Ming china: "who needs a shield when you have a million soldier"
@foojer

Partly stylistic, partly me being lazy, partly going with a theme. I was going for standard Chinese line infantry, which seems to have been some kind of armoured spearman without a shield. Specialists like swordsmen and pavise bearers definitely used shields, and there do seem to have been *some* hoplite-type spear-and-shield soldiers, but it seems to me that the majority of close combat soldiers were guys like these. I could be wrong, but the evidence I’ve seen points to this

Great vid, not sure about other cultures, but the Chinese one you got some little mistakes. Ge and Ji were the most popular infantry main weapon until Three Kingdom era, while spears was more likely to be used along with a large shield. The lower part of the heavy helmet you draw for Qin was supposed to be tied together when wearing. The legging you draw for Tang was the one used since Eastern Zhou, and by the time of Tang, they already started to wear boots due to a strong northern nomadic influence during the Northern & Southern Dynasties period. As for the gear of Tang warrior, you may want to use this keyword "唐代 武士俑"(means warrior status of Tang Dynasty) on google to get some idea. Hope it helps. Besides, really enjoy the art style, cheers!

I like how the Merovingian transitions into templar, the accuracy is on point since templars were originally Frankish!
@silverpleb2128
2 жыл бұрын
The templars were originated from france and french, not fankish. The kingdom of franks name had nothing to do with the culture of the kingdom. Its elites took the population culture pretty quickly and they integrated themself, with of courses somes changes over time. But the germanic frankish culture was pretty quickly mixed with the local gallo-roman population and pretty quickly changed into early french culture. That was already happening during the 8-9-10 centuries.

I've gone with a running theme with all five groups, sword for Gallia, axe for Iranians, and simple spears for the rest. You're right, there were a lot of weapons i didn't show, but i wanted to keep it consistent (maybe except for the musket for the Janissary at the very end). I feel like you're short selling the spear though, it did basically stay the same shape from before the beginning of history till about 300 or so years ago, when guns started to make them obsolete
@user-bn5gr3ck9i

thanks for your reply. I agree with that spear(矛) is a basic weapon in many countries for many years.But in ancient China,dagger-axe(戈) is more common.and its shape is changed a lot during thousands years.let me tell you some chinese characters or kanji,you will know how important dagger-axe is in east Asia culture. A chariot with a dagger-axe means war or fight.(戦) A standing man with a dagger-axe means guard.(戍) A running man with a dagger-axe means fight or cut down .(伐) May your channel be better in the future.

Why do the Chinese not use shields
@foojer
4 жыл бұрын
Here's something i wrote for another video: I have notably omitted shields from these drawings, mostly just a personal stylistic quirk. On one hand there are numerous examples of Chinese shields surviving, but on the other hand there doesn't seem to have been a 'standard' style of armament regarding hand weapons and shields the way that existed say in the classical Greco-Roman armies - the Terracotta Army doesn't really suggest shielded troopers, while many Han sculptures show troopers with shields. I'll just go with the line that there were plenty of shielded and un-shielded spearmen serving in Chinese armies down the ages.
