5 Signs and Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Discover the five key signs and symptoms of colon cancer that you should be aware of.
5 Signs and Symptoms of Colon Cancer
5. Persistent Changes in Bowel Habits
Our digestive system and bowel movements can give us important clues about our overall health.
Changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea or constipation, alterations in stool consistency or shape, and a sense of incomplete bowel movements, can be potential indicators of colon cancer.
Persistent diarrhea is characterized by frequent loose or watery stools that last for more than a few days.
On the other hand, constipation refers to infrequent bowel movements, often accompanied by straining and difficulty passing stool.
These changes in bowel habits can be a cause for concern, especially when they are consistent and unexplained by changes in diet or lifestyle.
4. Blood in the stool
The presence of blood in the stool, regardless of whether it appears as bright red blood or dark, tarry stools, is a symptom that should never be ignored.
While there are various causes of rectal bleeding, it's crucial to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional, as it can potentially be an indicator of colon cancer.
Rectal bleeding can stem from different sources within the digestive tract, including the colon.
When colon cancer develops, it can cause bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to blood appearing in the stool.
3. Abdominal Discomfort or Pain
Persistent abdominal pain, cramps, or discomfort should never be ignored, especially when accompanied by bloating or a feeling of fullness.
These symptoms can be indicative of various conditions, including colon cancer, and it's essential to have them evaluated by a healthcare professional.
Abdominal pain and discomfort can arise from multiple sources within the digestive system, including the colon.
When colon cancer develops, it can cause changes in the normal functioning of the digestive tract, leading to persistent abdominal symptoms.
2. Unexplained Weight Loss
Significant and unexplained weight loss, particularly when there have been no changes in diet or exercise, can be a potential warning sign of various health conditions, including colon cancer.
If you find yourself losing weight without a known reason, it is crucial to discuss this symptom with your doctor.
Weight loss can occur for a multitude of reasons, both benign and concerning.
1. Fatigue and Weakness
Constant fatigue and weakness that persist despite getting adequate rest can potentially be associated with colon cancer.
When cancerous cells develop in the colon or rectum, they can disrupt the normal absorption of nutrients, leading to fatigue and a general feeling of weakness.
Fatigue is a common symptom reported by individuals with various types of cancer, including colon cancer.
The presence of cancerous cells can affect the body's ability to absorb nutrients properly, causing deficiencies that contribute to fatigue and weakness.

I'm fixing to have a colonoscopy done soon to see if I have cancer and I'm a little scared. I've been praying that it's not cancer. I do have a mass on my lower left side of my stomach it's 5cm ( size of a lemon or lime). I have my family and friends praying for me. I'm praying everything goes well and there's no cancer.

I had a Colonoscopy today. After using the bowel cancer kit the result showed blood so they wanted to investigate. My brother died of bowel cancer around 18 months ago. He had declined a Colonoscopy. Today I was pretty nervous as the doctor outlined the risks and so on. The staff in the room were wonderful, even though I had left my pants on! Happily all was well. I would thoroughly recommend this procedure.

I’ve just had a operation 4 weeks ago for colon cancer and I had no symptoms at all. I originally went in to get my piles sorted and the doctor suggested I have a colonoscopy because of my age 56. This is where I had polyps removed and they found a 6 cm growth under my liver which was after tests results was cancer. I am now recovering from my operation and think I am lucky they did a full colonoscopy at the time or I wouldn’t have known to this day I had cancer.

Had all 5 symptoms occurring and progressively. Did a colonoscopy this past summer and results were not good news: Ulcerative colitis. Further CT scan was done and diagnosis was Stage 4 carcinoma rectal cancer with a 95-98% rectal mass and spread throughout my body including the liver. Pain scale was beyond 10 in my perspective. I just wanted to be in a fetal position in a dark, secluded corner and shut the world out. This video helped me a lot to understand more about this colon cancer.👍

Great informations but we’re can one get help especially at a certain age. Getting extrem pain told to go to the hospital but those pains are ignored and getting tested for stroke or heart issues which was not the reason had to go to the emergencies. Had test done not for the stomach pain and told see your family doctor. Getting the run around now for two years. Paid privately for an MRI Yes they are problems but couldn’t pinpoint were coming from. I suspect having stomach ulcer. Ask for a breath test told by do tor they are not done, ask the lab yes we do them. Needed a requisition got four of them which lab couldn’t accept because doctor had to go online to print one out but was not aware of it only after I persisted and after a run around finally will get this particular test to see if my problem is an ulcer. As a senior it is terrible to get help are those the golden years to be written off by the health care system here in Canada. Why do we have this unneeded stress. Is this respect for the elders and who is responsible and behind the agenda how not and l repeat not to give seniors the care and respect in their last years of life

Drs don't care when you get older and at 86 years old they don't really don't listen I'm 66 and I changed Drs because I wasn't getting anywhere, almost 5 years ago I had colon cancer and I was lucky I had a great surgeon and no chemo, he had done my emergency surgery in 1998 peritonitis and it wasn't my appendix but he did take them out, I came close to dieing and Dr yu saved my life Portland Oregon Providence hospital.

Many thanks! This has just reminded me that it has been about 10 years. I will definitely make an appointment to schedule my next Colonoscopy. I had 1 polyp removed apx. 10 years ago. I do believe that Jehovah God has a hand in this. I just got out of the Sunday meeting of Jehovah's Witness @ The Kingdom Hall & this popped up & I hit it. Thank you so much! May Jehovah God continue to bless & strengthen you & let his light shine upon you & give you His peace as you continue to do more research about this silent disease that's claiming many lives each passing year! Praying for you!❤😂

Symptoms I had (stage 4 ) Fatigue ,extreme Changes in bowel movements loose to hard. Colour of bowel movements getting darker and darker till almost black. Dark red purple/ black stools. Slow but steady increase in abdomen pain till gets unbearable in any position. The fatigue is due to being aneamic because of the internal bleeding. Losing weight quickly. Don't ignore any of these because it will get worse and maybe make it too late. 😞☹️😞

In the United States, colon cancer screening recommendations now state you should get your first screening at age 45. This means that in most cases if you have insurance this is covered 100% as preventive care. You should be able to get a pre-procedure estimate from the facility that you’re scheduled with. If you have a family history of colon cancer, it’s worth contacting your insurance company to ask that they cover screenings earlier. The guideline is ten years before the age a first degree relative was diagnosed with cancer, so if your parent had it at 45, start asking for screenings at 35. If you’re appealing an insurance denial, always point out how much more cost effective it will be to catch it early.

I survived Bowel cancer twice both times I saw blood in the loo and went straight to my doctor. This was in 2007 & 2011, both times I had major surgery the last operation was 12 hours. If you ever see blood do not hesitate in going to the loo, another symptom I had was I would think I had diarrhoea i would run to the loo only for it to be all gas that came out.

Could this be one of the symptoms and how do you know if the pain is on the lining of tummy or and if it’s on the colon? Thanks 🙏🏽
