Your Big Decision: Commuting vs. Living In-Base For Airline Pilots
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Cockpit scenes filmed with approval, in partnership with Envoy Air Inc., under Part 91... Regardless of which airline you'd love to fly for one day, you'll be faced with the decision of whether to commute or live in-base as an airline pilot. When you commute, you can live almost anywhere in the world, but have to allow yourself enough time and flight options to make it to your crew base before the start of your trip. Living in-base is ideal for most pilots but can result in extremely high living costs in large cities across the country. Here are some of the pros and cons you should know to make the most informed decision possible.

Good video. Glad to see Envoy being supportive. Commuting sucks, but sometimes it's a necessary evil. You did a good job laying out some of the pros and cons. I'm a commuter too, but my advice is to others is to live in base if you can. It's a totally different job when you can drive to work.

Yay! You’re back! The footage was awesome along with your narration!
Very nice video; I've never seen your stuff before, but your content is very high quality. I'm a current Airbus Captain and have been at my airline 28 years, 18 of them commuting. Commuting is a complete and total grind and doesn't get better as you get older (though hopefully your trips will). There's reasons to do it (mine involved taking care of my Mom) and sometimes it's just the price of doing business, but I am so happy to drive to work now. BTW I am very impressed with the Envoy commuting arrangements, particularly the hotels. That's huge and pretty uncommon, certainly among the majors. I wish you the best and hope you have a great career! Fly safe!
Such a well-planned and professionally executed video. You're a true pro. Thank you for all of your time and effort: I learn a lot from each post and enjoy each and every one!
I have been a commuter for most of my career. One of the considerations to keep in mind when deciding to move to base is the stability of the base. I have seen bases upsize and downsize, or even close completely. I have friends with Delta who moved to the Cincinnati area many years ago when it was a major hub, only to later be kicked out of the base when it downsized significantly. There are many Delta pilots who lived in the DFW area who either had to move or became commuters when Delta's major DFW hub was shut down. There are a few places where you can be relatively secure, ORD for United for example. But as unstable as mainline bases are, regional bases can be even worse. I have a friend from my first airline who had five bases close on hime at our first airline. We used to joke that he should bid for the small base where our company had its HQ because they would never close that, they had been there for decades. So ultimately he and his wife made the decision to move there. Four months after they moved, the company closed the base and decided to move the company HQ to another state.
Another excellent video about what it's like being an airline pilot. Thanks for the professional video and your broadcasting is spot on !!!

Great video, man! It was short and very informative. Also brought back some memories as I was on the 145 with Eagle in ORD for a few months. Glad to see Envoy is much better than it use to be. Keep them coming man.
I love your videos keep them coming! You’re my motivation to become a pilot
You're truly a wealth-of-knowledge! Thank you for sharing the details.
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for posting and providing such detailed explanations of what life as a young pilot is like!
Great job, Swayne! Your videos address a lot of questions that future airline pilots will have. Flight school can’t provide all the preparation needed to understand what it will be like to hold that first job!
Stay safe on those winter commutes! Luckily spring is right around the corner :) Thanks for the video, as always!!
You are one of the reasons I want to fly for airlines, very good video
That shot flying over Chicago toward Lake Michigan was sweet! Also the shot at the end after departure from the airport.
Your videos really are an inspiration. Thanks for going through the effort you do to share with us
Thanks Swayne. Everything I needed to know you are covering

Swayne love the transition into true 121 Airline flying! These videos are so cool at detailing the ins and outs of airline life. As a pretty new flight attendant a lot of this is so relatable! Have you ever thought about expanding the channel to include a perspective of the same topics (IOE, Seniority, Base, CQ/Recurrent, etc) from Flight Attendants either at Envoy or elsewhere? I know a lot of FAs who watch your videos would love that!
Thank you for the video! Just subscribed. It's awesome to see how pilots live their life. Especially for people like me who wish to be a pilot but took another career path. Thank you again.
I always enjoy your videos man so informative

Love you’re videos! Packed with great information. Wish I had not chickened out on going to flight school ATP. At the time the $$$ scared me off. Now life has happened. I will eventually get my private. In the meantime I’ll watch you’re success!

Great video man! Thanks for keeping things real and showing how things really are. I see all these fake ass people on Instagram showing their "perfect" life or career and portraying false realities. The truth is that we know that all careers have their awesome, and not so awesome things. Coming from a family of pilots I know how rewarding/great flying can be, and also the not so great things, so good job, these videos really help future aviators, keep it up!
Always enjoy it. Good work.
Hey Swayne, first, I enjoy these quality videos you put out. Great job. Next, I have 2 ideas for future videos. 1) A highlight and low light reel of the career. A simple things you love, and things you don’t enjoy. 2) What brought YOU into the profession. I bet I speak for a fair amount that we’d like to hear you story about your entry into the world of aviation and your journey thus far. Keep it up
As an Envoy Flight Attendant, I love you videos.

It's a crazy life which requires young people with stamina lol! You are doing all young pilots a great service in making them decide if airline flying is for them.
Love the videos Mate, I’m a private pilot getting my instrument rating and commercial atm. Great insight into the choices Ahead. Thank you!
Thanks, Swayne. I hope you don't have to taxi as much as I've had to the last few times I've been through O'Hare!
I lived in Grand Forks for three years...surprisingly don’t miss it.

I don't know how you all do it commuting every week but I couldn't do it myself. Great video!
great job ..I really appricate all the info ...
That's some good advice, thank you..
Thanks for sharing 🙏 sure is different driving up north than beautiful Hawaii 👍🤠

Add to the perfect commute: staying in the same timezone.
Swayne, I am just starting my airline career a little late at 55, but its been a dream, please upload any video that can help us new guys. Envoy should use you as a great spokesperson for them. Well done!!
A very timely video for me, Swayne! (And very well done!) I’m trying to make the difficult choice now to commute or not (and hence, upgrade or not). I’ve commuted at several times over the span of my career, and hated it, but this would be fairly short term.
@SwayneMartinPilot
5 жыл бұрын
Short term commutes aren't so bad. I've seen it wear on people over years of commuting. For most people, it's a good idea to avoid it!
Great video, commuting is really frowned upon these days especially after Buffalo. The FAA should introduce FTL limits for commuters with this in mind e.g. crews can only commute if the duty is achievable if they were rostered by the Airline and rest periods again the same.
Glad to see that you upgraded your car. That VW Golf was some type of LEVEL

Well done presentation Swayne. SMF-LAX commuter, save me a seat! Jb
It is a personal choice for sure. My wife is and FA and has a crashpad in her base. Commuting from our house to the airport and then to her base would be complicated so the crashpad helps. She does commute to other airports when she has picked up additional flights but she does have to go the day before or after depending on what they are.
Many years ago, I had a really bad experience flying with A'A and never traveled or allowed any of the foreign dignitaries that I advise to travel via A'A, but because of such AWESOME videos, the fact that Envoy allows this form of instructional/ entertaining videos, and music (where do you get it?) I will give A'A one more go and let you guys know how it went. Great public relations strategy!! I am also dying to get on the Cessna Caravan with Mokulele Airlines.... I hope that I can get my pilot license FINALLY this year.....
