    I liked when he said don't let your age, body shape or gender deter you from skating. And in my mind I just said "check, check, aaaand check". I'm 5 weeks into skating as a chunky 36 year old (37 tomorrow) mom and I just have so much fun. I'm such an anomaly at the skate park that everyone pretty much just let's me go. I try my best to follow flow in the most skilled newbie fashion I can, and not to abuse the advantage. Such a blast.

    There's one thing I'm missing from the absolute fundamentals, that is: have your legs ever so slightly bend when you are on your board!!! You will be more connected with the board, less prone to falling and generally just better balanced! This is pretty much the number one difference to how an intermediate skater stands on his board, versus a beginner with stretched legs that could pretty much slam that way just riding over a crack. (Also, don't ever put your legs too close to each other, have them apart properly).

    Agree with everything except #8. While progression is going to happen on smoother concrete like you find at the skateparks, sometimes just getting comfortable with tricks is going to happen on rougher concrete. It's the same theory as learning on carpet. More grab and less chance of the board flying out on you. Rough concrete, yes. Pebble strewn concrete, No.

  • @Leachima
    @Leachima2 жыл бұрын

    everything is so true ( as a newbie I can relate). the most diffcult point is really the fear. as an older skater it's maybe a bigger problem. if you feel fear and then do it + fall, it gets even worse. I'm really struggling with this but skateboarding is still much fun☺️ maybe a little point to add: avoid frustration when your progress slows down and you see little 15year old kids around you doing insane stuff you only can dream of and you wish you would have started 20years ago🤣. oh and wear shin-ankle protectors (the ones soccer player use) so so useful!

    Awesome vid! Wondered if you give me a tip on commiting the back foot during flat tricks? Getting the board movement down, just finding it hard not to plant my back foot Edit: Just watched your '1 hack' vid and it looks like you've answered me 😅 gonna try jumping on the board after dropping it 🤘

  • @NeverStopImprovingSB

    @NeverStopImprovingSB

    Yessir! That is my best recommendation on that topic for sure, you just have to find some way to get your back foot to understand that feeling of landing ON the board, and then from there on out, it'll stay on there naturally. Nice work figuring that out on your own by the way 👌

    Mainly I was just trying to say that if you skate on a rough surface or a spot with little rocks and stuff all over it, whenever you're trying to practice riding, the wheels will get stopped by the cracks/pebbles and it'll make you fall, whereas if you had a smoother piece of concrete, you could focus on balancing and riding without that problem

    Triple Eight and Protec are the two top brands of skateboarding helmets that everyone uses. As far as pads go, you want to steer clear of the cheap toy versions and get some that are your size and that are rated for skateboarding: 187 Killer Pads, Protec, Triple Eight and Smith Scabs are all legit.

    I think that and maybe some wrist guards could go a long way in helping you commit! At some point you pretty much have to just give in to the inevitable fall and get it out of the way, and then you'll be good to land it after that (don't want you to get seriously injured trying it though!)

I took my kids up to the new park being built and started skating around tryna work off the rust ect then these kids rocked up hats backwards on bmx and scooters (the cool kids arrive) I chat with one who was skating for a minute or so just saying wassup and that they seemed aight, they start riding doing fkn backflips and shit off the quarters and then they were chilling for a bit and I was skating up and down and each time ide skate up the ramp they were sitting on ide hear em talking to each other and they were literally talking about going home after this to play Roblox... Oh my gosh, I didn't mean to make it about money like that (that's my bad), it's just I rode one from a store called 'Big Lots' once, and I kept falling off and I couldn't keep my balance and there wasn't any friction on the grip tape and it wouldn't roll! (it was fully terrible) and I didn't realize that the problem wasn't with me until later on when I rode a real one and everything worked like it was supposed to, so I was just trying to relay on that info. Anyways, that sounds like a good plan, department store boards are better than nothing! (and who knows, maybe they are getting a little bit better?)
