    I agree with the sentiment that “… I don’t want a 5.7 for the price…” Unfortunately, my revelation has been delivered after acquiring two of them. That being said: Tools, do you foresee a difference in results if the ‘Tool of choice’ was a CMMG Banshee chambered in such a caliber - or just more of the same for more money???

    I have the ruger 57,ruger lc,keltec p50,psa rock57x2(optics & non optics). Cmmg 300mk 57 upper. Something about that 5.7x28 round,been in love with it since i discovered it a few years back. I know that ammo is pricey atm but the more manufacturers that make more firearms that use this round,the more the price should drop. I think this round is a good home defense round due to the penetration not being so deep & the speed of it is more than enough to do the damage needed to stop an intruder or small game. I like the 22 magnum as well & own a few firearms that use em,but what i like about the 5.7 round is the ability to carry a massive ammount vs 9mm or 556/223. As with any ammo,all can get the job done if the placement is right. I will be taking all my 5.7,s to the range here soon to sight them in(after i green dot bore sight em) then i will be doing some small game hunting with my ruger precision 22mag this year. But my 5.7's rock 57 has become my EDC. This pistol is just B.A. & the low recoil def helped my accuracy a lot. Stay safe,great video & yall be safe out there.

    From Federal's website for the Speer TNT ammo: "When you rely on rimfire for putting down distant varmints, reach for Federal Premium Speer® TNT®. The bullet's thin jacket results in explosive performance on impact, and its reliable priming and propellant provide extremely consistent ballistics. Extreme accuracy Explosive expansion on impact Speer TNT bullet design Reliable priming and propellant" Seems to me like the idea is for it to expand reliably at longer ranges. If you're up for it, maybe try the TNT in gel at 100+ yards and see if it expands instead of fragmenting once it gets downrange a ways. That said, if it will fragment reliably at shorter ranges, it may be a good choice for short range pest control where overpenetration may be a concern.

    Now that was a really interesting test Tools. I sure didn't expect those results. From all the hype about the 5.7 I sure expected much better results from that round. I will say most of the test I've seen of the 5.7 have all been shorter barreled handguns. The TNT sure did "explode" on impact. Would be interesting to see if it's any good against a real life target, most likely only for some small game. I wonder what it would have done vs. some kind of barrier, be it clothing or otherwise. Now the other 22 mag seems to have performed very good. With cost of both equipment and ammo the 22 mag is my choice over that 5.7. Be safe and ever vigilant.

    Well, no, it doesn’t. Tools calculated the energy. On top of that, the bullet action was pathetic. If it can’t penetrate 12 inches of clear gel, it sure as hell won’t in 10% or in actual bodies. The round is pure hype. Even 198LF will only penetrate a few inches in gel after going thru a lvl2 panel. Sure it penetrates, but does little after doing so.

    I would love to see how the FN 5.7 X 28 40-GRAIN V-MAX (SS107) would do in this test vs. CCI Maxi-Mag 40 gr HP. I don't care much for the featherweight (27 or 30 grain) rounds in either 5.7x28 or the .22WMR.

    The 22WMR TNTs are great on prairie poodles and European starlings. Very low chance of ricochets or pass-throughs, and they drop the vermin decisively. Not great on critters much larger than jackrabbits, though. I like the fact that the 5.7 is more reliable than the rimfire and can be reloaded, but not enough to get one, at least not in a carbine/rifle.

Cheaper, its been perfecred for a century, and the tool selection is amazing. 22 mag was going to be my first pistol a couple years ago, but...rimfire is just (by design) less reliable. Good test, Tools! The TNT is a varmint round so perhaps not the best comparison? I've never been a big fan of the 5.7 x 28 while I'm a huge fan of the .22 Mag! I think that with the proper ammo the Mag will more or less hang in there with the 5.7. The 5.7 has pretty much priced itself out my range while the .22 mag hasn't gone up quite as much as most other rounds. I'll just stick with the 22 mag until I suddenly get rich or a 5.7 falls out the sky and lands in my lap! Cheers, crkckr

I picked up some .22wmr during Ammogeddon for my Heritage Rough Rider, Speer Gold Dot Personal Protection Short Barrel 40gr GDHP-SB. Curious how this compares against other 'non-short barrel' .22wmr. What the hell, if you have one, how about in the 16" bbl Rough Rider? That's the gun I have chambered for .22wmr so far...I bought what I could for it when I saw some, and it happened to be the short barrel defense ammo. Love your work, man.

    Those Speer TNTs might work better out of a pistol and a tad lower velocity. You should try those in the PMR30. The 5.7 did exactly what it was designed to do. Tumble and yaw while dumping the energy into the target creating a very nasty wound but I’d like to see a bit more penetration out of those. A very good video comparison and proof that the 22 mag isn’t such a bad choice for self defense it’s only draw back is the rimfire which isn’t always as reliable as a center fire.

    Pretty sure the TNT is a varmint round and did what it's supposed to do. That Armscor looked like it would be good for larger small game, like the dog size deer we had where I used to live. I don't see a use case for me with the 5.7. I don't have the room to buy one of everything.

  • @calangel
    @calangel Жыл бұрын

    Yes, the Speer TNT is designed to do that. It is a bonded bullet, made exactly like a gold dot, but the jacket is much thinner. With your demonstration, it's obvious that factory 5.7x28mm doesn't really make sense vs factory 22WMR, just about regardless of the barrel length. My PMR 30 never has issues anymore. As reliable as a center fire.

    I'd really like to see you get ahold of some CCI 22mag. Gamepoint bullets and try them out in the gel as I have a feeling they would preform as a really good self defense 22mag. round in pistol or longer barrel length rifles etc. but they are a 40gr. bullet and a speer bullet as well and it's a soft point bullet as well and it says they are 1,875fps and I've always had pretty good luck with them on bigger game animals like coyotes and such but I'd really like to see how they compare to others in the gel and I'm just guessing they would be a really good self defense load outta any barrel length but there is only one way to know for sure and I don't have the material or the funds to do such a test but it sure would be awesome if you could pick some up to compare to all the others, I guess that is if you can find ya some around your area but I definitely recommend looking for and getting some to try out.
