Hello, I am Nigel Jewkes and welcome to my MUDDYBOOTZ ALLOTMENT CHANNEL.
I plan to upload a regular update into the activities on my allotment. See what's sowing, growing and cropping, plus all of the preparation that goes into maintaining and improving my plot.
I visit a few Gardening Shows through the year, and will be sharing my visit with my subscribers
Thanks for visiting and Happy Gardening!

Hello from Maine, USA! I am wondering if you could talk about how often you have to change the wood frames that make up your beds. Thanks for another great video…always a pleasure
Hi Diann, that is something I hope to cover in autumn (fall) This is my 11th year on my allotment and the wood surrounds are starting to fail. Many thanks for watching 😊
nice video nigel
I managed to avoid any frost damage on my potatoes, polytunnel did help though. 🌻Happy gardening, Terry King.
In hindsight, not being part of the race to produce the earliest potatoes, delaying planting certainly pays off for me, plus the straw topping combined with debris net covering gives an extra few days between waterings before I get round to fitting the soaker hose. 😊👍🏻
@MuddyBootz we are never behind everyone else is too early.
Hi Nigel. The dreaded frost. Hopefully your potatoes have picked up. My Kelsae have been out some weeks now. I lost a couple, and then D T Brown sold out, so I had to top up with Exhibition ones. Great update. Elaine.
I put 250m of flowers in beds this week. Lots more to do, but its all getting going now. Lots if tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, lettuce, etc going well. Soon be looking amazing 😊
That sounds great. How about sharing it on here for us to see 😊👏
Once again, another great video Nigel. I'm a bit the same at the moment with our winter brassica crops and spring flower seedlings everywhere and nowhere else to put them. The weather is starting to cool down now and we're in for a week of rain so it's indoor activities at the moment. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
nice job Nigel all we need now is some heat
Everything’s looking good Nigel, your brassica growing always amazes me 🎉 not including the root trainers, what module trays do you use? I’m considering investing in some container wise but looking for any ‘cheaper’ decent alternative for now.
Hi Vanessa, I have some container wise including some Huw Richards (HR10 & HR20). Also for 24 cells I use Garland PREMIUM cell trays. As tough as CW trays but bottom hole is smaller. (About 1/3 of cost also)
@@MuddyBootz Thanks Nigel will take a look 👍🏻
@@vanessawilkinson7089 This is for 2 trays. A bargain!!! I have about 20 now. www.thesafetysupplycompany.co.uk/p/9569780/garland-premium-24-cell-inserts-pack-of-2-grl-g207.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA2pyuBhBKEiwApLaIO-wCsLuC2XQZQqsMKe9NAyJ9E7uJig7r71-flswKI69_JBG5oKoP1BoCOhQQAvD_BwE
Great video Nigel, I'm looking at your greenhouse and thinking I'm not the only one with full greenhouse, I've set one greenhouse up with the tomatoes and still have two more to get ready, I think sometime next week i will be dumping out the brassicas into there final beds, I love the wolf tiller I bough one and was given another....😂😂Hope your well Regards Mark
I enjoyed the update! Those onion transplants look superb! I love this time of the year!
Formidable bravo 😊 A bientôt
Interplanting rules! Great stuff Nigel.
i've had cabbage and caulis out since mid march. they've come on in leaps and bounds. obviously you need the right varieties. to help the plants along there was no heating in the polytunnel. just a plastic bottle over them for the first couple of weeks from planting out..................brian
Hi Brian, brassicas are tough plants. I did plant them out a too early a few years ago. They leaves went purple, it knocked them back and they took a few weeks to recover. They would have gone out by now but the beds wasn’t ready due more important things to attend to 👍🏻
Quality content as always. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
What do you use to help with club root
Hello Caroline, beside adding lime to the soil, I also use a product called PERLKA. Will be showing this in my next video 😊
A very informative and enjoyable video, thank you.
