2021 Triumph Street Twin | The Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Triumph Street Twin is Triumph's entry level offering in the Bonneville range. Offering a fantastic mix of looks, performance and ergonomics - it almost feels wrong to call this entry level! This 900cc heritage offering really is stunning, take a look what Brett thought on his full road test review!

I bought a 2022 Street Twin a few months ago, trading in a KTM 390 Duke in the process. I owned the Duke for almost two years, it was my return to motorcycling after more than 30 years without a motorcycle. The Duke was OK because it was light, efficient and nimble but the Street Twin is a thrill to ride even in a Walmart parking lot. In my elderly opinion (I'm 73) any of the Triumph Bonneville's are the most beautiful motorcycles on the road today matched with a wonderful sound, comfort and ride quality. In contrast, my son owns a BMW S1000RR with 205 hp and amazing electronics. I rode it, I appreciate the technology and crazy power, but I wouldn't trade my Street Twin for anything. I'm retired, but everyday my hour or two of riding the Street Twin is the best part of my day.

I bought a 2022 Gold Line Street Twin. I live in the foothills of Southern California and have no problem roaming the hillsides. Also, the freeways are no problem. The bike is light, responsive and very agile. The paint scheme is unique and gives a vintage look to the traditional Bonneville look. Paid a premium for the model but it was worth it. Only change I made was the mirrors. Went to bar end which gives me complete view of the traffic following me. Comfortable "cushy" seat for those long rides. Over my life time this is my 8th motorcycle (not all at the same time). The exhaust sound and the "burble" is very pleasant but not too loud to be obnoxious. I do not agree the Street Twin is an "entry level" bike. It is a 900cc machine with the premium quality that Triumph provides in each and every bike they produce. I have no idea what an "entry level" bike is. This is a premium "Old School" naked bike. As the British say: "THe Street Twin has plenty of GRUNT." Considering all my years of riding I would strongly recommend Triumph Bonneville Street Twin for an effortless smile generating motorcycle adventure.

I grew up in the states during the 1960's. I rode a BSA 650 Lightning once and a Rocket III for one Summer that belonged to my brother in law, but I have never owned a Triumph or a BSA. I've owned many motorcycles over the years, mostly Japanese bikes and four Harleys. I curretnly have my Harley for sale. They ride loke a dump truck. I have always been drawn to the Bonnevilles mainly the T100 for their style. I love the peashooter exhaust and the total look, but after wactching many videos on the Street Twin, now called the Speed Twin 900 I've decided that's the one I for me. There are several reasons I decided on the Speed Twin 900. One, 900cc is all I need and a five speed gearbox is fine with me and will serve me well for the type of riding I do. I like the fork gaiters. I've had bikes before and at 20,000 miles needed new fork seals, the fork gaiters will proect the fork tubes and therefore I won't need to replace the fork seals. I also like the way the upswept megaphone exhaust system allows you to make chain adjustments and change the rear tire without having to remove the silencers. And the cast wheels allow you to run tubeless tires. I know the T100 and T120 has to run spokes and peashooter exhaust to look right , but I'll take a Speed Twin 900. I already have my Harley for sale and if I sell it by Spring I hope to have my first Triumph in my gargae in the Spring, a red Triumpj Speed Twin 900. Wish me luck. Thanks for the video. Ride safe and enjoy every journey.

As a Tracer 900 owner you would think I would be underwhelmed by a "mere" 64 ponies but I couldn't have been more wrong, I absolutely loved it when I had a demo ride! My next bike for sure, but please, Triumph, can we have some nicer colours, the red on the previous model was much nicer in my opinion. And will an enterprising aftermarket supplier please make a proper full front mudguard, one that doesn't need an extender? The modern fashion of shortie ones is bloody ridiculous!

Excellent video! I just accidentally got a Street Twin. Was browsing at a local dealer and a 2022 Gold line was sitting there. I owned a 883, HD Sportster, 750 BMW GS adventure bike, and a 350 BMW Adventure bike… The BMW too tall for me.. and always felt uncomfortable in short turns and slow speeds. Ive got a short stature. The HD Sportster was great, sound look and low seat but it felt very heavy and hard to maneuver in tight turns… I Love my Triumph 900 Street Twin!!!! It fits, it’s got great torque, and superb maneuverability!!’ EVERYTHING ABOUT THE 900 TWIN… is better than all the above mentioned bikes for me!!! I absolutely love it!! The Torque is Amazing… so so fun and functional. If you need to get out of the way of traffic… the twin moves safely and quickly ahead of the congestion and traffic! POWER WHEN AND HOW YOU NEED IT!!! It’s my Motorcycle for LIFE!!! I will never get any other bike! The Scrambler is nice but doesn’t maneuver like the Twin!! My Review!!! SUPERB!!!!!

Great review! The spec sheet for the 900 twins doesn't do these bikes justice. Only when you ride them to you really see how brilliant they are. I went for the Street Scrambler as it's ergonomically perfect for me at 5'10". The engine is so much fun and sounds fantastic. For me, the suspension on these is tailor-made for our crappy British roads. Guaranteed grin with every ride!

