You seem to be ignoring face shape. Those with long faces look better with some volume of hair on the sides. It's not just about how the hair itself looks but also about how the whole face and head looks. On the reverse, if you have a wide face, that same hair style will look extra bad on you. The one photo you have of the older woman with a long face and shortish grey hair swooped up on top IMO is not that ideal for her in particular, the hair itself looks nice but it does not go well with her longer face. It accentuates the length of her face even more and gives her a cockatoo appearance. That hair would look good on a perfectly shaped face but it's not idea for a long face.

The hair cut I want to see is the person having their hair cut actually has thin fine hair. I want see what you come up with. As to style and products you use. Because nearly every time it will be said she has fine hair, but she has quite a bit. So let's see true skill make something out of very little.

Thankyou for this video. I went through chemo and lost all of my hair. I'm also a hair stylist...no such thing as former...I needed ideas on how to grow my hair back out! It was shocking to lose my hair and wigs are a God send but now I have a better idea on how to trim it as it is has grown out a couple inches. I will keep the back short and cut the sides as you suggested, graduating up toward the top. Also, will trim the back shorter because as it grows out it is looking shaggy along the nape. I will also grow the top out a little longer than before. My hair is thick and wavy and you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Just to let you know, I kicked cancers butt!!! And now I'm looking forward to better things ahead!😊 11:43

I am 75 and I wear my hair in a layered pixie-type style. On a previous video you recommended cutting the back in an M shape. I took a screenshot and brought it to my hair stylist. She said that was a terrific idea and we modified it a bit for my hair texture. It looks and feels so much better now, really emphasizes the volume and lift I am going for when I style it at home. Thanks for the tips. You have a new fan!

Thank you Justin! I feel like sending your video to every hair salon in my town! Since the pandemic I got so used to cutting my own hair that I still haven't found the courage to go back to professional hair stylists. The reason being that on leaving the hair salon I have to put on sun glasses and a hat so I won't get recognized on my way home! I have ended up with puffy "granny hair" so many times I just got fed up! It can actually be difficult for someone with silver hair to get a flattering and stylish cut because I've been told by hair stylists that I'm "too old" for some of the cuts I like. Why can't we clone you and have a Justin in every town and city in the world???

I also am 70 years old and have been doing hair for 45 years. I've always helped my clients with how to do their hair at home. If they can't do what I do to them they will not be happy. Also, for the ones that want/need to do their color themselves at home I help them with how to do that as well. Helping them builds confidence so they won't be worried about what they can do with their hair and also builds trust in the stylist. :) Love your content!!

I love this! You nailed it on the head. I’ve always thought that teaching clients about their hair and how to manage it it’s always the most important part of being a hairstylist. If you think of the clients needs first, sometimes that means teaching them how to, do things at home to fit within their time or budget. To me that doesn’t lose clients, that builds trust which is why I’m sure you have a really solid client retention rate as well. I always appreciate the feedback! Thanks a ton for the support!

@@danicave4564 I understand completely. At 64 ; was letting my hair grow long and even for 2 years. From 42 to 63 ,had short tight styles. Which was wash and go. No hair blowing or styling. In the 1970s. I had the Cher look. Then my hair starts turning Grey (salt & pepper), nice looking highlights. Not realizing that my hair texture changed. Show the girl a picture; thinking that's a nice cut. Remember; the customer is always right. After the cut ; she was using a medium round brush and then a hot iron. I said: I don't use those items. She said, it's for me to see the cut. It came out nice. But the next day; I wanted to cry. It looked uneven and horrible. When I try to style it. So now I'm letting it grow. And find another style. That’s beautifully refreshing. I’ve been cutting and coloring my own hair since I was in school. I just turned 40 and bleached my hair for the first time, almost no hair fall because I did crazy amounts of research. The last time a hairdresser touched my head I went in for a trim for my baby shower and she blow dried my curly hair straight! I was so mad!! Omg! Then when I asked her to put my curls back in my hair she got a 1.5in barrel curling iron and put big barrel curls in my hair… The manager ended up coming over because I was in tears, and asked me what was wrong. I said she straightened my damn hair, nobody ever asked for that! Wasn’t nobody else in this place but they needed to rush me out after trying to upsell and when I refused they STILL charged me almost $90!! I have MAJOR trust issues with hair stylists…

I’ve always hated my thin baby fine hair. I went to the best stylist in Dallas (supposedly) for help. He picked up pieces of hair from different heights then watched it fall down. Arrogantly he made a face, grunted with disgust then said, I can’t cut this. There was a line of women waiting to sit in his chair. That made me feel ugly for years.

