5,376 Layer Feather Damascus: Feather Fighter Part. 2
I'm making 5,376 layer feather damascus (256 "W" layers)! Feather damascus is very near and dear to me since early in my knifemaking journey feather pattern damascus was one of my most ordered patterns, there were only a small handful of makers, at that time, making feather damascus. It's been a while now since I've made some feather damascus, join me as I pour myself into this new edged-art creation. First off we're forging out a feather damascus fighter with feather damascus fittings and a hunting knife. I'm using sheet metal and the welder to seal off the layers as I forge weld damascus so they're not exposed to atmosphere to achieve super clean forge welds with no flux required. Watch and learn how to make a knife, we start by making my feather pattern damascus.
Watch the whole build here:

I am a full-time Mastersmith knifemaker, and I love my job! I specialize in forged fixed blade knives and also make many other types of edged art.
In March of 2007, I went to the W.F. Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas where I took a two week class on Intro to Bladesmithing under ABS Mastersmiths Burt Gaston and Greg Neely. This is where I learned how to make a blade that would pass the ABS Journeyman Smith Performance Test, after that I took a class on Handles and Guards under ABS Mastersmith Jim Walker where I learned how to make handles out of stag, exotic woods and many other materials.
In June, 2011 I received my Mastersmith Stamp at the Atlanta BLADE Show. Now that I have been granted my MS certification I have a desire to expand my field and continue learning and teaching what I learn, God has given me all the opportunities and teachers that I’ve had and I thank Him for giving me the ability to do something I love.
Follow me on this epic edged art journey!
Thanks for watching
Enjoy!

KyleRoyerKnives - I'd personally be fine with either streaming or download, I was just curious is all lol. The streaming worked nicely for when I ordered Paul Long's basic sheath video, so I have no objections to it. :)
Your dad is an amazing person. His support of you is neverending. And has the so much respect for you he's willing to put his pride on the shelf and be your apprentice. There's not many fathers that would be willing to do that. It's really cool to watch all of you together. Thanks for sharing.

Love the lay out of your feather Kyle, i know its a difficult pattern to work with so many welds to delam at any time in the process ! I need to work on bigger billets now to keep the pattern intact, spent last week perfecting crushed W feather. Feather is the pattern that started my journey into pattern welding. Loz.

Very good video, Dad does a great job. I'm anxious to see the on line training video I'm sure it will be very helpful. I have a question about belt grinders, most knife makers use a 2X72, would a 6X48 be as good or close to as good as a 2X72 for knife making. Another thing is a forged blade better than a ground blade using the same steel, I think I saw a video or heard that it was, something to do with the molecular structure of the steel.
@KyleRoyerKnives
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kenneth, you will be able to put a lot more psi on the surface of a 2” belt. A 6” belt will spread the psi out over a larger area. I believe the wider the belt the harder it will be to remove material. Dad

How do you make sure the hole through the side of the pommel nut is straight or 90* from the blade when you tighten it down?
Oh no sorry to hear about the Bowie, was there weld flaw or a fracture from the quench? I guess I'll have to wait to see, but that's no fun. But I know Kyle has the persistence to make it right, otherwise he could never had made it to the level he is now. Great video and content as always!

That’s right aulik. There are simply aesthetic preferences .Both client and maker preferences. Great question Thanks Dad
That feather should become a curmetrical double sharp edged dagger with it's sweet pattern up the center of the blade maybe an auto?

Amateur tip :-) Just save up your "I can use that later" bits, and when you have a batch, throw them in your oven one evening for an overnight spheroidal anneal. (To be totally honest, that's a tip I got from Kevin Cashen.) Clyde
