Sir, your advice is the absolute best. I live a half mile from the Just In Time Bowling Alley mass shooting in Lewiston Maine. I sat in my kitchen in lockdown with nobody knowing where the shooter was, could be in my shed, a neighbor's shed, could have been anywhere. I sat with two "assault Rifles" ( i know, a made up term), an AK-47 and a Mini-14 with several loaded 30 round magazines sitting in the dark as to not be a night time target through my windows. It was a crazy night ... the police would not be coming, they were running around checking every 911 call about an open shed door or a "suspicious guy in a hoodie" that was just the town drunk everyone knows. Stay armed the entire time and be ready, fortunately we have the luxury of training every weekend outdoors. I felt safe because I had the tools I need and the training as well.

Your comment shows some great insight for the average citizen when dealing with a high stress event. Mentally preparing by practicing stress inoculation, and practicing stronger situational awareness and discernment will definitely help people to act more decisively in their own home. Then maybe there would be fewer frivolous calls made to 911, and law enforcement/fire/EMTs could focus more on the actual threats and emergencies.

Glad things worked out without any violence. Some people do not understand why I do not trust anyone to come to my rescue. They are foolish to think help will always be there and not take any initiative to learn to protect themselves. They can laugh at me however which one of us is prepared and ready to be their own defender.

I don't know if you heard about this yet, but he thinks very highly of you, and really appreciates the genuine and down-to-earth nature of your content. He mentioned you in his interview with @GarandThumb, brother! That was so awesome to see! You have made an impact on someone who has made a massive impact on the 2A community. Sharing your experiences here furthers that impact, and undoubtedly for the good, on all of us. You didn't just teach us about practicing strong awareness and tactical discernment, but you also taught us about exercising better moral discernment. I have no doubt that those kids learned a far more valuable lesson from your handling of that situation then they would have from spending time on the inside of a jail cell. Well done. 🫡 Shalom.

Another important thing to keep in mind is when things happen they happen when you don't expect it and whatever tools and skills you have in that moment is all you are going to have. Whether it is a split second self defense situation or a nuclear war, whatever preparations you have made up until that moment happens is all you are going to have and that is it. There are no do-overs and you won't have time to then suddenly prepare in that moment it will be too late so that's why we have to prepare for all scenarios as best as possible while we can.

We have a 6 foot raised deck so I thought someone climbed on the roof to break in. I go out the front, sneak around the side and come around thr back with a gun and flash light and find guy on the roof. A similar thing happened to us a few years ago. We were home and dogs woke us up around 2 AM. I got dressed and grabbed pistol and told wife to call 911. I went out back and there were 6-10 teens messing around my shop where all my tool are. I turned on lights and yelled, they took off running into my pasture and woods. I grabbed a spotlight and had them rounded up by the time the cops got there. Found out they were down the road at an abandoned house on a call when my wife called. The kids were having a party and when the cops showed up, some of them ran to my place. They were all cut up and bleeding from barbed wire and briars. The deputies chewed them out and pointed at me and said "see that man right there? He could have shot you all and been in his right to do it." After we found out they were underage and drinking, we did the same as you and got them rides home. Scares me what could have happened, both with the kids and if the deputies had reacted different to me being armed.

I triggered a motion activated silent alarm one morning on my home security system at 5:30am. Took 12 minutes for officers to arrive. At the time i lived in a densely populated builder community. I was swapping out my work gear in my truck in the driveway on a densly foggy morning and all of a sudden i get lit up with a spotlight, I climb backwards out of my truck and put my hands up theres 2 officers approaching me asking me if i was the property owner. I said yes i am they said do you have ID i said yes its in my right pocket, may i grab it? They tell me I triggered a silent alarm, I didn't even know my system had that. Needless to say it took 12 minutes in a residential area for a response. Anyway good response to your situation. I think you did the proper handling of the situation. It is easy to nitpick and say things like "if you called the police and told your wife not to answer the door that could lead to problems" but in the middle of the night with a sick little kid decision making isn't the best! 😂 This is why having family emergency plans and training on them is so important. And 14 years ago cameras that could see anything at night were more expensive. Today we have the luxury of being able to see if our problem is dumb teens having a bonfire or something more nefarious. Glad you were safe in the end!

I just got solar + battery powered security cameras just gotta figure out how to hook them up. I’m severely computer illiterate unfortunately lol. I believe a good dog is a huge component to security. We have a pit bull whippet (whippet is miniature grey hound which is a breed I had never heard of.) mix, she’s fast & she’s stout @ about 80lb. She literally just protected me from a vicious dog last week. I had my cc but I live in city limits & I’d go to jail Ben if the vicious dog was eating my 12yr old son. That dog couldn’t move fast enough trying to get away from my girl Samantha. U treat a dog like family & they’ll protect u like family, I trained her but I’m not professional. If u can have a dog big enough to help protect the family get one. They can give a person those crucial seconds they needed between a criminal trying to get to u or a loved one. Plus it helps when u leave knowing u have man’s best friend guarding your home.

That is a huge dog considering the mix of breeds. Those whippets can absolutely fly!! I agree 100%! I am a huge dog lover and we treat them like family. There is no way to ever know or gather any data on this but I believe there is a huge number of criminals that had a target picked out but their plans got derailed by a dog that nobody knew about, nor was it ever reported. They call them man's best friend for so many reasons. My German Sheppherd Bullit died and he was my best friend. We have 3 dogs now and one of them is a year old German Shepherd. I featured him in a video a while back he just turned a year old in February. I appreciate you watching, sharing your story, and thankful that you all were ok, God bless you and yours :-)

Toronto police chief (not the brightness star in Canada) is telling resident's to place their car keys in a bag outside their door. His reason? Most criminals are breaking into houses to find the keys. That is likely a patently false or at least over simplified explanation but also highlights were western governments are at. Not only are you not safe but they also believe you don't have a right to protect yourself and they don't have a responsibility to support and promote your safety. They don't even believe you have a right to feel safe. The writers of the constitution understood this. The academics of the late 1700s and through the 1800s understood this. However, with the success and relative peace in the USA after WW2 the people have forgot reality. We the People have signed away our responsibilities to bureaucrats and elitist whom corrupt the systems and the politicians.

Funny you mention that. My mother in law just mentioned to my wife about those being found in people after they died. I know you’re asking for eye witness testimony here asking Steve but their is definitely something to this

No but, I retired after 20 years in the industry. I still keep my license up but I rarely do anything unless I cover for someone on vacation or something like that. I have not heard anyone in the industry mention anything about it though. If I hear something I will try to keep you posted.

I would have been concerned too. But this turned out to be just another case where simple human stupidity only looked like malicious intent. If we could all be just as restrained as you were, we wouldn't have to deal with horror stories like the man who shot the teenage girl who was just trying to turn her car around in his driveway

So just like the old scenario if it would have been an issue or seconds would have counted the police are only minutes away, if I would have pulled up to a scenario like that I think I would be a little concerned how about the possibility of those seconds
