2022 Husqvarna TE150i TPI - first ride review - raw thoughts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

First ride and raw impressions on my brand new 2022 Husqvarna TE150i TPI bike.
Sorry for the long video, but hopefully anyone considering this bike will find my thoughts on it useful. For reference I'm an average trail rider, 5'11" and about 180 lbs. The bike I'm coming from is a 300 two stroke, but I've owned and ridden a bunch of different machines previously. I've decided on a smaller 150 displacement so I could advance as a rider, instead of always using the bike as a crutch.
I only have a few hours on this bike, but so far I really like it and am looking forward to putting it through all sorts of gnarly stuff over the next couple of years.

Excellent video!! Love the commentary regarding the bike and your switch from a 300. Very helpful in my decision making process as I switch from a GasGas EC250 tpi to a 150. At my age the 250 is just too much. I spend more time hanging on and getting tired, than I do learning to ride better.

I´m loving mine 150i 22´. I rode 9 years on a CRF250x. Know I´m playing again. I was confused about buying a 150 or 250 two stroke, but I made a good decision choosing the small one. Easy to rida, really strong, smart, fast, and dangerous - it grows up very fast. At tight trails it´s fantastic. The suspension is absurd, very good! It saved me 4x. I think it could have a longer sixth gear. And I tire my left calf cause I need more shifting

Nice video. I owned a 2019 KTM 150 XC-W that I rode that season, and I rode mine very much like you're riding your bike in this video: That little engine was a 144cc torque monster. Excellent on trails with it's very usable low end and light-weight maneuverability made possible by such a low engine inertia. The bike I'm riding now is the polar opposite in the engine inertia department: A 2021 Honda CRF450RL. I'm actually kicking around the idea of getting another 150 for the trails. I wonder if getting the Husqvarna for the shock linkage would be worth it.

A friend of mine had a CRF450L for a couple of years and I actually very much enjoyed riding it. Definitely a heavier feeling bike, so it had to be ridden a bit differently, but I felt like the suspension was pretty well suited for trail work as well - nice and compliant, did not beat you up a ton, so the bike was a joy to ride all day long. I haven't ridden a KTM 150, but I've ridden a lot of other KTMs. I personally can't tell a huge difference between linkage and not linkage, with the PDS maybe being a bit more lively in general, but all that might also be a question of suspension setup. The main reason I went with a Husky are the ergonomics. On the KTMs I always feel like I'm being pushed forward a bit. The Husky seat feels "flatter" and is a bit lower, so it feels more natural to me to move back and forth on the bike while standing. It also makes emergency dabs more successful and easier to do all sorts of acrobatics in very technical terrain.

Interesting about the tires. The EU version comes with Michelin enduro medium tires, which are great tires... Levers are terrible and I can't find any replacement in Europe either. After watching your vids I became more interested in this bike. Then I went through its specs, cost, and compared it to other bikes. This thing in 2024 retails for $10,250 dollars. It weights more than a YZ250X when either bike is fueled up and costs more than $2000.00 dollars more. I know it is bristling with technology, but that is a tough financial pill to swallow. And there is something to be said about the absolute proven and tech free design of the YZX's. Furthermore, a YZ125X full of gas and ready to go only weights 212lbs and is almost $3500 dollars less expensive. To me this makes the Husky a really tough sell. Even compared to its stable mates, the 150X is expensive. For a little more money you can get a TE250, which ironically, weighs the same as the TE300 so a little more than the 250, the 300 seems to be the most practical of all of the Husky bikes.

@@easternyellowjacket276 you bring up some interesting points! I think there are a couple things at play here. In a nutshell, I don’t think one buys a smaller displacement bike to save money, it’s not really what they’re for. They are a tool for a specific purpose, and are positioned as such in the model lineups for each manufacturer. This (especially with 125cc two strokes) has traditionally been as a stepping stone for younger riders/racers coming from small wheel 85’s to their first “big bike”. The 150 is the more off-road/enduro focused version of that same principle. Costing slightly less is nothing but a marketing gimmick, because realistically the production costs between a 125/150 and a 250/300 are probably almost identical aside from a few pieces being a bit smaller. How much does 10lbs of aluminum and steel cost? $100 at most I’d guess. So really, people buy small bore two strokes because that’s what they need… whether it’s for their kids, or to learn the skills that those bikes teach you, as in my case. There are also all sorts of race classes that are cc specific - for example lites or 250cc classes, which is what people get 250cc 2 strokes for. The other aspect is that from a purely financial standpoint, I think cost of ownership is ultimately more important than the selling price. Putting maintenance costs aside, that’s purchase price minus used market sale price. In specific terms, my Husky cost me more than a YZ125X would - sure, but it I also sold two years / 130 hours later for more than I would have paid for that brand new YZ125X. With any popular brand, depreciation is likely pretty similar. KTM 300 two strokes are super popular, so they tend to be easier to sell and more in demand on the used market. Anything small bore is slightly more niche and difficult. Weight figures on paper tell a very small part of the story. I do a lot of hard enduro badly, so I drag bikes a lot, and some supposedly light bikes are very heavy and some heavy bikes are light simply because of where the weight is. Aside from the smaller amount of rotating mass giving it a more “flickable” feeling, the difference between a 150 and a 250/300 when picking them up is almost non-existent. I bet if I put two bikes side by side upside down on a hill and covered their logos, most people couldn’t accurately tell the difference. Lastly - the most important thing is what do you want the bike for? I’ve ridden a YZ125X and a YZ250X. They are VERY different motorcycles than a 150i, or any of the European two strokes for that matter. The Yamaha chassis and suspension is superb, but the lack of e-start is a serious drawback in technical riding and neither bike loves going super slow as much as the euro bikes do - the are cross country race bikes and feel it. Specific to the 150 vs 125x, the bottom end power advantage on the 150 is very significant.

