I believe we discussed this before lol. I’ve said in one of my reloading and rambling videos that people do the nickelback thing, just hate something because they think it’s cool to hate it, even if there’s no real reason to.

“The Nickelback thing” is a great analogy! Some people just like to be followers and pile on! I’m not running out to get front row tickets, but when you hear them (besides maybe a bit of overexposure) there’s really nothing to hate ! Just like the ol .40…… which is my edc. S&W M&P40 full size retired police gun

Hey there KP, & Mrs. KP, I've carried my S&W 4006, steel frame, 40S&W since 1990. I've seen cartridge "fads" come and go and I've listened to many arguments against the caliber. I am a big beleiver in "carry the largest caliber you can shoot well. I'm just over 60yo and was quite ill for years. Still the 4006 was on my hip. I think Paul Harrell did a great job comparing the calibers. I find the extra weight of the steel frame mitigates felt recoil. Keep up the great work, you two, and God bless.

I started out with a Glock-22 and Glock-27. My initial reason for leaving the caliber was reload cost vs 9mm. Then with the better performing 9mm rounds and extra capacity, I never looked back.

Hello K.P. I've been subbed to your channel since before you ran 1,000 rounds through a G2c and had the family loading mags, as a Deputy Sheriff back in the early 80s My duty and EDC was and is, the 357-Magnum, the 9mm ammo back then was lame, however, bullet tech has come a long way, so 4 years ago this month, I got a great deal on a G2c, and I swap out between the 357 & 9mm, the 40-S&W is a fine caliber, I choose the 9x19, because there is so much to choose from and It's less expensive, I'm sorry to hear about YT booting you, I'll be sure to check out the places you mentioned, Thanks for posting and a Happy New Year To You and Yours. 👍 🇺🇸

I'm a 40 S&W and 45 ACP guy... I've accepted that it is a 9 mm world. That said, I carry 40 or 45 Shield 2.0. After talking to few people in the medical field (1in particular who trained in a trauma center in Orlando, if I recall properly)... They tell me that the 9 mm is not a very effective round for self defense... According to them, 9 mm victims come in the ER typically running their mouths about what they are going to do to the guy that shot them, when they get out... Conversely, those shot by 45 ACP and 357 magnum are typically either unconscious from blood loss or already deceased... Since 40 S&W is ballistically similar to 357 magnum, in the testing I've seen, I expect that it also is a "manstopper" round. I'm not knocking 9 mm, completely, someone else I highly respect (Dick Fairburn), suggests that 9 mm is adequate for civilian self defense... But believes the 40 is the "Goldielocks" round for law enforcement... I agree. I know this rather long just to say I prefer 40 and have since the mid 1990's.

I carried a 40 S&W handgun on duty for years back when it could do no wrong. Everybody wanted one because "they said" the 9mm was inadequate. My how things have changed. Obviously the 40 SW is more powerful than a 9mm, generally. Enough to make a difference? Who knows. Personally, I saw scores at the range improve when we transitioned back to the 9mm. Mostly because of the timed drills where the targets turn after so many seconds. Even though it is close, the time to recover from the recoil to fire the next shot was a bit faster with the 9mm, especially since the handguns were the same size and weight as the 40 SW. We are talking fractions of seconds but on those specific drills it made a difference to some people. How relevant that is to the real world is anyone's guess.

👍👍I’ve never been a hater of any caliber because to me they all have their place and they all have their following. There are several calibers that are good for edc and people have to find what’s right for them. I carry 9mm because it does the job very well and doesn’t cost you an arm an a leg when buying it. Also it’s the most popular caliber and I can always find what I need when some others can be hard to find. I also like pocket carrying a snub nose revolver in 38 spl when deep concealment is appropriate. Appreciate what you do, hope you have a great 2024.

Thanks, that was a breath of fresh air! I picked the .40 S&W in 1994, when I was just getting into guns and I knew very little about them. Was trying to decide between 9mm and .45, and then I read a magazine article about the .40 caliber and it seemed like the best of both worlds. Only 15 rounds instead of 17, but that seemed acceptable. Not too long after I bought my Glock 22 they limited mags to 10 rounds out here in Commie-fornia, so it then definitely was looking better than 9mm. You could argue that 10 rounds of .45 would be better still, but a double-stack .45 like the Glock 21 was a bit too big for my hands. Lately, with all the talk about bullet improvements, I was questioning my decision and wondering if I should switch to 9mm, but I'm a reloader with two .40 cal Glocks and lots of .40 brass and bullets, as well as the reloading dies, so I was hesitant to change over. Now I'm glad I stuck with .40 cal!

