Mazda CX-50 VS Mazda CX-5 comparison // Compact SUV battle.

#MazdaCX-50
#MazdaCX-5
#CoupleCarComparison
This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Mazda CX-50 and the long-time favourite Mazda CX-5 compact SUVs. The Mazda CX-50 and CX-5 have two engine options; the base is a 2.5L 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The second is a turbocharged version of this with 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. You can use regular gas, but you’ll get a little less power 227 horsepower & 310 lb-ft of torque. Both come with standard AWD. The CX-50 is based on the same basic platform as the Mazda3 and CX-30, which extends to the suspension design with McPherson struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear. Mazda contends that this suspension design was used to keep vehicle motions simple and natural feeling. The CX-5 on the other hand has McPherson struts up front and an independent multi-link suspension in the rear, which allows engineers to achieve agile handling without compromising ride quality. For the CX-50, Mazda has added a panoramic sunroof and a touchscreen for wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. For all other features the screen is controlled using the centre console dial. The CX-5 has a moonroof and no touchscreen option. The CX-50 Turbo can also tow more up to 3,500 pounds, the CX-5 2,000. The CX-50 is almost 6” longer, 3” wider, offers an inch more ground clearance at 8.6” but has less height than the CX-5. The CX-50 offers an extra half-inch of front row legroom, second row legroom is very close they are almost even with the CX-50 getting 39.8” of legroom versus the CX-5 with 39.6”. Due to the CX-50’s low roofline you get less headroom in both the first and second rows. The CX-5 has almost an inch more front row headroom and over 1.5” extra 2nd row headroom. Overall cargo capacity goes to the CX-5 but space behind the second row, the winner is the CX-50. The CX-5 has a 40-20-40 rear-seat split and the CX-50 40-60. The CX-50 starts at $37,900 CAD and in the US there is a stripped down trim for $26,800 USD. The top turbo model is $45,350 CAD/$41,550 USD. The CX-5 starts at $30,200 CAD/$25,900 USD and the top turbo trim is $43,350 CAD /$38,650 USD.

‘Jinba ittai’ is the design philosophy at Mazda. It is about the balance, the ‘symmetry’, between horse and rider. I believe with the lowered roof and length, the CX-50 exemplifies those attributes… for a CUV, at least. Well done Mazda! Easy choice. Thanks for the video.

Imagine being a Mazda salesperson. You have one of the most attractive model range in the industry, with 2 of the best cars in the biggest segment. CX-5 has a more athletic character while CX-50 is more "Outback"like outdoorsy personality. CX-50's improved UI, especially you can use touchscreen at less than 10km/h and more spacious interior space will appeal to more mainstream audience. My pick is definitely CX-5 thanks to its sportier handling and better driving feel. Proven Made-in-Japan quality and reliability > a new factory even if it shares with world quality benchmark Toyota.

I had a good look at the CX-50 few weeks back at a dealership here in Dallas. And then decided to go with the CX-5 Turbo. I don't regret it. For me, handling, steering feedback is more important than anything else. I really love the heavy steering feedback on the CX-5. Also, I don't know why everyone keep telling CX-50 is 3 inches wider. As per the Technical spec, with the mirrors folded, the width of CX-5 is 72.6 inches and CX-50 is 72.9 inches. It is actually 0.3 inches wider than CX-5 not 3.

I hope the upcoming CX-70 offers a similar "off-road" trim package. Something that could complete in size, practicality and on-road off-road to say the Honda Passport/TrailSport trim. The Passport has tons of passenger space and cargo space for five and I think Mazda could benefit with having something similar and the plus side of great driving dynamics and reliability. I know Mazda are trying to go more premium with the CX-70 and CX-90 but there's also great demand for these "off-road" trims too, ex. new Pathfinder, Explorer Timberline, Passport TrailSport etc. I know they're not true off-roaders but the CX-50 Meridian edition with the more aggressive off-road tires and additional ground clearance is a nice trim option to have for folks that do go off the beaten path albeit not full-on Jeep territory!

For me if I had to buy today I probably would go with the CX-50 but I am pretty excited to see what Mazda does with with their 3.3L I6 engine. Hopefully the CX-70 isn't too big and still has some handling magic, but what I really would want them to do is to put that I6 in a sedan or even better a wagon!

