My 94 yo mom in law cooked them “to death”. Almost black & the best. She used old pressure cookers & beat up aluminum pans. Made the best Chocolate Pound Cake & Strawberry Cobbler ever. She would be 106 now. Picked cotton for neighbors, made butter, never had A/C. Never moved from her home place. Whole ‘nother world. Days gone by. Georgia

For the information of all those naysayers Southerners, my mother always cooked her vegetables with a little sugar which enhance the flavor of everything immensely.
I’ve made these several times. Always the star of the potluck. People always wind up talking about “those green beans, who made that!?” I cut the sugar down just a little but follow everything else. Yes you can hear the popping when cooled down correctly.

My granny put sugar in her green beans too. I love them that way & so does my family😊
My mother added sugar to nearly all her vegetables especially corn because it made them taste like they were fresh out of the garden. She also froze okra by picking it, putting it in freezer bags without cutting or even washing it. She would freeze and then that winter she would wash it in warm water, cut it , roll it in corn meal and fry it. It tasted like it was fresh from the garden, too.

I’m telling y’all, for anyone who likes country style green beans, you need to try this method at least once. They are some of the best green beans you will ever eat. They taste like they’ve been cooked with country bacon or something. But you have to follow her directions and cook them exactly like she says. They are absolutely delicious!
I remember when my grandma use to do green beans she would also put a dash of vinegar in it ...HHMMMM sounds really good about now LOL

Great to hear!
I tried them and my husband & I enjoyed them. He prefers to remove the juice and add water instead as a healthier alternative to the juice.
Tammy - I had to watch how you made these beans, because I make mine very much the same way. It is almost the same recipe, except I also add a pat or two of butter, and mix cooked bacon pieces into them when they're thru cooking. I even mash mine, but with fork. and yes - they are, like yours, delicious! Every good cook adds about a tablespoon of sugar the water of boiled corn on the cob, skillet fried squash (not battered), and even to spaghetti sauce. Sugar brings out the flavor of so many foods. I love your recipes.
