#10MinuteTalk

Jimmy and Mark stand up for way more than 10 minutes with Ryan Muckenhirn to discuss the mighty little FN 5.7. This cartridge has been around for a long time but still seems new and exciting every time it finds its way into a new firearm brand’s handgun or rifle. Ryan breaks down its performance, both in some of the professional loads and guns FN originally designed it for, and in some of the civilian firearms we see on the market today with civilian ammo. Could it be used for hunting? Is it a viable self-defense cartridge? Is it the cartridge itself or the guns its chambered in that make this little devil so dang cool??

6:00 The biggest difference with the 5,7mm round is that the casing is not tapered towards the top like most rifle cartridges. It is cylindrical, so in order to extract properly, the cartridge is coated with a very special lubricant on the outside, so it slides out the breech cleanly. Other suppliers do seem to have some difficulty getting this exactly right. This is also a challenge for the reloaders.

I love my M&P 5.7 Runs like a dream It is silly how far you can accurately hit targets repeatedly I think 5.7 is having a renaissance. It just makes SO MUCH SENSE in a handgun when it comes to recoil and shots on target. I REALLY want to see a copper hot load like a Black Dragon Fang on that bear skull you all tested! If a 9mm is viable for bear defense... would a hot monolithic copper projectile do the job? Consider the fact of just how many rounds you can put on target at a farther distance. I think it needs to be tested!

The FN 5.7 is what sits in my wife’s bedside safe. Soft shooting cartridge that brings more than sufficient energy in a home defense scenario. I would like to know where you’ve found the “cheap” ammo. I’ve been paying $45+ per box but the FN made stuff is all I’ve found in stores by me!

I know this podcast was like 3 years ago, and maybe at that time 5.7 was cheaper??? However... you currently pay between $0.73-$1.20/round for plain old 40 grain FMJ rounds. Also... I now load my own and can actually get 5-6 reloads out of them without issue.

If the boutique stuff wasn't prohibitively expensive, I'd consider the 5.7x28mm. As of now, I'd be more inclined to get the Underwood XD 68gr +p in 9mm as that will punch 3a armor as well. Higher terminal effects against unarmored targets as well. If I need something to hit farther than 9mm, get a real rifle caliber.

The P90 would be a great SBR. Surely someone will start manufacturing of conventionally formed brass for the 5.7 which would speed production and only require a new set of dies and just might result lower retail pricing. I believe more firearms will result in more demand for ammo and more interest in ammo manufacturers joining the party.

Coming back and hearing a trigger-finger-actuated safety called intuitive still doesn't make sense. I can only think of two weapon with 'swipe trigger finger down' sort of safeties, the AK variants and the FN57, with maybe cross bolts being close enough to qualify, but entirely defying every rifle or shotgun with a tang safety, or the famous Rem 700 strong side thumb safety and things that copy it like the CZ 457, or the most intuitive thumb safety of every AR15 and variant, ACR, XCR, G36, HK roller series and CEMTEs, almost every handgun with a safety or decocker, even the 92FS is thumb activated even if it's in the wrong spot it's a similar motion,. I want to like the FiveSeven, but those controls are very much outliers, and FN still didn't fix it on the Gen 3 model.

No one can deny the coolness factor of the p90, ps90, and five-seven, but the terminal performance of the 5.7x28 round leaves a lot to be desired. The 5.7 is kind of a one trick pony built for the Cold War. Having said that, the positives are the guns are light, hold a lot of rounds, and easy to shot. Another positive is Speer is coming out with a 5.7x28 gold dot offering.

40 grain bullets. 5.7 w/ 16" barrel is roughly 2,300 fps 22 mag with 24" barrel is roughly 1,800 fps And mind you the 5.7 uses spitzer bullets while the 22 mag uses round nose, let alone performance in shorter barrels. This is same mindset that says "5.56 is basically just a .22 LR" because you just refuse to look at the numbers.