I'm coming from a YZ250X and deciding between the TE/XC-W 150 or 250. Definitely more concerned with advancing my riding and reducing fatigue over just downright power. What you said about the vibration of the non-counterbalanced 150 has me leaning back towards the 250. If you were to choose only one which would you choose? Thanks

  • @DmitriyAdv

    @DmitriyAdv

    2 жыл бұрын

Well, I’ve chosen the 150 ;) As far as vibration, it’s kind of personal. The 150 vibrates less than any other non-counterbalanced two stroke. But any 2017+ KTM 250/300 is smoother than that. Really, you can’t go wrong. It really depends on what kind of riding you do and are looking to do. I’ve ridden a YZ250X and a KTM 250 XCW TPI. The KTM is definitely a smoother, but less pesky motor. Lots of torque, you can ride it in one gear all day long. The nice thing about Husky’s and KTM is they keep their value very well, so you can give one a try for a couple years and won’t have a problem selling it if you want to try something else.

I think it’s a perfect bike for Michigan. Power wise, there is plenty, especially since we don’t have any long steep climbs in this state. The light weight makes it super fun on the tighter trails. The Xplor suspension (same as on the other Husky TEs and KTM XCWs) is great for trail riding. It absorbs chop like nothing else. I’ve never ridden a KDX, but I had a KTM 200 for a number of years and this bike is pretty similar to that power wise. But it feels lighter and the suspension is better in my opinion.

If you are considering a 250 or 300 two stroke, this bike is identical to the TE250i or TE300i in every way except the engine. Same frame, same awesome brakes, and suspension. It’s a proper enduro bike. I’m coming from a 300 2-stroke and I feel like this bike has plenty of power for everything I want to do. The 300 is a bit easier to ride because you can be very lazy, but I feel like this bike will make me a better rider. In general, nobody except pro level riders needs or can actually use the power of a 250 or 300, and many people would actually be faster in the woods on a smaller/lighter bike.

I don't disagree with you. 150 or otherwise, all dirtbikes are expensive. Regardless of brand or displacement, you're basically going to be shelling out around $10k for a brand new enduro bike. I think this is partially because all of these bikes are basically race bikes, are damn good, and because they keep their value better than street bikes. Most people find them much more useful too, since an amateur rider can actually use a lot more of the capability of an enduro bike than they can out of a 1000cc motoGP bred monster. But, you can still go buy a trail or dual sport bike (TTR230 or CRF250 or something) for about half the price of one of these. Or get a used one. Good deals starting to pop up around here, now that the riding season is coming to an end :)

So are you glad you switched to the 150 from the 300? On paper, the weight of the 150 is very close to the 250/300…does the 150 still feel a fair amount lighter? In other words, does the lighter feel make up for the loss of power compared to your 300?

  • @DmitriyAdv

Static, moving it around, picking it up, it feels a little lighter. Riding, it feels significantly lighter and more nimble. As I mentioned in the video, the 300 is nice because I could ride it more "lazily". It allowed me to cover up mistakes and poor technique with power. For example - not really needing to be in the right gear, or to modulate the clutch on hill climbs. The 150 doesn't let me be lazy, (hopefully) making me a better rider long term.

It really depends on how you ride it. Much more so than any other bike I’ve had. If I’m off the pipe and riding smoothly, I have no problem getting 60 plus miles. If I’m being aggressive, it’s more like 35 miles.

Clickers are a waste of time front and rear. The xplor is awful, throw them away and put a good insert in. Drop your forks flush and make sure the stem nut is tight. I had no idea my 150 wasnt counter balanced, mind blown it is so smooth.

Thanks for the comment! I’ve ridden a lot of different bikes with different suspensions and setups. For my speed and the kind of riding I do, I find the Xplor to be the best off the shelf option, and work very well in general. Not to say there isn’t a way to suspension better, there always is, but right now I’m happy with it the way it is out of the box. I really like how easy open cartridge forks are to service as well.

It really depends on the size and fitness and motivation of the rider. It's still a full size (tall) dirtbike, so a shorter rider may struggle. It will also be a bit more clutch work than a typical trail oriented 4 stroke like a TTR, CRF230, or similar. So if it's a kid that's a bit more fit and aggressive - great bike. A kid that just wants to putt around on the trails with you, maybe a TTR or similar would be better.

  • @DmitriyAdv

I don't disagree... At least you can usually find some pretty good deals on the used market. And once bikes hit a certain price point they don't depreciate much. Regarding new bike prices, same can be said about other things - like trucks and houses. Try buying a truck for under $40k these days. The bigger issue is that the wages have not kept up with the inflation / cost of living over the past 20-30 years... but that's a topic for another channel :)

Ya 9 grand for a 150 is outrageous. Isn’t his bike meet for lighter, and inexperienced riders. And maybe younger riders too , how can they pay for this bike, maybe daddy will pay for it. Even when I was younger I always pay for my own stuff. Most can’t do that any more, suck.

  • @DmitriyAdv

@@thomastjg53 I bet the profit margin on the 150's is smaller for Husky/KTM than on a TE300i, considering it's identical to it in every way except a smaller engine. And there is not almost $2000 worth of extra metal in a 300 vs a 150 ;) I think the younger riders are probably not the market here unfortunately. They're buying YZ125X's for six and a half grand. Hell, even a KTM 125 XC is $7500... which I seriously considered myself. PS: As I mentioned in the video, the 150 has plenty of power for an average rider. I'm 5'11" and 180+lbs without gear and am no slower on it than my old 300.
