I'm making leaf mold for the first time, growing potatoes in buckets, and have wicked killer compost-it's all so exciting. Now if only the tomato blight that was non existent ten years ago would stop despite all efforts I'd really be happy.

Thank you! Great videos! Because of your videos, I tried growing potatoes in containers for the first time this year. It is very hot here in Southern California-USA so I was worried about it being too hot here (100+ F). A critter ate the tops of the plants in 3 containers but the other potatoes in containers are still growing. For the three containers that had their tops eaten, I got lots of little potatoes.(~20-25) I used Miracle Grow brand soil for raised beds in all my containers and planted 4 potato starts in each laundry hamper sized container.(18” diameter x 13” tall). I didn’t realize how many potato starts would be sent from seed companies so I had to put 4 in each container. I am new to this and really loved discovering the potatoes in the soil. I sat in a chair and slowly transferred the souls to another container as I searched for potatoes. It was fun. I had not fertilized the plants, so from watching your video I will fertilize the plants now. Thank you for sharing your potato growing secrets!

One of my favorite videos of Ms Liz and Mr Jay is the one where she gave herself ( I think) three months to harvest five hundred pounds of food. I can't recall exactly the length of time. I also think it was originally 300 lbs but she increased it since she was doing so well. Everyone should watch it. The possibilities of regular people growing so much food!!

Here's something you might want to try. line a big bucket with a big strong bag (holes in the bag). Lift the potato plant out as I do with the shopping bags. The small potatoes tend to be on the outside of the root ball with the bigger potatoes hiding in the middle. Remove all the small ones you can see then lift the potato plant back into the bucket to grow on. This might be a way of getting the bigger potatoes even bigger? What do you think? HGV

My friend, more than one of your video's has inspired me to try different things out. I plan on growing different varieties of garlic in the future and gifting garlic braids to family members in the future. I can tell you that my wife appreciates the inspiration that you've given me to start growing food again. I used to have a raised bed back when we lived in New Mexico and were in college, I can't count how many grocery bags of tomatoes I gave away those years. It wasn't until I ran into your channel, and one by an Australian chap, that I started seriously looking into growing food again. Now I've got another bed going, and am looking for large tubs to grow potato's, as well as have set up my own vermicomposting bin. I think one thing my wife is happy for is that I won't be holding up the line at the grocery store anymore trying to purchase turnips, they never seem to scan right...so we always have to wait on a clerk to come help...lol... I'm excited to start growing my own potatoes. That's one crop I've never seemed to get right.

great job it is much less work to plant and harvest, i never had much luck with containers i do best in ground with all vegetables but after seeing your potatoes i might try it next year thanks for a great video.

The benefit of containers Patrick, It holds the moisture better than the ground does, so there are fewer spikes with moisture identical less stress on the plant

I noticed with each larger container your potatoes were larger! I would love to have some like these and be quite happy! Any size potato has it’s benefit from just boiling some to baking with the larger size potatoes if this indeed is the kind for baking. A meal with potatoes growing up was a luxury especially in our huge family of eight kids. My five brothers had the hollow legs! Love watching your channel, keep up the good work. 👍❤️

I think it is a great harvest!

Growing large potatoes that are not hollow in the middle requires several things: (1) the use of boron which regulates water uptake which also affects mineral uptake; (2) using several applications of Magnesium Sulfate & Calcium Nitrate as well as Potassium nitrate. ALL vegetables need adequate Calcium Nitrate & Magnesium Sulfate to grow big without forcing. Forcing is done by using too much Ammonium Nitrate = Nitrate of Soda. (3) ALL vegetables need Potassium Nitrate to have a sweet flavor. Potassium Nitrate can be used on potatoes without producing an ugly scab! The scab makes them look like they got small pox and is unsightly. Many people find Brussel Sprouts somewhat; bitter. To fix that problem, use Potassium Nitrate several times during the growing season on your plants. (4) To also grow large plants, all plants need adequate spacing: at least 12" between potato seed; 5" on center planting in a row of carrots, beets & parsnip will make them 3" diameter on the round. If you want store bought size carrots or parsnips you have to plant them about 1.5" on center. Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, swiss chard, kale, need to be spaced 18" on center to all for adequate space for the leaves to expand adequately! Some huge cabbage need a 3' spacing in the row and in all directions to get best results!

Great video as always Tony. I'm growing rudolph potatoes in your recommended oakland 30L buckets having followed your previous videos. I pranted them 21st April and they are now upto to chest height with odd flower opening (i'm 5"10") Is this ok as thick strong stems and leaves, Just worried nothing good going on underground being so tall ? When do I havest them amd Charlottes i planted at same time but they are a lot smaller in size. Thnaks mate and sorry for long message. ROb

Hi Robert, The amount of rain has extended the growth making it taller this year than normal, Just leave the keep going until the foliage goes back to give them time to form spuds, Pull the flowers off this is just wasted energy that can be used into producing bigger tubers

Hi. Great video. I've been growing potatoes in containers for the last 3 years but I find the big disadvantage is the constant watering. In this year's hot weather this meant virtually every day. The ones I had in the ground could go a week or more. Also twenty, 30 litre containers use a lot of compost which doesn't come cheap. I do make my own but not enough for so many potatoes. The main advantage for me is no slugs and they come out nice and clean.

