This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new 2022 Mazda CX-5 compact SUV. What’s new for 2022? The CX-5 now comes with standard AWD and the turbo engine gets a bump in power going from 250 to 256 horsepower on premium fuel. There are updates to the drive, suspension and the 6-speed automatic transmission is now more responsive. The seats have been redesigned, the cabin is quieter, the steering precise and the ride quality feels more like something you would expect from a German brand. The 2022 mazda CX-5 exterior refresh includes, a bolder, textured grille with wings that extend to the redesigned headlights. The rear features a new bumper and tailgate design with larger dual tailpipes. Looking for a sportier look? The new-Sport Design trim offers just that with 19” black wheels, black exterior mirrors, a black grille with red accents, black front and rear bumpers and black leather trimmed upholstery with red accents.
The top Signature CX-5 trim we are driving gets its own unique and sophisticated style, with 19” bright silver wheels, body colour front and rear bumpers and wheel arches plus a bright finish to the grille. The interior has beautiful Nappa leather, Abachi wood trim and satin chrome accents.
There are two engine choices, the base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft. There is also a turbocharged version with 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. With regular gas, 227 horsepower & 310 lb-ft of torque.
In Canada, the “best value” trim for the Mazda CX-5 goes to the GS model with the comfort package for $36,000 CAD. You get all the base model features including, a 10.25” centre display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, push button start and heated front seats but also a power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, power driver’s seat, moonroof and 19” wheels. In the US, the “best value” trim is the Carbon Edition for $30,720 USD with similar features but you also get leather upholstery.
The CX-5 starts at $30,200 CAD/$25,900 USD
GS $33,900 CAD, Kuro $37,700 CAD, GT $38,950 CAD, Sport Design $40,150 CAD, Sport Design Turbo $42,350 CAD and top Signature trim is $43,350 CAD. Select $27,900 USD, Preferred $29,600 USD, Premium $32,310 USD, Premium Plus $33,950 USD, 2.5T $36,400 USD and Signature $38,640 USD

Mazda cars are so classy, their designs will stand the test of time years from now. Can't say the same for some of the competition that tried too hard to be different.

I told my brother just the other day that Mazda has managed to bottle that timelessness look that only Lexus, Toyota 4 runners in particular and maybe BMW have captured.

My wife and I bought the first edition way back in late 2012 and we still have it 92,000 miles later. Prior to that we had the Mazda CX-7 (which sold us on the Mazda experience). Our Cx-5 is getting long in the tooth now and we're hoping to change vehicle later this year. I recently drove a 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle from our local dealership for a couple of days while ours 2013 model was getting serviced. It was the 2.5L with 186HP so 30HP and 30lbs torque better than ours. So, I got a good comparison of how the CX-5 has evolved. First thing I would say about Mazda having owned them going back to 2006 is in my experience they have great build quality and reliability. We've kept up all the maintenance services over the years and our CX-5 has never faltered once in nearly ten years of ownership. They are great daily driver for people that don't need the space of a midsize or large SUV. As Andrea pointed out the sporty handling and easy maneuverability are strong points. The steering is well weighted and it's easy to know where the wheels are pointed. If you like that overly boasted light steering feel look elsewhere. Some improvements and differences I noticed with the 2022 CX-5 courtesy vehicle over our 2013 are; The extra 30HP in the newer base engine is considerably peppier than our 155HP engine so the 2.5L with the 256HP must feel decently quick. The steering wheel leather is softer and more premium feeling, the seats are much better cushioned and more supportive, the material quality throughout the cabin and especially around the dash with the large info screen and more modern center console is a lot nicer. There's a lot less wind and road noise compared to ours and although the suspension is on the firm side with the newer models it's much smoother over bumps, road imperfections and expansion joints than our 2013 model. Although our CX-5 has the outdated touchscreen I still would rather a touchscreen or at least the choice of it and a rotary knob to use the info screen. The trunk space in the newer models is also noticeable smaller than the first generation. Overall if you enjoy driving, want a bit of sporty handling in a very reliable and upscale feeling small SUV it's hard to beat the CX-5. They may be a small company but with the CX-50, CX-70 and CX-90 on the way Mazda are continuing to put out very competitive vehicles. I just wish the new future models were coming out sooner!

