    As a third potato planting method, consider a Ruth Stout planting: put the potatoes just under ground, perhaps potatoes are covered by one inch of soil, add 12 inches of grass, hay, and straw. Do nothing for 3 to 4 month. At harvest time, push away the mulch, and harvest the potatoes. This will be a no dig harvest.

    Another very professional video Trevor. Comprehensive yet easy to follow. Thanks for taking the time to not only explain but also show the vital stages. I’m giving it a go. Haven’t got my hands on any rotted manure yet. I’m still very early stages of laying out my first plot. How will it be if I take a short cut and use a supply of chicken pellets instead of manure? Thanks for your hard work. Pat

  • @MuddyBootz

    @MuddyBootz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello Pat, Chicken pellets will be fine for the early stages as they contain a lot of nitrogen. Try and get a comfrey plant and soak the leaves in water, this produces a free high potash feed, which is what will help swell the tubers (tomato feed will do the same). Enjoy your crops!!! 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻

    A true Shakespearean Nigel “ to chit, or nor to chit, that is the question”. Another great video. On your advice from previous videos I planted the Sarpo Mira potatoes, now I won’t plant any other variety, so hardy, good crop and hardly any slug or worm damage.

  • @MuddyBootz

    @MuddyBootz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello, 😀 Taste is personal choice, that fact that they are not sold in supermarkets yet I dont think is due to taste, Sarpo was only bred in 2002 and introduced as a seed potato in 2013. When I first grew them in 2015, only 2 or 3 seed merchants had them. Now they are available in most garden centres. With the constant reduction of products to combat diseases in potatoes, blight will become an ever increasing problem and the Sarpo range are by far the best resistant varieties available. They also store much better for me, when I have had them along side King Edward. Many thanks for watching! 😀 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻

    Great video Nigel, thanks. How do you store your maincrop seed potatoes, which I presume you buy in January or February but plant later in the Spring? I know that there is not much benefit in chitting maincrops but I set them up along with the early potatoes in a light place because if I keep them in the dark they will produce long, white chits before planting.

    Hi Excellent. Just two questions. 1 I’ve brought earlies (some are already in 30 litres buckets in the greenhouse). But the seconds and the mains I don’t want to use yet. They are in a dark shed in the cardboard box came in, will they be ok? 2 Once you harvest potatoes how to keep them? Cheers John PS there was 3 questions but alcohol has fussed my brain, may come back tomorrow 😊

  • @MuddyBootz

    @MuddyBootz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello John, with the potatoes that you want to hold back, I would put them in the salad draw of a fridge. Temperature is the factor to consider. If it warms up a few degrees, in a dark shed, the tubers will produce long white shoots which will be no good for planting. When I harvest potatoes, I dry them for a week in a bread tray or wire rack and them put them in paper sacks. At the end of the year, temperatures are dropping which will help keep them dormant 👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻

    Hi Nigel not a question on potato’s but on celery , I’m having trouble getting it to germinate any ideas?

  • @MuddyBootz

    @MuddyBootz

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hello Nigel, I am just about to sow my celery. I normally used a 3" pot filled with multi-purpose compost, dampen the surface and then the seed is scattered on top. Add a very thin layer of fine vermiculite and the moisten again. Germination usually takes around 2-3 weeks. If you haven't got a propagator, put the pot inside a ziplock back to retain the moisture. Celery is a bog plant and must never be allowed to dry out (Try to keep the temperature 20-25C). I transplant the individual seedlings into modular trays when they are large enough to handle. The variety that I grow is Lathom Self Blanching. Good Luck 😀👍 🌻Nigel.............MuddyBootz Allotment🌻🌻