My EDC is an XDS in .40 and I love it. It doesn't loose much capacity when looking at the 9mm in the same model. whereas the drop in capacity when going to a .45 is significant. I have the Shield in 9mm too but I just have a lot of confidence in the .40 and always choose that one. The recoil seems to me like it's just exaggerated by many people. Totally manageable and I repeat shots with it just fine.

Very good video. Comprehensive and to the point. KZreadr Paul Harrell has made many videos testing calibers on meat targets. He tested the .40 in at least one video and demonstrated you can indeed shoot it fine and the round has no problem pulverizing such a target. The proof is in the pudding, and the .40 seems neither short nor weak.

I've carried guns chambered in calibers from 5.7 x 28 to .45 ACP, depending on what I had at the time, what I was wearing, etc. Given handgun round terminal ballistics--all handgun rounds will be more helpful in groups rather than single shots; the standard cartridges do more or less the same--a full gun and a couple of reloads in a centerfire cartridge that you can shoot well will get you through most days. On the other days, it's time to fetch a long gun.

That being said I think a lot of people myself included drank the kool-Aid on this one, and just got fed a bunch of crap . I carry 9 mm and .40 there are good load's out there for both ! As far as that goes there are good load's for just about any caliber you want to carry if you're willing to put in the time and $ to train with said caliber. I think 357sig is another excellent choice that people are sleeping on IMHO. If not mistaken the KSP carry Glock 22 in .40 cal . They don't seem to have any major issues with it as far as I know? There are many good ammo choices out there today.

The way it was explained to me was that the more powerful cartridge was basically thrown into a firearm designed for a less powerful cartridge. Take a 9mm, whack in a .40 barrel, remove the material from the frame to allow the larger barrel, then sell it as a new firearm. So, it would be much more prone to breakage and that extra power and less mass, let alone the additional recoil and shock of firing a stronger round would cause inaccuracy and fatigue. Sounded legit to me. But I was also told if the firearm was designed from scratch to handle the power, it was just fine. They strengthened the areas needed and it could handle the additional shock and power of the cartridge and you just had a stronger and heavier firearm. Hope I explained that right!

It has got some power to it, l'm used to my 9mm and the 40 has alot more punch to it, well take a couple of more trips to the range to get used to it for a carry gun. I'm 61 and the recoil of the 40 will take a little time to get used to.

I don't carry the .40 anymore but it isn't because the round has lost my favor. The only gun I have chambered for it is a Glock Model 27. Like many Glock owners, I got the "customize" hook set in my mouth with that little compact carry gun. Oh man! I ordered the whole shebang from the Glock Store. ...Come to think of it, Lenny Magill should have sent me a Christmas card. Anyway, I pimped that little gun out so bad with a fancy trigger and gold plated doodads that I can't carry it anymore. If I had to use it on Satan himself, I think the prosecution could use the gun alone to make me look bad. Lesson to be learned? Don't pimp your carry gun out. Oh and this time of year when I can wear some clothes in Kentucky, I do carry a full size Dan Wesson 1911 in 10mm. As Clint Smith says, "It isn't what's comfortable but what makes you comfortable." I've shot and fooled with guns for so long that I could care less what is popular. Not to sound arrogant, but I know enough to choose what works best for me. I think the 40 S&W is a great self-defense round. It's big enough to be effective but small enough to still give decent capacity and acceptable recoil. Ammo is still cheap and plentiful too.

Everything is a trade-off. I think the negatives of the .40 just don’t outweigh the positives of the 9mm. Recoil, capacity, cost, and availability (platform availability as well) just don’t stack well in the .40s favor imo. I have a 40 P229 and I’m not getting rid of it. One of the huge positives about 40 is that even in the depths of the ammo shortages, I could always find 40. Might have been defensive ammo rather than range ammo but I could always find some kind of 40s

Interesting, I haven't any experience with .40, at all actually, so I'm no hater for sure. A buddy of mine I work with, recently picked-up a .40 pistol just a few weeks ago and he loves it. I've not had a chance of going over and shooting it yet, but we're planning too shortly. I can absolutely see why some really like that caliber though, and heck I'd never think 10+1 rounds isn't enough either. As far as recoil and being snappy, I get it, but I do have a 1911 in .45 AUTO and love that thing, just not for edc, too big of a pistol to carry around every day for my likes and person:) HA!

