You mention the plastic steering wheel in both vehicles, I purchased a Trail Boss Custom last year. The plastic steering wheel was a huge issue for me. It is after all the only part of the truck you are constantly touching with your hands, but it had everything else I needed and nothing I didn’t. I bought a very nice sew on leather wheel cover and spent an hour installing it. It feels and looks like the factory steering wheel and cost me $15 vs $15,000 for the LT. I will be trading trucks again in a year and will likely get the same thing. I spend about 20 hours a week in that truck and have 400 engine hours in 27 weeks. I absolutely love it. And the $15 steering wheel cover is by far the best upgrade I made.

Great demo of ATRAC! And the nice part is that because it's software you can keep it on all the time, vs a locker that you typically turn on/off as needed. For our Colorado trails I pretty much turn ATRAC on and leave it on when I get on the trail. You might not want to do this in more sandy / muddy environments. Newer 4Runners added MTS -- multi-terrain select -- which is basically configurable ATRAC. So you can configure it for more or less wheel spin based on your terrain (mud vs rocks).

@@poweredbyrice5708 it didn't actually cost millions to implement ABS-based traction control. Modern vehicles already use 4-channel ABS for slip when you're braking, so it wasn't much work to program the computer to also use the ABS when crawling. I wheel often with double-locked vehicles here in Colorado, the main improvement over ABS-based traction control is that the locked vehicles tend to crawl more smoothly. There's no slip, brake, grab jerkiness. FYI Jeep added this functionality as "brake lock differential" 8-9 years ago. It's a good budget way to add the rough functionality of lockers to lower optioned vehicles that don't have lockers.

I live in Michigan and I remember driving a 2wd pickup with no weight in the bed, and just winter tires in the back, and still made it to work everyday. I currently have a 2015 GMC Sierra crew cab Z71 only because resale value in Michigan on a truck is $2000 more over a 2wd. I had a 2003 4x4 ext cab 8' bed chevy, drove home in a non plowed road with 5" of snow. Made it half way home in 2wd posi. Thought at the halfway point, hey, you have 4wd. And yet I made it that far with only 2wd. So, I continued in only 2wd.

I like the manual windows on the Wrangler, the wheels on the Bronco and the white top on the FJ Cruiser. Between 1987 and 2007, my wife and I went on hundreds of camping and picnic trips using 4-cylinder 4WD vehicles on 4WD roads in Utah and surrounding states. None of our vehicles had ANY traction aids - limited slip, lockers, TracLoc or anything similar - so we learned how to pick a line that would keep three or four tires on the ground, even where most people would swear no such line existed. Right now we’re driving a 4WD pickup and an AWD car. Last time I looked, the base price for the least expensive Wrangler was $33,436 Wrangler Sport 2-door. My fantasy vehicle for my own use is the 2023 Wrangler Sport 2-door with: 495 optional exterior color Sarge Green 675 hinge gate reinforcement 875 heavy-duty rock slider with step assist 1,895 3-piece hard top 00 Heritage Tan seats 170 all-weather floor mats 40 grab handle kit 195 Trail-Rated kit 1,195 trailer tow and heavy-duty electrical group 00 manual transmission 795 Anti-Spin rear differential 525 cold air intake $39,850 TOTAL If I could afford to buy a 4WD vehicle for my wife too, it would most likely be that same vehicle (but in Firecracker Red) OR That same vehicle with the turbo 4 and an automatic transmission OR A Wrangler Sport 4-door with the same equipment as on the first Wrangler above $41,570 TOTAL OR A Wrangler Sport 4-door with that same equipment plus the turbo 4 and an automatic $41,570 TOTAL

I really enjoy the TFL comparisons of what are essentially very basic models (by modern standards) of smaller 4x4s. Tommy, Andre, and David are excellent hosts/presenters for these types of videos -- never overdone and always very informative. Of the 3 vehicles in this comparo, I would pick Tommy's Jeep. The FJ is just way too difficult to see ought from, which is an absolute deal killer for me driving off road in "tree infested" northern Michigan. The Bronco is a Ford - err, I mean it's rather "unproven" insofar as reliability is concerned and I don't like the soft top. The Jeep just simply does what it needs to do, is proven, is way easier to see out from, and is way more confidence inspiring IMO. The only thing that I would change in Tommy's rig would be to add an automatic along with Jeep's newer additional AWD setting (for my wife to use is winter street driving), which unfortunately may price the darn thing up to $40K MSRP for a new one (not sure if Jeep will even build a Willy's 2dr Sport w/ auto trans and additional AWD selector).

Everything will have its pro and cons, but they all performed equally ... pretty cool adding the FJ. People have to just figure out if they are Jeep or Bronco ... or FJ people. Which is attractive to you. And then that's also the fun part... modding. Adjusting things (parts) to fix those little inconsistencies. Also with regards to the head Bob, or getting thrashed around a bit ... isn't that really part of why we dig wheeling? Isn't that part of the allure.