@Peggy O’Reilly' // don't let that get to you. I'm 60, and also have baby fine thin hair and have gone to (the best of the best), so they claimed. I always walked away with tears. Those stylist are used to people walking in with thick, luscious hair, which means they're really not good stylist at all, but just used to cutting one type of hair. (With the exception of Justin Hickox course). I decided to walk into a stylist recommended and it (wasn't a fancy dancy place) but was wowed by the stylist. She said that instead of putting her money in a nice salon, she decided her money would go into ongoing learning. I walked out with a blunt cut right above my shoulders, and my hair looks so healthy and voluminous. I'll never go to anyone else but her. I'm also in Texas, but the Texas Hill Country. Hang in there. I know you'll find the right place. Besides, that's why we watch Justin's great KZread videos. It's helps us not only learn the correct language when we do go to a stylist, but what to do and what not to do.

I do disagree with you on the age of the stylist making a difference. My stylist was an older woman whom had done hair for 40 yrs. She gave me a pixie from hellomg. I took the time to explain I wanted a Bixie and what that was. She cut my hair extremely short also. I don't think how old she was had anything to do with it. Some people just cut hair better. She tried to sell me products to hold and shape. Beware if they do this. Also I couldn't see the back well in the mirror bec. of strategically placed bottles sitting on her station. Tells me it ain't the first time she ruined someone's hair. 😢

@PO:: Respecting your opinion, however as to young stylists one of the best I have had was a young girl and her haircuts were amazing but she moved so often from salon to salon I finally gave up following her.. On that note; I have paid high end prices where my hair has been butch*red whereas the hairdresser I now go to (and have been for a few years) is one that I found at a no appointment/walk-in establishment and she is totally amazing. i.e.: Give her a photo and she can replicate it but at the same time discuss its attributes or otherwise and no matter the style the result has been easy maintenance because of her cuts IMO. (BTW I'm 75 and she is 30 years old so is less than half my age.)

I used to be a stylist. I’m a nurse now, but I agree with your observations on all of these. Particularly the all the same length cut. I was trying to see how my hair would do super short and accidentally did that to myself and I have VERY thick wavy hair. It looked like a rug. Then as it grew out, like a troll doll. It was an epic fail. I now wear it long, in a shag. I have a very unique natural color, a silvery platinum blonde so I just enjoy it long and let my beachy waves flow.

Thank you for all your videos. They are very informative. I'm very glad I found you. I've been unhappy with almost every haircut I've received in the last 40 years. I've had no luck showing stylists photos of the styles I like. So, I would ask the stylist based on their professional opinion what style they would recommend. Based on my hair type, face shape, body shape, lifestyle, etc. I must be helpless and ugly. So far nothing. I've left my hair long and often wear it pulled back in a bun, like most older southeast Asian women.

Wow you just described what I couldn’t when I get my hair styled! It must be getting cut even all around because I have to try to adjust with styling and that’s just too much hassle so, on goes the ball cap! 🫤 I get a great cut occasionally that just works and is excellent and flattering then the next time….ugh! Sadly, in my experience, there aren’t that many stylists that understand the head shape and what each need to flatter the shape. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just found your channel! Subbed and liked -- hey, Justin, when we moved full-time into our tiny RV, I noticed my hair thinning like you shared. Turns out I used hats way more (keeping warm in the camper during winter while sleeping) and I also used hats/caps more because I spent way more time outdoors. We tend now to sleep with the heat off in our house, and I still have the habit of slapping a "nightcap" on my head, finding out that this contributes to thinning my hair during the winter!

First, I adore your videos! Thanks so much for creating the content. Secondly, If I could ask for a video topic, it would be that you do a deep dive into the differences between thin hair, fine hair, thick hair, coarse hair, straight hair, semi-curly or curly hair etc. (density vs textures). Also what a good style for each “type” or combination of hair densities & textures ( thin hair and coarse, thick hair and fine & straight, thin hair and fine & curly, etc) I’m 56 and have fine hair, that is straight, but I have a lot of it. So I don’t have thin hair. I don’t do any chemical processes to it or use many products, so it is pretty doggone healthy also. And, I’m lazy 😊. I dont spend much time on styling it, nor do I want to. Been there, done that. 😊 So basically an in-depth “definition” of hair types, densities, textures with examples of styles that would work well. Maybe a series of videos…. Anyway, thanks again for all you do! (And your wife too. She’s adorable)
