    An excellent video Nigel. I have grown potatoes in 30 litre containers for several years and I have achieved similar results. I mix my home made compost with multi purpose compost and some garden soil to reduce the cost and as I am only growing for my wife and myself 12 containers are enough for me.

    Great video again Nigel. I have always grown potatoes in the ground and have a potato fork to lift them so get very few speared. However, the big problem that I find is that you can never get every last potato out at harvest so they come up the following year among the peas and beans which is a real nuisance. I have been so impressed by your potato crops that I have invested in some 30-litre pots and will be growing many of my potatoes in them.

    Hi Nigel Great informative video mate. I always used to grow spuds in the ground as most folk did in them days but stopped because I was having to throw half away due to slugs and dreaded wire worm. Then a few years ago I watched a video from another KZreadr and thought I will give it a go and never looked back. I did try the 50ltr pots and put 6 spuds in thinking I would get a huge crop but got less out than in the 30 ltr with two in. Take care and be safe. 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

    Love your growing guides Nigel, so much!! I would really love to use containers this year, but, the cost of the containers and extra compost is prohibitive for me this year. I must put them in the ground this time around! Perhaps next year when I get settled into another new home, I'll get the chance to do it this way. I much prefer the bucket for just those reasons you've cited! Added this to my reference list for growing! I'll be revisiting!! Hell of a harvest on that tarp!! Silly fox, running through containers! No doubt they will now run through netting and pots! LOL Nice hauls!! Huge potatoes!! Great vid, Nigel!! Thank you!! Happy St. Paddys day!🍀💖

    We grew all our potatoes in bins, stacked tires, totes. Anything we could find around the homestead. This was the first time we had tried growing them in totes. We ended up planting 27 bins etc. And we ended up harvesting 160 pounds in August 2020. So we thought let's use some sprouting potatoes we had and fill them again. We only had enough seed potatoes to fill 12 again. And we ended up getting another 50 pounds out of those. We harvested those in early November. I have already planted 8 of our bins with a potato named warba. Didnt grow that kind last year. But going to try them this year. Also got Kennebec, Yukon and russet burbank. Going to plant more bins this spring. As I canned alot of the potatoes from last year. And we used all the canned potatoes up by Feb. And had to buy 50 pounds more to can. So I would like it if I could grow enough to can all we need for the year. As we really love canned potatoes. But just a note. Red potatoes don't can well. They mush out too much. So I'm not growing any red ones this year. And no purple potatoes as my hubby doesn't like them. I think their ok. Not my fav either. But all the white potatoes canned good. But at the age of 61. Growing potatoes in totes. Its so much easier! My hubby thought it sounded like a weird idea. But went along with it. I showed him videos of other older people doing it and getting a good amount of potatoes. He is now a convert. No back breaking digging. Then all the back breaking digging them back up! Only way this homestead and us older gardeners are EVER growing potatoes again! Happy gardening everyone!

    I have 100 seed potatoes planted inground 4 different varieties. This is also my first time growing potatoes in containers I have about half of them started. I have them under 6 mill plastic hoop frames and already had 2 frosts 22° farenheit I'm not sure i think 32° farenheit is 0 Celsius? Everything survived and I have potatoes and onions sprouting already. That's 47 days earlier than ever before in my 6b zone. If my containers are as full of potatoes as yours are I'll be very happy. I only have determinate varieties this year. We're going big with potatoes and onions this year. I enjoy watching UK gardeners, most seem to use as much of the space they have to grow food. I've taken this approach to gardening also.

    Hi Nigel, Thank you for the info you gave me at the beginning of the season to grow as explained. My 22 pots are not doing too bad, some stalks are much larger bigger than others, the flowers on the top have now gone, but not seen before there are very small , looking like, cherry tomatoes growing where the flowers were. Have you any idea what these are, and a fellow gardener is the same, and wondered if they were edible.( yuk.? ). If the trial growing this way is successful, then say no more, that’s the way it will be. I have done as I believe you did once, and that is grow in the ground, they are doing ok also, but what the quantity will be is to be seen. My only concern as to whether I have done right or wrong is is that I have watered every day until the water runs out of the bottom of the tubs, my fear is it could rot the crop, what do you think.? 🤔😊🍺

  • @joemercieca4794

    @joemercieca4794

    2 жыл бұрын

    Those "cherry tomatoes" are potato seed pods. DONT EAT THEM they are POISONOUS. They contain solanine the same chemical contained in green potatoes and the haulms. DONT EAT THE GREEN PORTION of a potato either. Dont overwater potatoes. They require drainage. Put a finger in down to the knuckle. Simply check the soil is moist. Unless you live in a hot climate once a day is most likely too often. If it is not moist, water it. You are correct - water pots till the water runs from the holes. If a pot is extremely dry, water it till water drains from the holes. Come back an hour later and repeat. This is to ensure the pot is moist because a very dry pot may result in the soil repelling water. I hope that helps.

    Hello Karen and welcome to the channel 😀. If you store the potatoes in a paper sack in a cool dark place, they should store for at least 3 months. The main crop will usually store a bit longer. Your second question is difficult to answer, it can depend on how many times you eat potatoes each week and are you trying to be self sufficient all year round? Seems the main crop harvested at 45 weeks, the plants would have died off the previous fall. So leaving them in the buckets until Spring would be more of a natural way of storing them long term. No leaves, no growth. That would be, as long as the soil doesn't freeze and stay frozen. We are in Maine, USA. The ground here freezes feet deep and stays frozen for 4-5 months. If the soil drops below 4-5° C, the starches turn to sugar. Still good to use for seed potatoes, but not very tasty. Excellent tutorial, touched all bases completely. TYFS