Hi Steve, Yes compost can get expensive, However You can reuse this next year if you did not have blight, This means its halving the bill. Then after the second year can end up in your beds to further enrich those. As for watering even when we hit 36 here in Wales this year, I was still only watering them every three days on average. I water until its flooding out of the holes in the bottom, then this saturates the compost, I dont water again until when I stick my finger in it is dry and no moisture can be felt.

Try one with coconut coir it helps retains moisture and the plants to absorb nutrients added to the mix ... Hope you crack that world record. Love your determination.

Some lovely looking spuds there. Good for eating. Is it worth trying in root pruning type pots to maybe cut down on no. of roots therefore potential tubers that can grow??

Ive tried the root trainers and they dont do as good in them as the soil dries much quicker, I think its because of the retention they do so well

UK Here We Grow I’m still sorting my new allotment Tony, just made my first raised bed to get ready for the no dig approach. I’ve grown potatoes in containers though and they taste Amazing!! 😊

Smashin video and fantastic tips. I'm going to give planting potatoes in pots a go next year. Do you know if terra cotta planters are ok for the potatoes? I might try to plant some and put the pots in my wee green house and see what happens.

Shirley, I have never tried terracotta, I think you may find they dry out way to often though due to their porous nature, but try them on the understanding you may be watering constantly, The plastic retains moisture so even in the heat wave we had for 3 months I was still only watering every 3 days

It's now 19th Jan on the Wirral and I'm just wondering if it's beneficial in starting them off at 19/20 degrees in the heated propogator? What do you think? Eggsy

Thanks for the compliment. no dont start them on heat. place them in egg trays in the window and keep cool. you dont want to get them to big before planting out for the last frost

What is your watering regime as I never know how much or how often for my 30ltr buckets. When harvested the compost seems too dry and the yields are not brilliant. Great video thanks. David

David, I water until its coming out of the holes in the bottom, once I see that I know all the compost has enough water, excess drains, I do not water again until I stick my finger in the compost and it feels dry if it's moist I hold off on watering. I was only watering every three days even during the heat wave. It is much better to water properly every few days rather than a little every day

tony i have grown from cuts they tend to bring larger but fewer taters.

Hey, love your vids, very informative for a noob like myself. My spuds have been in a raised bed for about 6 weeks and they were doing really well...until last nights unexpected frost has done alot of bad damage to the leaves...is there anything i can do to save em? Ty in advance 👍🥔

Yeah most people got caught with it I fleeced mine but the frost was so deep it got them too. Leave them they will throw new tops and be fine but will set them back a few weeks

Everyone reaches for perlite. Have you tried ground corn cobs which are used for rabbit litter for house rabbits?

2/3 of my potato crops for next season will be in pots. I agree with your thinking about restricting the container size 👍....have you considered leaving them in the smaller pots for much longer before potting on...... restricting the roots and leave to the last minute before going to 30ltr?. What is the record weight for one potato?.I have had some decent size Sarpo Mira that have been left in the ground over winter.....any chance of maxing out the growing season by moving them towards the end of season into the tunnel?......not being able to see the crop does help does it 😀😀😀😀😀😀. The WR is held by Peter Glazebrook mate and currently stands at 10.98 pounds so need a hell of a spud to beat it. I have many ideas for next year, this year was to try larger containers but thats not the answer

Yes. But my potatoes are rubbish, Lol. Nice video. I haven't watched in a long time, been too busy to watch all my subs, but You've gotten so "professional" and the video edits are nice and smooth .

Totally understand its always hard to share your time among all the channels you are subscribed too. I am glad you found the time to visit again, i really appreciate it. I am working hard on filming and editing to improve the videos for you guys, the retention is showing that they are being recieved well :) Why weren't your potatoes very good?

UK Here We Grow -Weather in NY cold and rain, then hot and drought, now cold and rain. Greens lovely, marble size potatoes

That sound like the UK lol. I am sorry the potatoes you had this year were poor, I have loads on actually showing these potatoes and plenty for eating and so forth. So just run through them and copy the steps you will be having fist sized potatoes on your dinner plate in no time. 15lbs out of one container typically so saves loads of room, check this video out. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZytzpKEeNDPe8o.html

Tony (btw, awesome name :) ) have you thought of making your own containers with e.g. sliding panels so you can periodically reach a hand in and pull off the extra, undesired spuds as they form?

I have tried that in the past Tony, (by the way, What a great name you have) :) However it damages too many of the roots and really sets the plants back, Next year I may try surface growing and see if thats easier but just for the giants, the normals will always be in 30 litre containers

1 suggestion start and finish in the same pot . It helps keep any stress or root damage from transplanting . Wich results in bigger fruits.

John most times they are grown in the same bucket or pot, but this was originally a WR attempt and you need to reduce tubers to out the growth into one tuber
