Hard Enduro training on the KTM 150 EXC Chris Birch
Спорт
I've got myself a KTM 150 EXC-tpi to play with. This was the first ride on some harder trails. My friends Ryan and Bryce are training for this year's Romaniacs race so we went to a blown out hill for some hill repeats.
This track has been smashed by 4WD'S the weather and lots of bikes, it's a challenge to make it tidy on my 300 so I was keen to see try and figure it out on the little bike. The 150 is really fun, I'm enjoying the challenge of figuring it out.

When it's hard in real life it always looks so easy on a video. That looked insane on the video so it must have been savage as hell. Unreal
This was a great video. Good to be able to watch yourself and others have a bit of a struggle on real obstacles and see how you approach them. Looked like a fun day
I can't even imagine how to do what you all did. My imagination can't go so far. Thanks for this great video Chris!
Awesome video Chris. This hill is always a good challenge, loving the content from this area of NZ. One of my favourite places to ride.
Great vid! 150 TPI is perfect for technical training .. so nimble, doesn't overheat (or boil gas), bullet proof clutch, quiet and doesn't really use any gasoline. And it has small engine cases, exhaust, muffler, everything.. Treat it with TSP power kit to make it even better.
Your real-time line decisioning is exquisite!
best trail riding video I have seen in a long time
Incredible craftmanship💪
omg bro those trails look GNARLY! great riding from all three of you well done
lol...I love Chris's sound affects! So entertaining to watch.
Looks like a hoot, fueling sounds perfect always love the renewed challenge!
not even a minute in the video and you already have my mind blown! goat! 🤯
When in doubt wheelie out 🔥🔥🔥🍺
The 150s fantastic when you get it on the pipe.... man it just launches
Great video! Thank you! I'm ah happy owner ov TE 150 2022!!!!
Nice and absolutely gnarly Bro 🔥

Wow! That was gnargly, clay as 🔥
Hard Enduro Training, Hardcore Amazing❤
Dood....to say you're understated is an understatement! And I mean that in the best possible way.
Hot dam that's one gnarly track!
that's some proper Red Bull NewZealandiacs right there, holy crap
Like how you get it up on the back wheel through those deep ruts 🤟👍
You're human after all, Chris lol nice vid, too see you struggling in some sections
Woah! Nice bro🔥
Great video this track looked like something a trials bike would be ideal for not an enduro bike, the Romaniacs race from the bits I've seen on KZread it's a bloody tough race and requires huge amounts of skill to complete.

My palms started sweating watching this.
Hey Master Chris Super to see you on a 150. Be great if you have a moment to kick out a vid with some more of your thoughts on the platform. Cheers
It looks exciting
Looks like fun.
Great Lesson - happy new year
That’s just nuts.
What a grueling workout. Also not for the feint hearted, riding alongside cliff faces.
Awesome riding location and conditions! Chris you need to search KZread for “Kinne Dad noises” it sums up your repertoire of sounds perfectly! 😂😂
Punishing stuff.
Did this Gnarly track up the Hikuai .some mean tracks up there,I ride through to the Neavesville 👌💪
Chris come to Central Texas next time in US. We have some great places to ride near Austin, put a clinic on!
I'm gonna have nightmares about this trail lol. I'd love to see one of you top guys ride an old xr400 up some hard lines. Would make great video :D

@@Yoda-em5mt so I’m hoping you can help me out. Why can’t I see your comment when I click “View all 4 replies”? I thought I was fairly tech savvy, but apparently not. And p.s., my comment was to see if he was being politically correct with the USA audience in regards to their sky fairy.
Why is this so much fun when it's so much work? I've been on a 2018 350 EXC for the past few years and am wondering if the 150 would suit me better for the gnarlier, slower trails that I ride most often. Great video!
So wish i was there playing ❤

That’s one of the nastiest trails I’ve *ever* seen. I’d crash before I went five feet! I wouldn’t even think to try it, even if I were young and healthy again, and even if I had a bike as good as these. What I had to ride back then? About all it had in common was that it was a two-stroke, and it *could* run off road - providing the trails weren’t too bad.

