3 Days Tramping in Kaimanawa Forest Park: Boyd - Tussock Huts Loop
Three perfect days tramping in Kaimanawa (and Kaweka) Forest Parks. From Oamaru Hut I head up the valley for a night under the tarp, then continue on to the Ngaruroro River valley, Boyd Hut and Tussock Hut in Kaweka Forest Park. To finish the loop I head off track over the Otorehinaiti Saddle, staying at the biv there.

Excellent. Geoff Mead and I passed through this area in August 1975 - I still have a few pics from that trip. Tussock Hut was always one of the memories that stuck for me, so I really appreciate seeing it live like this again. Cheers!

Love your videos but could you please show us what you are cooking/eating too. We keep planning walks and need ideas for food too.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your comment and feedback. I agree I should show a bit more of the food, I just usually eat very basic so don't find it very exciting! Breakfast is usually cold soaked oats and milk powder, lunch is PB and crackers, snacks are nuts and nut bars, and dinner is instant mash with some dehy veg and seasoning, with PB for dessert and maybe chocolate or a hot drink. My next upcoming video shows a bit more cooking with a new dish I'm trialling. Cheers
Bloody awesome bro. Looks like super cool country and the weather looked mint aswell. New go pro? Smashing the meal mates and peanut butter 👊 Ya TA shoes look like they might be on their last legs, although probably nothing a little dental floss can't fix.

Thanks heaps bro. New GoPro, would you believe I finally upgraded! Haha when I took that shot I was thinking "yeah nah, they're so done" the mesh is beyond dental flossing now. Reluctantly grabbed my other shoes for my next trip. I saw you've got some nice new ones too. Cheers bro

@@ReviloNZwalks choice man. The footage looked great and the stabilization is really nice. They lasted you well. Yeah my other topos were falling apart, I destroyed them on a 11km mud run haha

@@BackcountryKiwi Cheers man, definitely making the most of that stabilisation now. I thought it might satisfy against upgrading the main camera, but nah I still want your M50 haha. Yeah booy that's beast
Thanks for showing the terrain & Tussock Hut, Manson is the furthest West I’ve ever gone from Kawekas. Looks like a nice area 👏

Thanks TJ! I'm hoping to lean towards that feeling so glad you thought so!
Are you a professional photographer? You should be; start a business. Your choices of color, videos, contrasts of dark and light, etc., are fantastic. Do you ever make stills of your videos for sale? I especially like the one with the one about to drop into the crater!

Thank you so much, but no, far from it! I still use a very basic camera too. But really appreciate your enjoyment of my shots. That was an epic scene for sure. I wish I had my tripod for that shot. Thanks again for watching!
Great footage on the trip as per usual. I must get into the Tussock hut one of these days… been into the Mangataramea private block a few times just over the river. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for watching Steve. The whole area is such vast country. I love just looking at all its remote corners on the topo maps and wonder how lucky those private owners feel to explore it. Cheers

Cool little trip, what was it like dropping off Otore saddle down to the Oamaru river?
@ReviloNZwalks
Жыл бұрын
Cheers for watching. At the start of the descent you can just sidle above the watercourses to make use of more open ground. The valley tightens towards the end and it turns into regular crossings and stream travel. But it was pretty easy going I thought, and at least nav is easy following water downhill

Hey cheers! Good point, nah I didn't. Passed a few anglers at Oamaru on the way in though, and they seem to do alright there aye
Sorry, the MOON about to drop into the crater!
I love your videos but spend too much time finding them. KZread gives me Revlon makeup, which I don't want. Maybe an easier name?

Any chance of getting some prints from you (i.e., the moon...)? Not very cost effective to mail them to the U.S.A., huh?

Hi, I’m planning a fishing trip early next year and my plan is to get choppered into Boyd and walk out spending 2 nights in Boyd and 2 nights at Oamaru Huts. Anything I should know if I’m doing it on my own, or is it pretty straight forward? Thanks!

Hey cheers for watching. Sounds like a great trip. Overall the route out is pretty easy and I don't think you'll have any trouble. The Ngaruroro river and Ruatea stream are your main river crossings which like anything will be best during a good weather window. Let me know if you've got any other questions. Cheers

@@ReviloNZwalksThanks! I’m clearly a newbie to the hut system in NZ….so this is a rookie question. Do they have electricity? Any sort of hot plate or anything to boil water? And do you remember getting any phone reception at all in either huts? I’m assuming no to all three except for the fireplace used as a cooking source :) Thanks!
@ReviloNZwalks

@@MrLou948 No worries. Haha it would be a no to all three. Some flash huts do have more facilities but not the majority, including Kaimanawa huts. I wouldn't rely on hut fires to cook on either. They're nice for heating when firewood is around and most huts have some old pots and pans, but best to be self sufficient with a small gas cooker and lightweight pot. Even if planning on staying in huts, I always carry shelter/camping gear so I know I'll be ok if something goes wrong. Also recommend hiring a PLB if you don't have one. Cheers!

@@ReviloNZwalksThanks! Yes, that is my plan for sure. Was planning on bringing a small gas canister for cooking as I’m hoping a fire won’t be necessary in the summer…best not to light one if not needed :) Thanks again!

@@MrLou948 Awesome. I'm sure you'll be good to go by then. Oamaru is a very easy overnighter from Poronui if you want to do a recon trip between now and then. Very popular with anglers - on one of my last visits some shared a fresh catch cooked over the embers with me, on the deck at sunset. An awesome memory