Thank you 🙏 really informative and inspiring/ I’ve an allotment and a u tube channel and like you I enjoy growing 🌱 my own food and helping others do the same but I still have a little way to go with my channel but I’m always moving forward 😊
I bet all your vegetables taste amazing Nigel! You really show them so much love 💚 a wonderful video as ever Geri
5:40 ..I used black tape to hold the chain in place, it saved a pair of hands. 6:35 ... I spent an hourfiguring out how to get that plug in position! In the end I gave the peg free range, put it in to the wrong position so that the cover was levered open, then I used my swiss army knife to push the peg into position so that the cover clipped into place. Then I tightend the cover and drove the screw in. I have the 6" version and I am prety chuffed with it to be honest.
Hi Nigel. Can I ask what heater do you use in the greenhouse?
Could you list the places where you buy things from hard to find things thank you 😊
nice mate
Ive just done parsnips in a woodchip mound, made trough filled with compost. Blessings from North Wales bro
u ever tried growing them in woodchip? i just buried a row under woodchip around about march time
good video again. what do u think of them auga hole cutter?
I only buy clover ..any of the peat free stuff I’ve bought has been rubbish.. you’re right they just chuck any old S in it… The peat ban has been knocked back to 2030 afaik ✌️
I'm lucky I managed to find Clover this year .I won't be using peat free .
I still have some bags of Jack's Magic, but have experimented for when peat free is the only one available
Thanks Nigel, quite cold here so fingers crossed it warms up soon, great video as always 🙂
Same here with poor germination with spring onions not sure why either grrrr
What month was this please
Ive been using coco coir to retain some moisture, really happy with the results.
Hello Nigel, agree with you, peat free compost is very poor, why the rush to introduce it? It is of course because of 'climate change'. Coir one of the main constituents of peat free, needs huge quantities of water to clean it, and has to be transported by ship. How is this enviromentally friendly? I understand, that professional gardeners can continue to use peat. Load of nonsense.
The ban applies to the trade in 2028 as well.
Completely agree. I find it's best to add a load of vermiculite to it to try and hold some moisture and then once sown I cover in perlite to keep the moisture in.
@@alessandrogensale8817 We should not have to use substandard product.
Another great video nige one question when growing the crimson crush Tom's outside do you treat them like glasshouse growing pinch out side shoots ect many thanks ian
Hello Ian, yes I doo remove the side shoots but sometimes the odd one gets missed and grows at a rapid rate 😱
Really interesting comment about the peat free compost Nigel I’ve been using Durstons with added gro boost and normally found it good, but this year it’s absolutely full of plastic and twigs in virtually all the bags I bought !!! And is grew with you on germination I’ve had some shockers up to now, but we’ve got to keep going 😂👍 stay safe David 👍👍
Hi David, I plan on stocking up on Clover to use as a buffer until the PF gets sorted 👍
Can you order that online Nigel as my local suppliers do not have that ??
Multi seed beetroot. I hear it all the time. I've never had more than 2 or three germinate in a cell. I plant 2 or 3 per cell. I'm thinking I might just pop one in each cell and see if it gets more than one beet seedling. Nice video btw 👍
Good luck growing this year hopefully the weather will be good enough to to get a decent cropping. Nigel how do you deal with creatures and the beds. We are still having rabbit and chipmunk issues in the beds. Take care Nigel enjoy the gardening Cheers Harold
Hi Harold, I am fortunate apart from the odd fox and mole, the beds get undisturbed. Saying that, the brassicas and onions are all netted. I think the foxes keep the rabbits away, but I have spotted a badger a couple of times. 😀
I use the same Clover and I love it. Bought as much as I could this year in case I can’t get next year. I’ve tried so many peat free and they’ve all been rubbish, literally. Great video thankyou ❤
Klasman 2 is the No, 1 in my book and have used it for years. is German peat and first class, no peat no grow.
Hopefully common sense will prevail and the deadline will be adjusted until something acceptable is available of content quality. Bathgate Champions Blend was by far the best that I have trialed but unfortunately the horticultural wing of Bathgate closed down 👍
Yes..a late start to the season for me too cos of poor wearther conditions!!
