5.9 L Dodge Cummins tear down inspection reveals poor machining
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Dave and Joey give a master class in tear down analysis. Microscopic inspection by Trace Boss inspection equipment (a global leader in surface finish technology) exposes poorly honed cylinder walls causing excessive blow by on the top compression ring. The crankshaft was poorly ground leading to eminent bearing failure

Hello Dave: Thank you for this important video on surface finishes, use of a profilometor, + the basic dressing of the grinding wheel prior to grinding of the journals of a crankshaft. Dave you are to be commended for your detailed explanations of surface finish per application as well as the proper setup prior to grinding. I must say that you & your son are the first time I've ever seen a profilometer used in an automotive application. After 18 years in the aerospace industry we utilized a profilometer almost on a daily basis especially for armatures, & bearing bores. You also brought back many memories of the proper grinding operations especially needed for close tolerance work per application. Sorry for the rant but you & your crew constantly amaze me regarding knowledge, individual abilities, + the discipline to adhere to proper procedures & practices. Thank you again sir. God Bless you, your family, and your crew. TMP from N.J. 🙏

I usually pick up a Haynes book for each of the vehicles I've owned over the years - not necessarily to do the shade-tree mechanic thing, but to be informed on what is involved in repairing or replacing a specific part on that car. Each copy has a chapter on the steps involved in a general rebuild of an engine, and it includes how to assess certain major defects in the bottom half of the engine by the type of wear in the bearings on the crankshaft. One failure mode was 'tapered journal', and here you've finally explained how that failure mode comes to be, so thank you for that!

This video is an example of the quote (paraphrased): "The young professional knows all the rules. The aged professional knows all the exceptions." Young professionals have a good grasp on the general ideas. But the experienced professional knows all the fine little nuances that only experience can teach.
Best machine shop and engine builders for the average driver Iv ever seen. Get your engines built here folks…. Dave’s the man
I love Dave’s ability to describe the nuances in these projects. I was fortunate enough to have gone to a small voc-tech in Washington State, and luckily the old timers stressed the importance of each step to be done with cleanliness and accuracy. Checking tolerances every step of the way. Ring gaps, oil clearance see on every bearing surfaces, etc. I built two diesel engines with their supervision and each one turned out very good.
It's shocking to me you seem to be the ONLY shop in the business doing the right things. Kudos to you and your team. If my LML ever dies, I know where I'm going.

Smoothest, most deep, and cleanest, smokless build I may ever see. So jealous. I was wrong. Not even sure Banks does any rebuilds anymore or at all. Dave and that man think alike. It takes some fucking years and awesome knowledge to grind a crank and not screw it up. Listening to Dave he knows what he's doing.
Dave, I love watching your show. I sure wish I could find an aircooled vw builder that takes as much care as you and your crew. If I ever acquire a diesel that needs rebuilding, your shop will have the work.

Hey Dave, just wanted to say that i am loving your video clips and i have learnt. So much from your clips. I am a technician from Australia. I have not much engine building experience, Thank you Sir!!
Great shop Dave. You are blessed with a good business, personality shop culture and crew. I worked in CAT dealer Long Island in my 20-something days that had similar operation with general repair and machine shop and that is the ONLY way to go. (I used to dream of being the field tech) Your shop is resurrection of a dying breed. Back when I was a kid, even most auto part stores had machine shops in the back. Not so today! We left Diesel School knowing basics to rebuild heads, turbos, alternators, starters, even high pressure pumps and run test stand. In the real world many of us lose some of those skills but in your shop can apply a full set. From fuel injection troubleshooting to engine building, suspension etc. The trainees should be paying you!
Am grateful to watch your videos

I learned from a man just like Dave. It made my life so good. Thank you for showing others what we take pride in Dave!
DAVE. THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS. I worked for a automotive certification company, you need to put out a "XYZ Certification" of shops who are QUALIFIED to do your level of work so that not everyone who lives near you can get repairs done right. Our company became rich, but what we did was we certified which body shops had the right types of equipment to do a quality repair and gave them a "certification" with a wall plaque, etc, and then we did a little marketing for their shops that got them business (this was how they justified the COST to become certified). If you need help, I'm a programmer who does and did this work for them to make this all easy for both sides.
Top flight info guys - brings back old memories . Thanks fellers ! Good crew & shop .
I’m learning so much it’s unreal. Thank you a million times over.

Love these informative videos. Small note: I find it incongruous how the intro has the sound of an old F1 engine with the car being what appears to be a Lincoln Continental (or something like that) in the logo. Should be an American V8 rumble in my humble opinion.
You guys are just too good. Poor machinists and machine shop equipment ruin lots of motors. When you have rotating assemblies spinning like a child’s top, everything better be fitting flush and level or something will be stressed by a poor friction plane. Oil can only protect metal to metal if it has a an even lubricating film. I enjoy watching you guys analyze failures in your tear downs. Takes good equipment and good techs to use that good equipment. Keep ‘em coming Dave.

The engine builder went through all the effort it’s too bad they didnt catch those out of spec measurements before assembly. The surface profilometer that Dave has is probably 2500-3000$ bucks but there’s no substitute for it . I own three classic bmws .All with Alusil v8 blocks. Which is 80% Aluminum and 20% silicon. The surface finish is absolutely vital for the low tension rings to seal and prevent oil consumption/ blow by. My M5 engine is 25 years old now and quite rare (used motors are now 12,000$ and up) Dave is probably one of a select few who I would trust rebuilding that engine. His passion is still there after all these years

Your point of doing all or nothing is a valid one. I don’t build engines. But I have a shop and I will put rebuilt engines in. I will not give the truck back until I run it myself to break it in and change the break in oil. I am not going to rely on someone else to change the oil on time and possibly destroy what a good builder has done.
You are amazing. I’ve been working on motor’s all my life and and show me things I knew nothing about. Cheers
I was an import car and light truck tech for over 35 years, retired now, but learning something. Thanks.
I would love to see you guys do a tear down and full build on a 6.4 Powerstroke/Maxxforce 7 and see if it’s possible to build that engine and make it reliable!
They should play your videos in Automotive Tech and Engineering Schools because I am learning more about engines here than from anyone I have known, heard of, or has been famous for engine building.
Dave should write a book of tips and tricks to rebuild motors properly. I’d buy it! Watching these vids, I’ve realized mistakes I’ve made over the years.
I do things just like you do Dave. I get a 40 yr old radio in I can tell how long it was used I can tell if a hack or a good Tech was in there and I can see what it needs. Inspection cleaning and using the right tools and supplies makes the end result so much better and It`s better then new from the factory when I`m done. And I do a live feed on KZread for my customers to watch me build the radio if the desire to do so. I`m the ONLY CB shop that does this It`s un believable that more shops don`t do so. And I always find horrible mods and hacks
love the vid. i learn more every time I watch one. thanks for teaching us.

Incredible insight. Another great video.
These Dodge Trucks with the 5.9L are one of my favorite combinations. If you treat an old mechanical 5.9L correctly and change the oil when your supposed too. In the railyard industry from 1995-2008 all the spotter trucks and alot of the heavy equipment was all 5.9L non electronic, non emission great engines kept freight moving at all the Chicagoland area anyway.
You need to make the motto for the Monster builds "Gooder Than New!"
