school but turbos used to be problems waiting to happen. But I did prefer the CR-V over the CX-5 for several reasons. 1/ Larger cargo area. 2/ Preferred the control layout. I find the controls on the Mazda to be hard to operate while driving. Selecting the window defroster while in motion is a "stab in the dark" thing and impossible with gloves on. 3/ The CX-5 key fob is a problem. On 3 occasions I have found my hatchback open because I've accidently triggered it from the fob in my pocket. Never had that happen with any other car. Now I'm paranoid about it! LOL! 4/ The CR-V has standard remote start and it works from the fob. I don't "hate" my CX-5. But overall, I preferred the CR-V. Have to see what the RAV4 is offering these days.

I totally agree with you on the point about being able to get the turbo with cloth seats and the lack of touch screen...I don't like the leather but had to get it to get the turbo and trying to change radio stations or input an address in the navigation system is a total nightmare. One last thing, the reason why the Miata still has a touch screen is because it is running an older version of the infotainment system.

I would like Mazda to not only make a remote start battery key but to have it be a remote shut off as well. I have a 2017 Mazda CX-5 in awesome condition, but I also have my 1996 Mazda Protege still and it got stolen from Motel 6 while I was packing up to leave. I heard my car screech off and saw it go bye-bye. So it would be nice for Mazda to either make their cars unable to drive off unless you are in the car with the entry remote key, or make the entry remote key shut the car off if someone gets in your car and tries to drive away. This is 2022. I don't think it would be hard to do. Other than that, I like Mazda's. By Shiloh Ray

I have a 2022 Mazda CX-5 with the Premium Plus package. I came out of a 2010 Nissan Altima SL. One thing I hate about my Mazda is that I can’t get out and lock the doors while the car is running, even when the fob is with me outside of the car. The doors simply won’t lock. I was able to do it with my Nissan and found it convenient when stopping by the mailboxes to grab my mail. The Mazda does have remote start through the app, it was one of the reasons I decided to purchase this car. My hope was that I could have the car running with the AC going so when I got inside, the car would be cool. I live in Vegas and getting in your car in the summer is miserable. What sucks is the AC only starts to cool when the car is actually moving. My Nissan didn’t have remote start so I would have to turn the car on, then the AC , and leave it running with the doors locked while I went back inside. The AC would cool without the car actually moving. Those are my two biggest gripes.

I haven’t listened in over 20 years so using the tuner is no problem and I don’t even know, or want to know, where it is. Might be just me. (3) Not having a touch screen sucks. But I have about 1800 albums on Apple Music and use Car Play. I select albums, shuffle play and I’m good to go😃 (4). Turbo?! It’s an SUV. If I want to go fast, I’ll buy a muscle car. I absolutely don’t see the need for fast SUVs, IMO. In fact, the reason why I didn’t purchase one of the the higher trims is because they have the turbo. (5) The 6 speed auto is tried and true. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it……….Excellent vid 👍🏻 The Boomer has spoken😂😂😂😂😂.

I HATE how i use manual tuning on the radio (cause so easy to spin the dial to switch around the channels) and it won't keep the setting, if i switch to something else, i have to crawl back into the menu to setup manual tuning feature - it doesn't save settings (like disabling collision avoidance or manual setup). I also hate when i am making a left turn in a left turn double lane with my blinker on, it makes all types of noises and beeps and steering jerks thinking you are going to crash when you are not. This automatic car warning systems are not great and wish i could disable all of it (and it would save my settings where i only have to do it once).
