2020 Triumph Street Twin First Ride Review
The 2020 Triumph Street Twin brings Bonneville heritage to life in this friendly parallel twin.
Motorcycles have very different characters. Where the Indian Scout Bobber Sixty might have a rough-and-rugged sort of attitude, something like the Ducati Streetfighter V4 S straddles the line of edgy ruthlessness. While both those types of machines serve their purposes, there is just something about a gregarious standard motorcycle, like the 2020 Triumph Street Twin, that seems so right almost all the time.
Upon riding the Street Twin, there’s an immediate congenial relationship with the bike, as if reuniting with an old friend whose friendship has been easily rekindled after some time apart. The 900cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine delivers steady, usable power across its five gears with plenty of torque in the low to midrange and a long-stretching fifth. Although vibrations can be felt in the pegs, when the digital tach hits 5,500 rpm that feeling does not make its way into the rubber-mounted handlebars. The Triumph’s gearbox and wet, multiplate assist clutch are velvety during gear changes-quick, precise, and effortless. This paired with a predictable throttle response with the help of ride-by-wire tech ultimately makes the ride controlled, comfortable, and engaging. Thanks to its Cycle World measured torque of 55.6 pound-feet at 3,700 rpm, the Street Twin is just as happy to keep the pace with city traffic as it is to leave the stoplights behind and hit the twisties.
Like any friendship, however, things can get a little heated; after riding for about 40 minutes engine heat toasts the right shin.
Curving roads are where smiles are stretched and a $9,300 check-funds permitting-is ready to be signed and delivered. The Street Twin’s responsiveness, confident handling, and torquey character in tight switchbacks or undulating sweepers makes it a stand-out machine. The tubular steel cradle chassis helps maintain a confidence-inspiring and stable line throughout each turn and exits can be left smoothly as a result of that responsive throttle.
Suspension is well-balanced; the front has a planted front-end feel in the switchbacks even though compression on the 41mm KYB fork is a little on the softer side with rebound returning somewhat quickly. KYB twin shocks' compression is slightly stiffer and rebound is on the quick side causing a very slight buck up out of the seat when encountering sharp bumps. However, the rear tire maintains good contact with the road despite your rear leaving the seat, and the Street Twin settles its CW-measured 477 pounds with predictable stability into each turn.
The Street Twin’s braking is handled by a Brembo four-piston caliper in the front and Nissin two-piston caliper at the rear, both ABS equipped. The Brembo four-piston caliper, which was introduced for the 2019 MY, is easily modulated and clamps down with a solid bite onto the 310mm single disc. While it gets the job done, a little more pressure than expected is needed for the rear brake lever to relay commands to the single-piston Nissin caliper paired to a 255mm single disc.
That long seat has a plushness and is comfortable for hours of riding, but when long-distance soreness does start to take effect there is generous seat space to move around on. That space also contributed to comfortable two-up riding. I put my husband on the back, and he reported that the Twin’s seat was roomy and its stepped design allowed for more visibility over my helmet as well. He did say that he would have preferred knurled metal pegs over the stock rubber-covered ones. The pilot’s peg grip was not a problem for me though, but the placement does position my feet and calves up slightly, making it a little tight for my 32-inch inseam. I would imagine anyone with slightly shorter legs, however, would be happy with the location. My 6-foot height usually brings some compromises. The handlebar placement ensures an upright riding position for cruising with enough usable leverage for turns.
With its $9,300 price tag the Street Twin offers Triumph’s high-quality fit and finish. Triumph’s reputation for a well-put-together motorcycle is not betrayed by one of its least-expensive models. The clutch lever, brake lever, and brake pedal are sturdily mounted. The brushed aluminum detailing gives it a clean classy look while the upswept 2-into-2 exhausts, fork gaiters, and round rearview mirrors nod to retro-classic styling.

Cycle World, more of this style of review, please. I like her straightforward "All Business" presentation. I owned a Street Twin a few years ago and agree with most of her opinions. Cheers.
Wow, loved that review! Best motorcycle review I’ve ever watched on KZread. Straight forward and informative, just the way I like. I’m considering the Street Twin and this review helped more in five minutes than other much longer reviews ever have! And I just subbed because of her. 😎
This is a perfect everyday commuter with some serious style built in. I traded in my old GSX-S1000 for this and have no regrets. Loving the seat height and ergonomics. Much more usable power for everyday situations and still pulls like a freight train plus it sounds absolutely amazing with the stock cans. I do miss a 6th gear but it still cruises at 100km/h @ 3200rpm and its perfectly comfortable and unhurried. Overall fuel consumption is great too at about 22km/l average.
Nice, no-BS overview. Thank-you. 👍 🏍

I have the 2020 in jet-black ! Best bike I ever had !!
I already have one, but this is the best review I’ve seen so far. Keep up the good work!! Thank you!
Nice review Sarah! You pretty much covered all the aspects of the vehicle in great detail. Appreciate it!
The only 3 problems you have are irrelevant. You figure out the kickstand in about five minutes. Put the gas cap on top of the pump and don’t forget it. Gas gauge takes a couple of minutes to register full after refueling ? You just filled it up. I’m pretty sure you have enough fuel to get through it.
I bought this bike as my first bike about a month ago. With nothing to really compare it to I do love it. Two things I’d change is the peg to seat distance which is a little cramped after a while, and the top end torque, but it is fully capable of cruising at 80 mph. Just don’t try to pass. It looks awesome, sounds awesome, and I love it more every time I ride it.
My kind of Triumph for someone with a 26” inseam
More of this please need more reviews of this caliber with honest approach to reviews. Enjoy Serena McKnight and all the pieces she has worked on great journalism.

