Dynapoints first showed up in the 70s in .22LR. The.22 Mag Dynapoints have been around about 15 years or so now I believe. Pretty sure I first saw them at WalMart prior to 2010. And yeah they are a squirrel load out of an accurate rifle.

If you know what the WRF is if I remember right it was a 45grain at about 1450 fps.It was the same diameter and a good small game round.I believe winchester wanted to get close to to that with the dynapoint.The other loadings in the 22 mag are very destructive on the small editable critters.

I remember back in the 70s when Dynapoints were first being talked about in .22LR loadings. I recall reading how they had been tested on kangaroos in Australia 🦘. My take was that their whole point was increased penetration over typical hollow points while still delivering better expansion than round noses. A performance split or better balance.

Damn that barkeep was putting out velocities even a 125 grain 38 special revolver could beat from a shorter barrel with almost 3 times the mass/weight. I've been thinking about getting my first 22 magnum, and I'd definitely want something as reliable as possible. Gel looked good, but I'd lean more towards the Hornady or CCI loads in my personal preference.

Great video. I was actually really getting into (back into) 22 and 22 magnum a few years ago then it went to the back burner for some reason. With ammo prices still so high, might make sense to come back around to so good old 22 👍🏽

I know this is an old video but the slow/weak results are on purpose. That is because the Dynapoints are not intended to be a 'true" .22WMR load. Instead, they are intended to mimic the performance of the now mostly defunct .22 WRF (Winchester Rimfire) load which was kind of a forerunner to the WMR with performance somewhere between .22LR and the later .23 WMR. They are made to the size and case length so that they can be fired from modern WMR firearms but, unlike most WMR loads, have a copper washed bullet like a .22LR instead of a true jacket and are intentionally loaded lighter. Apparently the WRF was great for small game because it hit harder than .22LR but wouldn't do as much damage to meat as a higher velocity .22WMR can. Sort of a 'sweet spot' for small game, supposedly, that some people missed - so Winchester created a WMR load intended to give similar performance.
The long rifle version of the Winchester dyna point came out many years ago and it was one of the rounds I used for pistol practice back in the 90s so it must have been available in a bulk pack or maybe not. I remember reading that the long rifle dyna point was quite popular with African professional hunters because they found the round was very effective in their “two two” rifles for pot game like birds and small mammals. One professional even had his clients use his long rifle bolt action with dyna points for harvesting the really small antelope like duikers, oribi and dik dik.
@ToolsandTargets

Makes sense especially for the small critters.😎👍
That actually surprised me. Looks like Winchester knew what they were doing, at least from carbine barrels. Overall, not bad at all. I was impressed that out of that carbine you were getting about the same foot pound energy as a .38 special. The double-deuce magnum isn't to be underestimated, apparently. I was watching this while discussing .22 mag and other ballistics with a life-long dear friend (with whom I've discussed ballistics and guns for about 40 years, LOL) ... I think I gotta get me a Walther WMP ... maybe after I get a S&W 5.7 M&P ... hmmm .... LOL. Great video as always. Thanks!

Nice comparison through different platforms. I find it interesting you had a cycling issue as Winchester DynaPoint is the only .22 Mag ammo that I have had trouble cycling through my Kel-Tec PMR30.
