I love learning new things.....and I just learned there are determinate and indeterminate potato varieties! I've been gardening for 60+ years, including potatoes off and on, and this is the first time I've ever heard this! Tomatoes...YES, potatoes.....hummm. I had to pause the video to research this for varieties because over the years we always "hill" our potatoes. Apparently some years we have actually had the indeterminate ones because of the growth and ability to harvest more for longer periods. It crossed my mind at times that sometimes we had better production than others and I knew it was the variety but I didn't know why. Apparently the main one we grew that was indeterminate was the Kennebec. Other varieties I've grown have been Red Pontiac, Nordland, Red Cloud and Russet and Yukon gold. It's past the traditional St Patrick's Day time to plant here in my zone 6b garden but we can't get in there yet to get it going. I know we still have plenty of time yet. (One year we planted a huge amount of sweet potato slips and grew nothing but tops. Not one sweet potato tuber, Still haven't figured that out. )

I appreciate your approach. I have a few no dig beds because they are established enough and I have raised beds but I also plan to expand this year and I will till the area out of necessity. I’m more of a - till responsibly and only as needed - gardener and I don’t that is shameful. I have compost but not an inexhaustible supply and I feel like my soil is 3/4 stones ( I know some of y’all can relate ) so I have to amend as opposed to building up over time above ground.

Peroxide is also great for sanitizing garlic cloves against fungal spores and it will also mess up mites and should kill them drown them out as well. I use it to sanitize garlic, onions, potatoes and etc so that I dont bring in some disease, im ocd about my garlic clove sanitizing though cause rot will ruin a garden for a long time.

Question Have you ever seen potatoes sit SO long they grow chitts, then those chitts grow tiny potatoes, & then those tiny pots start to sprout also ??? I had THIS happen to me, SO strange. I have a picture on my community page, I'm calling then tiny air potatoes. ANYway sometimes..., I forget things, & when I do sometime strange things happen. 😆 I have planted those tiny potatoes, in hope they will grow and produce potatoes to eat we will have to see. I will try to keep an update on these air spuds...

3 levels of poly cord with some bells on them. I use clasps to make a space that opens for me. I also have a small gate I bought. You can see pictures of it when I do my Garden Ramblings. Using that style of pitchfork for hay gets yur tines bent it tough soil. Better to use and actual potato fork the tines are wider and sturdier. As you can see the bed was already pre-pulverized with another tool before Gary brought in the slim hay fork.

No problems but the spring planted potatoes eventually want to regrow. You have a lot of time but when you see them starting to grow, remove them. If it gets too cold they will turn mushy :D

I love using cardboard! Best thing about it is is lasts just enough time before it breaks down in Fall and Winter. Surprised that Potato didn't rot all winter in the ground, interesting. I always till, No till means more weeds, I did a test on that once. Horrible how many weeds came up by not tilling

You should do more research into potatoes. Potassium is what should be added extra.

I said potassium and phosphorous. In my garden I found phosphorous matters more, but I could have been clear. The addition of phosphorous is what mattered more. I too live in Maryland zone 7. Very sorry to see Gary recommend the Leaf-Gro product from Montgomery County, MD. I know he has promoted this product for quite some time so I took his advice. I always use a soil sifter anytime I add amendments to my beds and so glad I did. The amount of glass, plastic, and small metal fragments I pulled out of several bags of LeafGro was shocking. Additionally, I picked up an invasive onion eating bore from these "fine" products as well. Be advised, these bags are filled with land fill garbage--You really want that in your vegetable garden?

If you're getting stuff from a municipal fill, it's just going to happen. You take the risks. Same thing happens with arborist wood chips. I get a truck load every now and then and will find a little bit of trash mixed in. Same thing with getting used coffee grounds. Buying store bought stuff usually won't have garbage in it, but that's not always the case. However, store bought stuff tends to be a lot more expensive than municipal stuff

I never had the issue. Not one piece of garbage. It really isn't land fill garbage added in. Anyway sorry you had issues. And insects can come in from any bagged product from anywhere. Ive gotten poly cord in horse manure composts. Shredded plastic in my mulch dumps. It happens.

Thanks very much for the reply. I might suggest taking a look at the Maryland Environmental website pertaining specifically to leafgro. It mentions that these materials are "diverted" from landfills and then screened. In essence, you, me, and everyone who purchases this product has absolutely no idea of what is in it--where it came from, and what chemicals it has been sprayed with. Perhaps at least a brief disclaimer about this product would be a kind PSA because some people take your advice for the gospel without bothering to look into it further. As far as isolating my onion borers-I can say with absolute certainty that it came from this product because I only added it to one bed and was infected in that one bed--even though I had onions and leeks in multiple beds. Haven't used the product in 3 years, refrained from planting onions for the last 2 years and magic no more bores.

​​​@@mikehope6916 The solution then is to make our own compost. It just takes a little time, space, and knowledge. I buy organic mushroom compost until I can turn out my own. I have heard of people having issues with most brands... some not as much as others... While some have only had great product, others had a bad experience. Bottom line, when I pay extra for organic, that's what I expect, minus the landfill products and sprayed ingredients. It's hard to know which products to trust, but conducting one's own due diligence is a must. Yesterday at an ACE, I saw a sign that advertised organic compost. There was no place on the bag itself that said "organic", so I made them change the sign.

You don't want to have the leaves turn green on the potatoes...?

I think more no till advocates need to Say "Yes it is ok to till/turn your soil" some seem to be like "omg its NEVER ok to till, you will destroy your ground" or it comes across being like that. i can understand not tilling big azz prairies worth of land but not a small little garden. sometime you do NEED to till.
