#10MinuteTalk

If you’re familiar with all four official NATO cartridges, you had to know this one was coming as the grand finale to our NATO cartridges series. The incredible 50 BMG - perhaps sometimes looked at as though made of unicorn horns and leprechaun dust - Ryan Muckenhirn explains the origins of this old beast, what its reasonable capabilities actually are, its many applications, and why you should have a half inch gun in your own safe for when SHTF. You simply can’t miss the one about the biggest of them all.

I was in a heavy weapons infantry company from 2013-2019, I've heard every myth about this cartridge and the M2 Weapons platform possible. My favorite is it's against the geneva convention to shoot at people with it. Wrong, we do gunnery and shoot troop targets, and in afghanistan... yeah we shoot people with it. It works

I'd really like to see a 10MinuteTalk on the 35 Whelen. This is a fantastic cartridge for North American game up to and including brown bears. It's really surprising how much you can get out of the old ought six case. There are factory loadings that push 200gr bullets over 2900fps!

Why take a 50BMG when you are gonna be hunting dangerous game from a max of 200 yards. On top of this .375 H&H and 500NE are cheaper and wont obliterate the hide or skull of the game. Its the same reason noone huntings with their m200 intervention which is in .408 cheytac. Its a precision cartridge design to shoot for MILES. You could use it but why ?

  • @Fulcrum205

Because it's too damn heavy and unwieldy. The big bears, Elephants, Cape Buffalo, and big cats are usually stalked in thick cover. Shots are close and fast. A 32lb, 5 foot long rifle is not the right tool for that job. A lot of these guys I see on safari are not in the physical condition to hump a weapon that large in equatorial Africa anyway. African hunting isn't about needing more lethality. Modern big game bullets will punch right through most anything you care to shoot them at. It's usually a bad shot by the shooter or PH that gets someone mauled or trampled into mush.

A little disappointed in this talk actually. The .50 BMG fell in and out of favor a number of times. The original vision of .50 BMG was anti tank, but it was obsolete for that purpose before it reached the battle field. It was picked up for HMG use when JMB invented the M2. It proved very useful in WWII as an aircraft MG as well. When we moved away from HMG's to general purpose MG's the .50BMG once again struggled to find its place. Today, the .50 serves mostly in a defensive vehicle mounted role and as an anti material cartridge thanks to Mr. Barrett.

I recall the BMG wasn't fielded before WW1 ended. It was indeed slightly obsolete by that time. However, that could have fixed by using tungsten core projectiles. However, tank armor advances would have again rendered them obsolete. You are correct about recoil. I had a Serbu BFG-50. Recoil was similar to a 12ga 2 3/4 shot load. When fired, the first thought is "Damn, this is going to hurt as the rifle accelerates backwards, but as soon as the projectile exits the muzzle brake, the acceleration abruptly stops. Indeed, it's not bad at all. Plus it weighed 33 lbs with scope. Please note, this was the single shot bolt action, not the one with a screw on breach.