Mother Nature has a great way of catching up 👍
I don't think the germination problem is the compost as seeds will germinate on wet kitchen roll I've found any seeds I saved myself and some are three to four years old have high germination rates but bought seeds from popular varieties like White Lisbon have been less than ten per cent
Hi Chris Seed quality has been questionable on some varieties for a few year, but with the PF composts I have tried, a lot dry out too quickly and then become difficult to rewet, also for seed germination I want the finest compost possible. Lots of twigs etc can cause air pockets which will effect germination rates. If you compare some of the PF seed and cutting composts against something like Levington's F2+S, the difference is miles apart. 👍
Very interesting about the peat moss. Will keep an eye out for that sort of trouble here. Thanks so much!
Hopefully we can keep some form of peat for a few years until the can produce something of a reasonable standard. 😀
wow good job brother.
Great update Nigel , you make it look so easy , your problems with germination for your spring onions is the same problem I have with my Globo's, I have given up lol and changed to Ailsa Craig and hey ho nearly 100% success , anyway thanks for your helpful tips and advice keep up the good work 👍
Hello Jim, I think I have struck lucky, the ones sown in Clover Peat are popping their heads up 🤣👍
@@MuddyBootz good stuff Nigel, makes it all worthwhile doesn't it 👍
Hard to beat Clover compost, also it is well milled and prepared. Co Down
One of the best value on the market now that Bathgate have ceased trading 👍
Stupid idea, just sow them straight into the ground, they'll grow quicker. My peas are in the ground and are flowering like mad and even the first pods on when I looked today.. I don't sow any seeds in April as is all in and growing well, will even harvest new spuds next week.Yes, I do and get fab germination, but make sure the ground is wet first, so day after rain is ideal, is same as soaking. Yes Hurst's Greenshaft is a very good pea and that is what I have in now with peas on.Just pulled the last of my carrots and won't have my new crop for about 2 weeks yet.Just put my toms out and now in flower. I pot on when first true leaf into 3.5" pots then plant out when first truss shows. Sowing to planting out is normally 7 weeks with me O dear and I was getting too hot checking my apple blossom to see how many had set and was 74 or 23 which ever you please, but was cooking last week at 33 or 92. now that is warm for April. Why don't you use the best and stopped been harassed by all these thickies that say peat is bad to use as runs out. NO it doesn't it is being made constantly from moorland vegitation rotting down. Klansman No 2 is ideal, have used in for donkeys and get excellent results with it and food, Maxicrop seaweed extract, perfect balance for all plants.
Hi Nigel Great update again. I am so behind this year but getting there slowly. 👍👍👍👍👍
We will get there mate with a bit of help from Mother Nature. Another sharp frost the other night that seen off lots of young potato growth. Mine still in the tubs....now whos behind...us or the early starters 🤣👍
Hi Nigel Looks like your in full scale production again this year. Cheers
Back up and running mate, but we still get the odd frost at night....rapidly running out of space 🤣👍
The spuds don't care when they are planted LOL No joy in lifting speared potatoes! I've just bought 2 more straw bales - £4 each 🙂 100% with you on the peat ban as you know - totally uncalled for and greenwashed into legislation! 😮 Great video Nigel!
Great price one the straw, I use it to top dress the spud buckets..... Yes the peat battle is a pain, but I may stock up just in case 👍👍👍
@@MuddyBootz I keep stocking up, then using it! 🤣
Great compost the clover peat based Nigel, I bought 9 extra bags for next year just in case the ban comes in at the end of the year, I have 3 varieties of main crop I'll be growing in 30L tubs, Cara Picasso Maris Piper, I can remember a few years ago you put them in tubs with the fish blood bone meal added and the foxes had a go at the tubs, fertiliser I mix with the old compost is potato fertiliser hoof and horn and fish blood and bone meal. great update, Steve
Good memory Stephen!!! Yes I remember in the morning, the huge holes and the odd tuber pulled out. Ive covered them now with straw, scaffold netting and barrier fence 🤣👍
one imortant thing i realised a couple of years ago. i can't firm plants in like i used to. it might sound petty but an example is my brassicas. i planted some caulis out in early march. they were growing fantastic til the heavy winds. the root rock was so severe i had to replace them.....................brian
I sympathise with you Brain, I had similar problem a few years back. Too lazy to stake the Brussels and most of them blew.. A hard lesson learned!!!👍
👍👍👍
