39 Flights | 1 Month Flying with Captain Lisa

Your Path - Become An Airline Pilot Today: uafly.co/3mWnOpB ... As airline pilots, we're usually thrown into small metal tubes for weeks on end with people we've never met. That's one thing that makes this career unique and challenging. But this time, I got to fly an entire month in a row (39 flights!) with my friend Lisa. When you're an airline pilot, your life is a balance of 3 main forces: quality of life, quality of job, and quality of pay. In this video, you'll get the chance to glimpse inside one month's schedule to see the pros and cons of how each force balanced my flying schedule.
My career started by flying for Mokulele Airlines and so did Lisa's... Talk about a small world! After a few years working as a school teacher, Lisa decided she needed a new challenge and became a flight attendant for United Airlines. She was then convinced by a few pilots on one of her flights to give flight training a shot. After getting a Master's Degree in a completely unrelated career field, then becoming a flight attendant, Lisa made yet another career change at 30 years old and is now an airline captain! Lisa is the perfect example that there's no better time to follow your dreams.
THANK YOU, Lisa, and all of our amazing flight attendants for making this month one of my favorite memories as a pilot. I'll always remember that this month at work hardly felt like work at all.

Being a pilot is a balance of quality of life, quality of job, and quality of pay. If you pull on one, the others shrink. Not every month can work out this well... But I'm so glad I experienced with AMAZING crews. What else do you want to learn about being an airline pilot?

Been wanting to be a pilot since the 6th grade. Reading this is inspiring. What airport are you out of if you don't mind me asking ?

It’s the greatest job in the world. Don’t let anyone ever tell you any different. My career lasted for over 40 years, and my last flight was just as much fun as my first. I’m reading through the comments and I see a lot of people saying, “I always dreamed of being a pilot”. Go for it! It’s not an easy road, but once you’re there you’ll never regret it. I wouldn’t trade a nanosecond of my career for all the tea in China. Best of luck, and never give up.

I'm 39. Only a few hours from my private checkride. I was just approved for a loan for a 141 school. I tell people I'm still considering my decision, but in my heart I know I'm going to take the leap of faith. I could never live with myself if I allowed fear and security of a miserable, well paying job to get in the way of my dream. I logged my first 15 flight hours 9 years ago. In a matter of a few months I soloed, found a house, quit flying to help pay for it, and was expecting our 3rd child. I thought I would never fly again before retirement. 9 months ago I was getting depressed thinking I would forever be a skilled laborer/underachiever. That's when I decided I was going figure out a way to afford training and wouldn't take no for an answer. Before I knew it, I was securing regular weekend handyman work and had logged another 60 hours into my training. My point to all of this is, don't ever give up on the dream. If you really want it; you can obtain it.

Never go with a 141 school, you will pay 10 times more. Go to your local 91 outfit and find a CFI you like and trust. (Study and be prepared for your lessons and you’ll knock out your ratings.) Although not as shiny as a 141 school, you will pay WAY less and learn the exact same stuff at your local flight school. I personally know many pilots who are still paying off their $100k+ loan for ATP or other 141 schools whose slick salesmanship suck you into their programs.

After driving a tow truck for 14 1/2 years, I started flight training. I'm 37 now and I'm getting ready to take my CPLSE checkride in the next week or two. I'll probably be approaching 40 by the time I get to the regionals. I hated driving a tow truck but took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. I'm attending AeroGuard in Phoenix, AZ and working on my Bachelor's of Science in Aeronautics at Embry Riddle.

You’re truly an inspiration, Lisa - not only to women who dream of being a commercial airline pilot, but to anyone who holds themselves back from new challenges or believes “it’s too late” to become what you always dreamed of being. At age 37 you’ve figured out so much about yourself, embraced new journeys, and pursued entirely different career paths literally from Step 1 - never once giving in to self-doubt or questioning the wisdom of your choice. You went exactly where your heart led you… something all of us should do in our lives. Well done!

Swayne, you're a natural at commentary. you started a psuedo contest here with "never too late". I began my 121 career as an FO at age 54. if there's anyone out there that claims they're too old, that's rubbish! i like your balance triad however, by us CHOOSING to be pilots, we naturally accept a different quality of life than the average folk. While we go to work, it's not a JOB. Consider the whole enchilada when it comes to pay, and not just the greenbacks. keep having fun and tapeing your stories.

That was exactly what I needed, thanks Swayne! After my application to the European Flight Academy was put on hold due to the pandemic, I lost pretty much all hope that I could become a pilot in any reasonable timeframe. Hearing Lisa switching careers at 30 makes me incredibly happy and while I still have a long way to go (currently only at ~20 hours since my PPL), this finally gave me the motivation to drive out to the airport again and look around the country in the trusty Cessna of my flight school to build more flight time and reach out to the EFA to see if there are any updates on when they are opening up again. Your videos have always been a big source of motivation for me and I am extremely grateful for that!

Such an inspiring story, just recently i shared cockpit with a female captain that started as gate agent and moved all the way up to line training captain passing through flight attendant, cabin chief, first officer and then captain, all within the same airline. A lot of good career stories out there!

Unbelievable, I googled cessna landing when I got Flight Sim 5 years ago, I was not even pilot-interested back then, just google tutorial to land my plane in the game. I saw you. I cant believe this, 5 years later youtube recommended your video, I literally dropped my jaws and I am very happy for your journey. YOU MADEEE ITT. Seeing your video has given me so much joy because last year, in the deepest point, where everything was stopped due to COVID, I decided to change my career, working full time and finance my study at the same time. I am at near end of PPL, CPL next year hopefully. This has been my greatest and gambling decision so far, considering the world situation right now. I was full of self doubt, sleepless nights thinking if it is even worth it after all. But I believe my choice now. Dude I wish nothing but the best for you, you inspired me alot.

Wonderful awesome video Swayne! That is just so neat how your schedule worked out! So I saw you had a 4 hour layover in KMLI. Not far from my home! I have flown out of Moline several years back on Northwest Airlink. What a great experience that was! I'm sure it would have been nice to have Sam in the Bahamas as well! But flying with a friend for the whole month cycle obviously was great as you expressed. Have an awesome weekend! Mark in Iowa.

That only happens when the pilot is low in seniority. Once we've been at the job a while, we have lots of time off. When flying wide-body aircraft on international routes, it almost feels like a part-time job. Like Swayne mentioned in the video, a pilot can make more money by flying more, but that means more time away. We either choose more pay, or better quality of life.