I think a lot of the hate for the 40 was stirred by James Yeager I had nothing against the guy but he was a very vocal 40 hater. I carry a shield in 40 cal in the summer and a g29 10mm in the winter. I have a couple of 9mils also but don’t hardly ever carry one. Not because I feel under gunned I just feel there are better options. I love the bullet technology argument, like the 9 is the only bullet that got better. The other thing is I own 40s 9s 10s 45s 357s a s&w50 several 22s and can’t think of a round I hate. But a lot of 9 mm guys definitely hate on 40. He hated 1911s for awhile too then he changed his mind and started liking them. I think a lot of folks just jump on a bandwagon with others before really learning and being able to make an educated opinion for themselves. I am not trying to persuade anyone to carry a .40. I just don't understand why it gets so much hate. Thanks for watching and Happy New Year :-)

    I think we were hood winked on 9mm , it's capable but 40 & 10mm are More and not the bucking Bronco it's Reputation has. I carry a CZ P07/ 9mm OR-XDE 3.8 10MM . I think it was step 1 of New World Order 😂.

I’ll have to admit, I’ve never had the pleasure of shooting a 10mm. I imagine the XDE is a bit “snappy”, but it doesn’t stop you from carrying it! I honestly can’t feel a difference in recoil between a 9 & 40, but how about between the 40 and the 10? And why police departments blindly follow that certain “alphabet agency” is beyond me……..🤷🏼‍♂️✌🏼👍🏼 I’ve heard that some cops don’t want to hand their .40’s in for the 9er.

First off let me say hello from your northern brethren in the Hoosier state 🤜🤛. I was watching Flannel Daddy interview the God Father Paul Harrel & he (Paul) mentioned your channel. Figured if the God Father has respect & views your channel as doing a good job in representing the 2A community. Well then I’d better get over here & subscribe soon as I’m done watching this interview. In which I did so with that said… Reasons I think .40cal’s hated is 100% ppl followed a fad on the grams or some silly 💩 like that. I’d say as far as EDC protection goes, anything north of 22lr or 32auto is going to be sufficient. I’m not big on .380 but I’m also not against it either. I’ve picked 9mm as my EDC to be uniform in my sidearm caliber. I have two 9mm Glock19’s & a .357 Taurus model 605. I just picked up the 605 this last November bc I’ve always wanted a wheel gun. I grabbed up the 5 shot 605 with 100rds of .357 & 100rds of .38 special +P for a total of $384.** I was EDC a S&W M&P Shield+ in 9mm but I have wanted to get into shooting a sidearm with a red dot. Bc I’m not made of $$$ I slide my GEN5 G45 & Shield+ so I could go buy a GEN5 G19 MOS. I normally would never sell 2 to buy 1 but that’s the only way I was able to buy something optics ready. I picked up a Holosun HS407c that had never been used & another G19 bc track record. I can’t say perfection as Glock claims bc their MOS/plates from the manufacturer are a joke. I stripped the threads on the manufacturer’s provided plate after being told by several ppl I didn’t need a torques tool. Nonetheless two G19’s one a GEN4 & the other a GEN5, a .357/38, ofc a Ruger 10/22, Ruger 5.56, two 12g shotguns. A Remington 1100 & a Charles Daly tactical pump. These are all from a necessity standpoint, if everything goes belly up in America I want to know I have the best & most reliable protection possible. Imo that’s Glocks & Rugers

Strangely. 180 grain .40 supressed sounds better than 230 grain .45 supressed out of my h&k USP tacticals with omega 45k. Ill never understand how a higher pressure round is quieter to ear.

--- THIS IS A LOT OF WORDS! READ AT THE PERIL OF YOUR TIME! --- @KentuckyPatriot Great video, sir. I intend to own a Glock sometime this coming year. I would prefer to have a pistol with a 4.5" barrel or longer. The Lord saw fit to have me be born and raised in the communist dystopia of IL, and at present a law abiding citizen may only buy pistols with 15 round magazines or less. Most 9mm Glock models that have a longer barrel also come standard with 17 rounds mags. Enter the Glock 22! Only learned about this model a few months ago. It's a beautiful piece, especially considering that it has a 4.5" barrel, comes standard with 15 round mags, and can be easily converted to fire 9mm or 357 Sig. There is an FDE version of the G22 Gen 3, called the G22X, at one of my local gun stores. It comes with night sights, a ported slide/barrel, and an RMR optics cut! And the price is right, too! Right now I can find 40 S&W ammo locally for a pretty reasonable price. Shoot, 380 ammo for my pocket pistol costs more! I still feel plenty well armed with a pistol in 380, 9, or 45. But 40 would suit my situation better for more reasons than I've listed here. Hope this food for thought is useful to someone. As @PaulHarrell would say, "I'm not trying to tell you what you should do, I'm only telling you what I do." (BTW, I miss his content lately, and pray he and his are enjoying a safe, happy and healthy NYE). Anyway, thanks for reading. Shalom.

Communist dystopia of IL! I literally laughed out loud when I read that lol. I appreciate you comment and your words were not at all a peril of my time. I love this channel and the opportunities it gives me to chat and share ideas with wonderful folks such as yourself. God bless you and yours. I wish you the very best in the New Year!! :-)