Come for a ride they said. It will be fun they said! 😅
About to get one to add to the 300 xc-w. (yes… I’m very fortunate to have both!) Found though no one makes an aftermarket exhaust flange protector for the 150 model. Only for 250/300 models. Do you know of any manufacturers that do? Why wouldn’t ktm have that item? Thanks
@ChrisBirchNZ

No I don't sorry. I don't run one on my 300 either.
UGH!! Deep ruts and slick mud. I would be stuck for sure LOL! The camera always makes ruts look small and hills look flat.
New subscriber from nagaland India
where in nz is this trail, would love to give it a go
Chris, good to see some of your 'hero' lines on this trail & your comments!! hey I have a couple of suggestions, feel free to shoot them down...:). your 150 is jumping on the pipe, as mine did stock... you might try adjusting the power value, it made a big diff on mine to smother the transition so it doesn't spin up in the clay as much etc.... also that flat spot off idle is exaggerated on mine when I heavily oil the air filter, (weird I know). & one last thing, a heavy rear tire takes away some of the hit too, more ridable in the slop, extra rotating mass benefit too. Looking forward to more 150Birchy!

Thanks for the tips. I'll definitely have a play with the power valve. Maybe a flywheel weight as well.
@learningtofly6804

@@ChrisBirchNZ Yes that'd be an even better solution.....As far as I know there is no off-the-shelf manufactured flywheel weight for the 150. Looking forward to seeing where you go with it!

hey you seem to know a lot about how to get the 150 enduro ready !! got a husky 150 she is awesome but you r right I get into trouble in the slick when the power hits....where do I start with the power valve ?? great vid Chris thanks

@@ildoc66 1st write down how many turns from flush your stock PV setting is.. Goto a slippery/loose hill and experiment, this way you will feel the difference between the various settings. Repeat the same section, Light it up. In winter where I live I have mine in rather far. Its less on off, a smoother transition,. The 150tpi has good mid power, (much more than the previous 150 Carby, although the Carby had better off idle) anyway use that mid. Also the screw the manual calls the idle screw (which is really a air screw) Turn it in and note its default setting. After you're happy with the pv, try ¼ to ½ turns from default on this idle/air screw and see if it helps off idle (takeoff) response. I recommended the heavy rear tire bc I couldn't find a flywheel weight (poor man's solution)+ the larger footprint of the tire helps hold traction.... it works for me. In the slick stuff, I often ride it up a gear, It is smoother, For example, if you have to go up a steep section with a short runup, take off in a second, have one finger on the clutch and modulate it. The clutch is super durable, use it. In your husky kit you should have a grey throttle cam (it ships with the black cam installed) The Grey is a little softer, better for Techy riding. The only other thought to consider is how your weighting the pegs,. I'm keen to see where Birchy take his...(or if he runs back to the 300:) 150's require a different riding mentality. Hope this helps a little.

@@learningtofly6804 hey thanks a lot mate ! that is great help , will start working on it.....and when you talk about heavier tire, which one are you using ? makes sense increasing rotating mass and foot print at the rear cheers fab

And people put too much weight on the bikes ability, but it’s mostly the rider. It would be killer to see Chris do some vintage KTM rides and just crush these lines
Hey Chris, love to see a few more bits of clips included with a 3rd person cam, mostly to actually watch your riding and technique which is hard to see in the 1st person shots. We get to watch some of your mates ride and their techniques, but it's different to getting to watch you. If you can ever get clips off a mate or them to wear your go pro more often, that'd help create some really great contrast in your content that I'd love to see more reglarly.

@@ChrisBirchNZ The drone clips and first person clips are epic. Just try to get a mate to record on a gopro at the same time (either your go pro on their own), and splic where possible. It's great learning from your riding, and I'm going to buy your course once I sell my current bike to get the next one as i'll have a bit of money left over at the time and keen to work through your course. I'm mostly working on transferring my MTB skills (endro and eMTB endro) and trying to learn the differences. If you ever got around to it, a course of how to transfer your skills that'd be really cool since you do both sports and I'm sure I'm not the only one switching to adv or endro from MTB/eMTB. I've done basic offroad moto as a kid, no lessons, and then been training in MTB, and actually am a level 2 pmbi instructor. I'm now looking to sell my road moto to get a ktm 890 adventure r and hit the offroad world.
It reminds me of riding up Mt Greenland but even worse