I’m interested that you say it’s not a tourer, is that maybe due to the fact most people tour on adventure bikes these days? In my early twenties I rode my old bonnie to Corsica and back, coming back via the Pyrenees. I’ve happily ridden my current Street Twin on the NC500 and all across Europe, as far North as Svalbard and as far South as Brindisi, with the factory screen, a rack and the factory panniers I find her a joy to tour on. A friend has just crossed Canada on one and regularly tours the Rockies. She’s an incredibly adaptable bike and part of the joy of touring her is the ease of riding you described, on the country lanes near my house she’s a joy, and when I want to go somewhere she copes beautifully with motorways until I get to the fun places. Possibly the only bike you ever need? I’m 60 now and my next bike will be another Street Twin, I also have a RE Classic 350, and she’s a good tourer if you have a lot of time.

Triumph are making a big deal about 10k service intervals. That's fine if you do 10k per year because, unless I am totally wrong, the service interval is 10k OR every year whichever comes sooner. And the dealer will change the oil at 1 year regardless of miles as oil degrades with time. If you want to keep warranty or get pcp you need to factor in the cost of a yearly service even if you do the average 3k miles per year

Good review. I am torn between a Trident 660 and this model. I am in Thailand and the price difference between them is about 1,850 GBP. I really like torque having had an 1100 GS and a Buell Ulysses [the best bike I have ever ridden], so maybe a Street Twin would be better, but the Trident pulls from low down, too. I'll have to test ride the pair of them at Triumph Chiang Rai. There is no need for anything faster in Thailand. At the moment, I have a KTM 390 Duke which I will keep.

I have the 2021 T100 Bonneville and love it, it has the 900cc engine as well and more than enough power for riding a mixture of British roads with good fuel economy, of course better then the 1200cc versions so cheaper to run. Still ride around with a big grin. The one downside to these types of bike is the cleaning if you happen to ride on wet or damp country roads, they do get covered in grime in all the hard to access places, and may take 2 hours to get clean again.

Also the St twins riding position is easier on the wrists and lower back on a longer ride. To summarise, if you want to go hell for leather everywhere get the speed twin. If you want something a little less full on, but with lots of addictive torque and way cheaper do what I did. My twin, at 58yrs is my last new bike. Its a keeper.

Hi Geoff, yes, go for the later model, I owned a 2017 street twin for three years and had numerous problems, mainly electrical. There were also gearbox issues with the early models, which should now be fixed. The street twin is also very heavy which sometimes caused problems when manoeuvring. So for a lot of folk, riding, maybe only 3k annually, they will still have to have the annual service carried out on their bikes, to keep the service history intact, otherwise, as we know, the second hand value will be worthless... What a world we've been led into. !! 😢

The only big problem with this bike is its too damn low. Its alredy not a big bike and thats fine, but common Triumph, 765mm seat height….. And as we‘re already Talking, change the front to 17“ and give it propper tires. Besides that its a lovely bike (i had one for some years)

12L fuel tank ... how many times have to stop within 150 kilometers? i dont understand why dont they put a 14L tank ?

  • @surdzo

With fuel consumption of 4l/100km you’re going to get about 300km range out of that 12l tank. On a naked bike you’ll appreciate that stop on fuel station after 3h of riding 😉

At 60miles per UK gallon(4.5L) you'll get 200km per 9L & 215-220km per 10Liters of fuel leaving 2L in the tank. Riding slow will increase distance to about 64mpg (105km).So be able to do 200-225km per 10L depending on how you ride with 2L in tank to stop crap getting into fuel system leaving 500ml-1L for emergency & still 1L in tank to stop crap getting into fuel system which fuel pumps are sensitive to bad fuel, sludge etc.

Great review, but I’m a little sick of the term “ entry level” .

Haha, trust us we don't like to use the term 'entry level' as the bike is that good it doesn't seem like it! but we gotta do what we gotta do 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

@@BikeMatters I suppose I don’t see it as entry level, the Speed Twin , T100, and the T120 are all very different bikes. I think all of the models stand alone.

I know Triumph say 10,000 miles for a service, which is good, but seeing as Triumph also say 10k or yearly, which ever comes 1st, then having 10,000 miles is a bit meaningless as most riders do not cover that in 3 years!

Wait, a 900 doesn't have much power? There must be something wrong with your machine then. Not! Ya, these are quite fast, but no, they won't beat The Hyabusa.

Love everything about this bike, except the measly 64 horsepower. You'd think that Triumph could easily get 90 horsepower out of a 900cc engine.

Test rode this bike and absolutely hated it. Rear suspension is soggy and wallows all over the road. Engine is gutless and even the riding position feels poor. Just didn't connect with this bike at all.

@@BikeMatters might try the speed twin but I understand this has the same suspension set up so I doubt if this will work either. I'll stick to my Ninja for now..... what I don't understand is how any reviewer could say this bike is fun to ride.... very misleading.
