The 2022 Mazda CX-5 Signature Is A Restyled Premium Compact SUV

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With nearly 170,000 units sold in 2021, the #MazdaCX5 is a very important model for Mazda since its accounts for over 50% of their sales. For 2022, the #CX5 gets some much needed changes to keep this model appealing. If you spring for the fully loaded #CX5Signature, you'll still get near luxury car levels of on the inside and a potent turbo engine as standard. Sadly, #Mazda still does not offer a #CX5Hybrid, but that is something that is coming on the #MazdaCX50.

I guess I'm one of those rare people that likes that Mazda is keeping this car old school. I love the old school transmission shifter, the analog gauges, and I don't need wireless car play (heats up the phone and kills the battery off). I even like the simple, non-pano sunroof. The climate controls are buttons, not on a screen. I'm glad there's one car left without screens for everything.

I agree- I like most of the “old school” tried and true bits & bobs Mazda uses, but the actual 6 speed transmission NEEDS to be replaced. Example being Mazda6 turbo had competitive hp numbers but was one of the slowest in 0-60 times in its class. A 7-8 speed trans with remapped gearing would do wonders for Mazdas performance and MPG figures.

I can agree with having more gears are better. But there are reliability and other aspects to consider than just numbers of gears. I never driven the CX5 but my Mazda 6 (16) and the mx5 (13) both auto boxes will down shift very nicely when going downhill (steep) and will hold that gear and speed without having me to brake a lot if at all. Our bmw 430i does that too but not as well, have to brake a bit more. The Camry SE (18) hardly do that at all, and it’s not very smooth either. I’m just saying that Mazda does have a good programming with their auto transmissions. And both of my cars have been very reliable as well.

I have a 2021 GT Reserve with the Turbo engine, so I have 95% of what you get here in this Signature model. Overall, I’m really satisfied with the car, but if you’re planning on buying or leasing one here’s a couple things you should know: A) The gas mileage with the turbo engine isn’t great. Out on the highway it’s pretty solid and you can get 400 miles on a full tank. In the city though, it’s definitely thirsty and it has a small tank so you’ll be filling up more often than you’d like. But the extra power is really nice so if that matters a lot to you then definitely go for it! Just be aware that driving with a lead foot will affect your wallet. B) The driver and passenger seat comfort is lacking. This is obviously subjective, but I’ve done some online research and there are Reddit forums on this topic, so I’m not crazy. The good part is the comfort issue only affects me on long drives, such as anything 1.5+ hours. On short, “around town” kind of drives it’s not an issue at all. Just another things to be aware of. I’ve driven my mom’s 2020 Mazda CX-9 on an 18 hour trip from NYC down to Florida and for most of the drive I was in total comfort (FYI: If you drive for too long in any seat/car you’ll eventually feel fatigued). But the seats in the CX-9 and CX-5 are definitely NOT the same. The CX-5 seats are narrower both in width and length (bigger legged and backside’d people beware) and the thigh cushions are not as soft as they should be. The CX-9 seats do not have these issues, so if seat comfort is a must have for you, now you know. But again, if you mostly take short drives, this should not affect you. Two more minor things (for me at least) are the size of the cargo area and the 6-speed auto. I do wish the CX-5’s cargo area would be bigger and more on par with its rivals like the new Hyundai Tucson, which offers something like ten more cubic feet of space. I’ve had to play Tetris with my luggage and baby carriage a couple of times, but I’ve yet to encounter a situation where I simply couldn’t fit everything I needed to in the cargo area. On the 6-speed auto, like Sofyan said, it’s definitely smooth and it gets the job done. However, for those who think that they’ll be getting a bargain Audi Q5 with the Turbo engine, you won’t. The engine is definitely strong but the tranny holds it back big time. This is an old Mazda transmission that’s been around for quite a while, way before Mazda introduced this bigger, turbo engine. It’s tuned for comfort and economy, not fast, sporty driving (despite having a dedicated “sport mode” button). A 7-speed dual-clutch rival this transmission is not. And that’s it. To sum up: This is a good looking, sporty driving, nicely equipped, mainstream yet upscale, small SUV. It has very good standard tech, and is properly quick with the upgraded engine. Just don’t take it on cross-country road trips if you and your back/butt have a good relationship and don’t expect it to be a sports car. You’ll get awful gas mileage and be disappointed that it’s not, in fact, a sports car. Peace ✌🏻

6 speeds is enough for a transmission. It's not a race car and people buying a compact SUV I don't think have that as their first priority. All these cars with 8 speeds like Toyota or 10 speeds in Ford all hunt for gears way too often. Constantly upshifting and downshifting any time you just breath on the gas pedal.

it is , the 2.5 Turbo is very in-efficient. You could argue it makes a lot of power on paper , but to the wheels it really does. The 2.0 turbo escape does the same 0-60 with WAY better fuel economy. The rdx 2.0 turbo does 0-60 in 5.7 with better reliability. You made the right decision to get the base engine. it doesnt make sense to grab the turbo modLe. The only thing viewers should keep in mind is that you are focused on latest and greatest while most consumers want a balance of that plus reliability, which mazda brings to the table with a lot of traditional tech and mechanics. I bought our first Mazda CX-5 GT new in 2016 and we are still driving it. It has been every bit as reliable and trustworthy as the Toyota’s and it’s a bit more fun to drive. Everyone in complaining about the transmission but I always found it to be the smoothest shifting tranny we have ever had and the mileage is excellent… it’s right up there with our front wheel drive Toyota’s. It was also made in Japan vs the new Lexus RX350 we bought that is made in Canada. We had pre ordered our GV almost a year in advance and paid $85,000 Canadian for it. One year later we sold it back to them with 14,000kms on the odometer for $79,000.00.

Something to note about the transmission is that while it may not have the best performance, the fact that Mazda has been building it for quite some time means that it’ll likely hold up very well in the long run with little to no issues. And as Sofyan said, it’s smooth and gets the job done. That, along with longevity, are what most people care about, and probably explains why Mazda is still putting this transmission in their models.

I consider Mazda on roughly the same level as Subaru as far as lower-tier quality Japanese automakers... Mainly just from experience with my wife's 2010 Forester which needed a transmission at around 110k and blew a head gasket at around 135-140k (we bought it new) and my 2008 Mazda CX-7 which blew a turbo JUST OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY and cost a fortune to replace, then never seemed to run the same again until I traded it in 2012 (bought it new as well)... My current '04 Acura TL in my profile pic has been "almost" flawless mechanically (although yes I've had to replace the timing belt twice), but I have had the transmission replaced twice, once under extended factory warranty right after I bought it and rebuilt 1.5 years ago at about 185k, has 203k today (bought it 8 years old in 2012 with around 60k miles). The wife has a 2017 Toyota Highlander now which has been flawless aside from needing a new gas cap which threw a check engine light, and a new battery just last week when it wouldn't start in the garage. I plan to give my TL to my oldest boy this year on his 17th birthday and buy a 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing midlife-crisis-mobile.

What nobody tells you about turbo engines is that they require more attention to maintain them. You are supposed to change the oil more frequently than non-turbos and if you love to run the AC full blast on hot days like me you should let the car run a idle bit with AC off before you turn it off.
