3 Exercises for Tech Neck Pain

Today's video covers exercises for tech neck pain, which is associated with the neck posture that occurs when people look down at their device (tablet, phone or computer) for long periods. The exercises is this video are designed to counteract the positional stresses associated with the tech neck posture and reduce pain.
Tech neck is also called forward head posture in the phyical therapy world and describes a position where the head translates forward on the trunk creating extension of the upper neck and flexion of the lower neck.
Forward head is not really a concern in of itself (although many on social media would lead you to believe otherwise) as the mechanical stress associated with this position is very manageable for the structures of the cervical spine. However, when the neck in held in this position for long periods, some people can develop a bit of sensitivity.
My new book has comprehensive neck pain and headache programs, which can help with this issue. Click the following Amazon link to learn more. a.co/d/4gKejIR

Thank you very much, very useful to practice in daily life. At least the first position that we can do all the time Just being mindful and remembering it and adjusting your position immediately should be good.❤

Thanks for not only providing rehab exercises but most importantly the why and how muscles are worked. I have always thought the first and second exercises were for mainly the deep neck flexors but now understand it's for the lower Neck Extensors as opposed to the upper Neck Extensors. I've been doing Neck Extension instead targeting wrong part of my neck (upper Extensors) thanks a lot. Plus this is aiding my TMJ rehab!

Regarding the isolated neck flex - if their head/neck is in a lot of ext in supine do you bolster to neutral?

I would have them lift until they hit neutral. We don’t usually bolster with that exercise.

Hi Sir is cervical Stenosis the same as a pinched nerve?

  • @RehabScience

Cervical stenosis involves a narrowing of the hole that the nerve travels through, so it is the primary cause of a pinched nerve. So, yes, they are basically the same thing. However, in most cases, the nerve isn’t actually pinched. It’s just irritated.

Yesterday I really strained a lot of muscles because i was in a situation where i had to help a full grown man up off the floor. He is disabled and fell on his back in a small bathroom. I attempted at least 5 times to pick him up. He could not offer any assistance. I tried from in front and behind. There was no one around to help me. I somehow managed to get him up, but i was hurting. I am only 5 ft. 1 and 122 lbs. I tried to do my stretches and exercises this morning but i was feeling pain. Hopefully tomorrow i will be better. Maybe i will use my heating pad.