I just bought a 22 CX-5. I LOVE IT! Beautiful interior. I tested a Tucson, it feels very stiff compared to this one. Since its mostly me in my car, I didn't need a huge SUV. To me it drives well, and is so sophisticated looking it just fit my style. The others seemed more cheap looking inside.

Seats are a little on the firm side on my ‘21 Touring, but you get used to it. Could use more bolstering and actual lumbar support on lower trims, but you really can’t complain when you get safety features, same 10.25” screen, push button start, radar cruise and safety sense, and leather wrapped steering wheel standard.
You really can't go wrong with Mazda thx guys for all the info ...
Just picked one up last week. They gave us an offensive amount for our old car. So much nicer than our last Cx5 Grand Touring! The Cx5 has been continually improved over the last 8 years into a upscale vehicle that destroys the competition.

If Mazda combines the red seats from the Kuro Edition, blacked-out front chrome and mirror from Sport Design trim, and body-colored wheel arch and bumpers from the Signature trim, all into one package, that would be the perfect CX-5 😎

We have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 sport. What I found out and was told when we bought it was that 2016 was the last year that came with the CD player. 2017 and current don’t have them (I had a 2021 loaner and noticed that it didn’t have one). Other than that it’s a good family car.

My current CX-5 Diesel have touchscreen. I love the touchscreen better than the rotary knob. It's much easier and convenient to select or enter the address for GPS NAV than the Knob. I also wish Mazda kept that option in their new model.
2021 US Carbon Edition offered the turbo motor and bose audio system for around $30k out the door. No longer options on the 2022 version. They only get standard AWD this year. Run and get the last few remaining 2021's if you can find one.

I absolutely disagree with you. If Mazda is the boutique hotel the RAV4 is the Holiday Inn. I have driven both vehicles extensively. The RAV4 feels very cheap. The glass is thin and cracks very easily. I cannot express how noisy it is. Mazda feels expensive , quiet and composed. For build quality the Mazda takes the trophy; it is built in Japan! The RAV4 is built in North America. Even the Lexus NX is built in North America… and I am sure the NX is noisier than the Mazda as well. Some of the most unreliable vehicles built by Toyota used the 2.4L engine in the past.

Just wanted to thank Zack and Andrea for this channel. We bought a compact SUV in early January and used Motormouth and one other great KZread reviewer to narrow down our search. Especially enjoy their different viewpoints. We got a 2021 CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo. Didnt get a '22 because in the US they dont offer the Turbo except in the highest trim lines, so we were able to get the Turbo for around $33k (US). That was important to my wife - she loved the way to the Mazda drove and the power of the Turbo, and that it was an affordable option to a X1/X3 or Q5. It seems with this review perhaps Andrea and Zack arent quite as positive on the CX5 for '22 as they were for '21? Is that because this generation is showing some age, or upgraded competition from the Tucson and the Rogue? Thank you Motormouth - really enjoy watching your reviews.

I actually like the fact that Mazda doesn't have an alternate ego luxury bramd. Mazda is Mazda.
Nice car, but the front seats kept me from buying one. The lack of thigh extenders leads to lower back strain. Others have commented about this too. Needs panoramic sunroof and a dash update too.
Wonder if the CX50 will be nicer driving? Wish they had a bit more bolster in the seats, especially the cushion. I enjoy your reviews

Thank you, glad you are enjoying the reviews. We are driving the new CX-50 next month.
Mazda is for DRIVERS- people who love to grip the wheel, feel the road and drive for hours- I always drove a 400km business trip over flying when my office thought it was crazy because I LOVE driving and THis will be my 4th Mazda!
The Napa leather in my 2022 cx5 signature is Amazing however the seats in the cx30 are larger. Love my drive

Those brown seats and painted body panels are nasty. You wasted your money.