Love the video, great explanation in detail about the bike. Thanks so much.
Every Triumph I have ever ridden (several) all take a couple of minutes to register the new fuel level after you fill them. The wilder you ride leaving the gas station the longer it takes to register the fuel. I think it is taking an average over time so it doesn't show the sloshing on the fuel gauge.
I just loved the way you handled a 210+ Kg bike in the Twistys, I am always unsure while I hit the bends...Cheers
Awesome video.I think I'm gonna get this one. I love the retro feel and minimalistic look it gives. Not too over-bearing on the eyes.

I've the "old" 2016 Street Twin. This machine was made for me. I'm happy with it. And imo the old one looks better than the new 2020 version ...especially the wheels. But there is one thing that annoys me: We have the year 2020 and the machine is equiped with stone age H4 dim light... why no modern LED?

@@katana258 I don't think so: A new Street Twin has a stock price of 9.050,00 € here in Germany, but no option for modern LED light in the configuator and that is not realy cheap in my eyes. For example a Royal Enfield Inteceptor 650 costs only 6.530,00 € stock. Or a Honda CMX500 Rebel costs 6.499,00 € AND has modern LED light. They are much cheaper bikes.
My dream bike 🙂❤️

Great review, got both this (2017), and the Strom. Agree with everything you stated. After many years of riding I've came to conclude that the ST is the best urban bike out there. LED, simple screwed gas cap and a few other mods make this bike a true beauty and function.

Great Bike!😘 Nice Review!😎
Great looking bike. I might go check one out soon.
Beautiful bike but I'll keep my Kawasaki W800 Street (looks a lot like this black version Bonnie, I think both look stunning). At least it has a hinged, flip up, gas cap and LED lighting. Those complaining about cast wheels instead of stainless steel spokes, I agree - looks wise especially with nice alloy rims, but cast wheels can use tubeless tires where most classic looking bikes with stainless steel spokes need tubed tires (yes I know some adventure touring bikes have tubeless spoked wheels).
Love mine, it's perfect here in the UK.
My wife has the 2019 worst thing about the bike is only having 5 gears. Surpised she missed this. Otherwise great bike for female riders.
Wowwee. Fantastic review.

good review thx. Could I add that they ride just like a 1970's bike. Oh the engine's bigger and it has electric thingys but it is a 1970s bike . . and that's fine except for the 2021 price.

When you feel the need to swap your existing tyres, I recommend the "Michelin Pilot Road 4" radial tyres. I have them on my 2009 Bonneville SE, which replaced the factory Metzelers. the difference was like "night"and "day". I have never lost grip on cornering in both dry and wet road surface conditions, and they track and ride well over traffic painted surfaces and longitudinal road repairs and light rail lines. The tyre wear is very good, having close to 30000 km on my current set, with no history of punctures either.

Now…. That was a good review.
Didn't hear her mention the lighting. (or lack of) My 2016 Street Twin doesn't have any forward running lights and to me it's a huge safety issue. How hard would it have been for Triumph to add those? Does the later model have these?
Very good looking. Would ride.

I like everything about this thing except for the weight. Too bad but I may overlook it at some point. I currently have a z400 for around town. I’ve been looking at one of these for a few years. I love the looks and sound and don’t like the looks of the z400. Maybe the z400rs will make me open my wallet when it finally shows up. Until then I’ll keep hoping the street twin goes on a diet.
How does Triumph manage to make these beautiful retro style bikes so dang heavy?? I love the look, the finish is impeccable, but are they using cast iron frames or lead pistons??
@JohnnyXoz

476lb isn't heavy for a 900 considering the frame is steel, I have an all alloy 600 sport-bike that weighs 436lb. Remove the cat and the stock cans of the ST etc and it'll be closer to 450
What is the price in India

Dilemma: ST Versus t100. Wich would you choose and why? Thanks
@rbattson7171
3 жыл бұрын
Aaron Rodriguez. The street twin is the more contemporary of the two bikes. The tell, being the cast wheels and the raised rear portion of the seat. In contrast to the T100 having spokes and a flatter, bench like seat. But also the street twin has noticeably more power. Though the latest line up of these two bikes, this has now been addressed. So your choice now is down to cost and the looks of these bikes alone. Ride safe. 🙂

Ah.. my first thought was to say something mean. I went looking through the comments to see if anyone else picked up on how she said "now" a lot. Honestly, that's on me. I shouldn't belittle someone else for a being a little nervous and using filler words. I say "Um uh eh" in every sentence I speak and I don't even have camera in my face and a loose script to follow. I have a 2019 Street Twin and I couldn't put together half as good of a video as this. This was a damn solid review of the bike, specs, and overall ride. I feel bad that my first thought is to criticize, but I'm the one that needs to change. I hope to see her do more reviews later. Subbed.
In five minutes, Serena started 11 sentences with the word "Now". I think this could be a new drinking game. Anyway, I love the Triumph Street Twin, but at $9,550 they are bit expensive. I see some dealers still have new 2019 models for $8,500 so that might be an option.