They are both nice vehicles and are on my radar scope to replace the vehicle I am currently driving, if I decide to move on from that car. Interesting discussion below bordering on food fight about the width of these cars. I have looked carefully at the images of the cars and have a theory on the external width and interior dimensions. To my eye the CX-50 looks much larger than the CX-5. I believe, however, that is a styling illusion. Indisputably, however, the WB and OAL are greater on the CX-50. I am presuming for discussion purposes that Mazda used the same measuring protocol for arriving at Mazda's published figures. The more I looked at the images trying to reconcile the greater interior hip and shoulder widths of the CX-5 versus the CX-50 I came to the conclusion it's the shape of what I'll call the main body tub between the wheel wells. It appears to me that the CX-50 has more of a 'coke bottle' shape than the CX-5, the 50 has a more pronounced waist. If I am correct, that may explain the CX-5's greater interior width dimensions, particularly hip room. The differences are about an inch more or less at the shoulder and 2 inches more or less at the hip. Having sat in both cars, interestingly, visually to me, the 50 looks/feels wider. Another crafty styling trick me thinks. As to the exterior, I think we can all agree that putting aside the issue of mirrors the exterior width is measured at, obviously I think, the widest point. Generally speaking, I would guess on modern cars that's probably the front or rear wheel well lip. Mazda's published width difference for these two cars is only .3 inch, call it a quarter of an inch. That's nothing. But ... if my observation of a coke bottle waist on the CX-50 is correct that may suggest that the exterior mirror mounting points are closer to the middle of the car on the CX-50 than the CX-5. Put another way, the lack of a pronounced coke bottle waist on the CX-5 compared to the CX-50 places the 'foot' or mounting point of the 5's mirrors farther apart than on the 50. Therefore, presuming for discussion purposes the mirrors are fairly similarly sized, the 5 is going to measure wider at the mirror extended position than the 50 simply because the 5's body tub between the wheel wells is wider than the 50's body tub between the wheel wells. That would also fit with the 5 being wider inside than the 50. I've also become curious about the "H point" and "R point". While explanations are all over the web, and at least one source published a range of H point dimensions by vehicle type a couple of years ago, I haven't found H point dimensions published by vehicle make and model. The trigger exploration was contemplating the 50's lower roof line and higher ground clearance than the 5. At the end of the day it may not make much difference between the two cars. Arguably the seat mounting point on the 50 is higher than the 5 since the 50 has more ground clearance. Since I am a few inches shorther than the SAE 50th percentile crash test and measurement devices I have to raise the seats anyway!! I wonder if the Motormouth duo could prevail on Mazda to disclose the actual dimensions? take care, be safe.

Thanks for the comparo review! I would take the CX-50 for these reasons. I love that terra cotta interior, it has the better Bose sound system (12 speakers vs the CX-5's 10 speakers, plus the placement of the speakers) updated steering wheel, the cup holder placement, the center storage/arm rest is further forward, pano roof, more usable trunk space, more comfortable seats, better fuel economy, but the biggest reason is the higher ground clearance. I live just outside of Winnipeg in Stony Mountain and I lost 3 engine protectors on my Mazda 6 Signature this winter due to the amount of snow we received. That and I already have a CX-50 GT turbo metallic machine grey with terra cotta interior on order, lol! One question though, did you find that center stitch that runs down the middle of the seat cushion to be bothersome? The lads on the Straight Pipes channel found it uncomfortable like wearing a g-string. Thanks again for the review!

if you compare same trims, you will see CX50 is about +3k USD to CX5. You will get a bit better look, big sunroof and touchscreen. I don't think this is justified. If you add +4k to CX5, you can buy CX9, which is another car class. Basically CX50 price is very similar to CX9, and it's not in the favor of CX50. Still a great car, but I would prefer CX5 or CX9.

I bought the 2022 CX-5 Turbo signature and it pinches above it's price point more luxury and a lot less expensive then the Lexus or Audi Q5 . The Cx-50 is more sporty and less luxury with all the black plastic . CX-50 is competing with Subaru models IMO. I wish that the CX-5 had wireless Android and CX-5 and would be perfect for me.

I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazdas. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda for instance. At the time I was shopping for my car, they had fuel dilution problems with some of their engines. Similar to my problem but worse. They put out a bulletin and fix it. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem.

What is not discussed is whether the CX-50 has the shared air-to-water intercooler from the Mazda3 & CX-30 have versus the better air-to-air intercooler that the CX-5 (and CX-9 & Mazda6) has. The packaging in the Mazda3 & CX-30 required a more compact system. Air-to-water is less efficient and prone to heat-soak, and thereby lower performance in hot / hard work situations. Given the increased cooling that the CX-50 has which increased its towing capacity vs. the CX-5, it would be interesting to know what’s what in each.

My wife and I test drove the CX-50 and the CX-30. We are planning on driving the CX-5 in the next few weeks. Between the two that we drove, we felt the CX-30 has a higher quality interior, is much quieter, and the seats were more comfortable than the CX-50, which was loud and felt much cheaper. The extra room in the CX-50 was a positive, and if we do get the CX-30, we'd probably have to get a Thule or something. It will be interesting to see which direction we go after driving the CX-5, which I'm kind of guessing we are eventually going to get because it does have more interior volume and offers a better quality interior than the CX-50.

As always, great video. My only real concern with the CX-50 is the width. I have to see this thing in person to get a feel for it. I hear 3 inches wider than the CX-5 and that's actually quite a bit. Does the car feel big with driving or shoe-horning into a tight parking spot? I like the CX-5 a lot but prefer some of the features (like touch screen) on the CX-50. Plus the Cx-5 looks more like a jelly bean compared to the more sculpted CX-50. The lonely vent in the middle of the dash seems weird on camera. But again, I need to see this thing in person I guess.

A friend had a mid level CX5 until recently, then swapped it for a top level 3. I liked the seats and didn’t notice firmness of the suspension. Great car. Mazda in Japan doesn’t currently sell the CX9 or CX50. The CX9 is too wide so a narrow version CX8 is sold there, and I’m guessing it could be the same with the CX50. Maybe in the near future there will be a new CX5…

Also the differential and drive shaft on the Cx-50 are not as heavy duty as on the CX-5.They are for a car not an SUV.They saved money everywhere they could (underneath)on the CX-50 so it wont last as long as the CX-5.