@@generalkenobi8899 , I wanted the turbo signature but I did not like the dark interior (dark brown seats and dark headliner) so I went with the premium plus package just to get the lighter interior. I hope in three years, Mazda offers a lighter interior in the turbo and turbo signature.
I have always liked the CX-5 and see tons of them on the roads. Not every color looks on this car but all look better with roof rack. To me it appears unfinished w/o roof rack. Can't wait to see the CX-50....it better have one....lol

I liked it without the roof racks. I had that in my prior Volvo that was red also so it makes the car look like a new car to me. The Mazda looks good either way.
I would put mine on 18 inch wheels with 60 profile tire for a smoother ride.
Have always loved the look of the CX-5 but wish they would do a little more to the rear end with some chrome or trim pieces. But love how this trim one for 2022 is more color keyed it looks premium! As always Andrea you look beautiful and classy.

I wish they would extend the screen down over that empty bit of dashboard below it to show more info digitally. Could easily double the screen size.

I agree.
Are the seats any more comfortable than with prior models?
I have heard comments regarding the aggravating cylinder deactivation,is there an off switch somewhere on the dash to manually turn it off?
Love the magical chemistry (love) that Zack and Andrea have. Am a 32 year old guy, hope I find someone who cherishes me as much Andrea adores Zack.

My favs!
Too bad they don't have a hybrid. Prices of gas in Vancouver today are 1.82 per litre. RAV4 all the way for me hybrid.
Doesn't the premium fuel have to be 93 octane or better to get the HP difference? That's not just "Premium" and is hard to find.
Would love to see a comparison video of the CX-5 and the CX-50 when it comes out! Very curious to see what people have to say about the 50 Also how is it that Mazda still doesn't have a fully digital gauge? Nowadays I feel like cars still with analog gauges look a bit dated.

I have heard concerns and also believe there is a TSB bulletin on oil consumption with the turbo charged engines regarding the valve seals and there is not a fix yet

Thank you for letting us know that the turbo charged engines are having this problem.
I was looking to do my 2019 trade in for a 2022 but I see the cup holders are still behind the gear shift. It is so awkward to reach back to get your drink. You don’t use the gear shift as much as the cup holders. I guess I will hold on to my 2019;;I love my Mazda but my 2016 was better. If I had my heated seats on before turning my car off, it would come back on when restarted. My 2019 doesn’t, so it’s still cold when I go out. My visual screen was inlaid not stuck up luck a sore thumb
I just became a proud owner of the CX5 premium plus and there is no badging that states the trim level. I'm not really a fan but it is what it is.

Is the suspension really that firm?

@K it is firm but not overly firm. I'm coming from a 2020 Corolla XSE and honestly it feels pretty similar.

That's the beauty and understated confidence of Mazda. They don't need to slather their vehicles with stupid emblems.

I wish they had the badging on the car also.
Zack is wrong about the upcoming CX-50 being based on the current CX-5. The CX-50 is based on the newer 3/CX-30 platform with a torsion beam rear suspension, while the current CX-5 has an independent rear suspension and is based on the older Skyactiv platform that debuted way back in 2012 and heavily updated for 2017.
I had one as a rental. The Apple CarPlay wouldn’t work. It kept connecting and disconnecting constantly and everytime I had to go somewhere I’d have to enter a destination manually, which took forever.
great car!
Classy people shave their badges. Clean look.
How does the new Mazda CX5 compare to Lexus NX350?
Is 22 has huge difference over 21.5 cx5?
I wish the Turbo would come with the lighter Parchmen leather option. I don't like the Black or Brown, and its the only options on the turbo models.

Me too, I ended up leasing the Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus Package in the Soul Red Crystal metallic with the Parchment Leather seats. I really wanted the Turbo Signature for the power, beepers and navigation but I did not like the dark brown seats and the Turbo with the signature had black seats. Hence, I decided I just wanted a more airy feeling in interior which will make me happy. Hopefully in 3 years after my lease ends, the Turbo will allow a lighter Parchment Leather Option.
Very good video
