2021 Tacoma TRD Off Road ESP-08: 1000 Miles Break In Oil Change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is 1000 mile break in oil change still valid for a modern new vehicle? Well, I do not have the answer for that, but I just want to do it just like for all my other new cars, for peace of mind and to learn how to change oil for 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma (2016+)

Use a 20oz soda bottle on the filter housing drain adapter. Push it straight up firmly using a soda bottle. It will catch the oil because the adapter fits into the bottle opening. No mess. Thanks for the video

I’ve mastered what I call the “quick spin and run away method” when removing the oil drain plug on my Tacoma. Slowly unwind the drain plug but push it up until you feel only a few threads hanging on. Then with a flick of your wrist, spin the drain plug and move your hand out of the way.

I just did mine today at 1300miles. I figured it’s good practice and can’t hurt. The only problem I had was the synthetic oil is so thin it hit my drain pan and splashed out all over my garage floor. What a mess. Live and learn. Thanks for the video

I agree with your philosophy of break in and changing the oil at 1k. Nothing has changed with regards to engine part wear other than maybe tighter tolerances. I think it should be required on lease agreements as well. If we’re really trying to “save the planet” we should be engineering and caring for longevity.

A little advice from my past experience with the cartridge filters on these. If you can find an old piece of hose that you can fit onto the filter drain insert, it'll save you from getting oil everywhere. Just pull it off when you're done and re-use the section of hose for your next change.

I just did mine and couple of tips for you for the next time. 1. 0w20 comes out fast like water. Leave the fill plug and dipstick on/in. This creates a vacuum and makes the oil flow out slower. Once slowed down, then remove them. Helps with splashing. 2. For the plastic filter drain tube, put your thumb on the bottom covering the little spout and push upwards. No oil will flow as long as you keep your thumb on it. When ready and with pan under, take your thumb off. No mess.

You can also put the draining tube into a small coca cola bottle. Tube won't go in. Just push the bottle up and the filter oil will go inside the bottle with no mess.

I’m with you. Did mine at 1,500 kilometres. This can be a controversial subject but I’m like you. It’s a small price to pay for piece of mind and getting rid of any small particles after break in period. Also, Don’t buy parts online as there are so many cheap knock-off’s. stick to Toyota dealer or legitimate online Toyota dealers.

Awesome video. I am right there with you. I bought the MotiveX set for oil and it's the best. I replaced the existing engine oil drain plug with a Dimple stainless steel neodymium magnetic drain when I picked it up from the dealer with 4 miles on it a few months ago, topped off what came out. I am changing it for the first time today at 700 miles. I expect some sub 20 micron pieces on the magnet. I also changed the rear differential and manual transmission oil at 500 miles, there was a moderate amount of shavings on the factory diff magnet, and the manual transmission oil was surprisingly dark for the mileage. I added a magnetic diff fill plug and also a magnetic drain and fill plug for the manual transmission as the fluid slosh around a lot and why not. Let's make these things last 400k miles.

Just changed my 23' Tacoma's oil at 1k. Strange that the OEM oil filter kit (04152-YZZA1) doesn't come with a drain plug gasket. Also, the small o-ring wasn't in the filter when I removed it. Very strange. My oil was quite black and smelled of fuel. I'm sending it off to Blackstone for testing. Glad I decided to replace the break-in oil. After reading comments, I realize that I didn't add any oil to the new filter and must of had a dry start (ouch) but I won't make that mistake again. If you're changing your own oil, I 100% recommend the Motivx Tacoma kit. It worked beautifully. Although that 0-20 is like water and it's hard to keep from making a mess. Thanks for the video.

2022 Tacoma TRD...Way late to the game here but for what it's worth. The "dealer" said the oil in the engine is a special break-in oil. I was told that it will need to be changed at 12,000 miles. You can't make this up, lol. Anyway, After begging them to change it at 6,000 and being refused, I took it elsewhere. You see, they make you pay for a package in Southeast USA and it included 3 oil changes for $600...what a deal (NOT). Anyway, it turns out this specific engine and oil combo do not need to be changed but once every 10k miles. So, I only have 12k on the vehicle after nearly 2-years. I think I am going to push for 7,500mi at the next oil change...probably 1-year from now. No, I never did get a single oil change from the dealer, because they refused until a year had passed. They just make you pay the $600 and there is no way around it.

Your truck, your money, you do what YOU want to do. 1,000 mile break in sounds great. When we rebuilt engines years ago in my younger years we would go with oil and filter at 100 miles, then another 500 oil filter, then another 500 then normal 3,000 mile oil changes. We would add one quart of GM EOS with the first 100 mile change and the next 500 mile change.

Yakfish Taco Thanks for your video . I am no stranger to getting my hands dirty, I have been working on ALL my cars since 1964 .These days, I try to work smarter and cleaner . I have a '21 Taco Off Road with 2K miles and I refuse to use that ridiculous Toyota oil filter canister . Scotty Kilmer recommended an adapter that converts the stock canister to a spin on filter, made by Baxter Performance, located in Spokane, WA. Yeah, it's pricey @ $219., but it's CNC precision made and I think over the long run, you will really be glad you won't ever have to cock around with those messy canisters . I will also be replacing the stock oil pan drain plug with a " FUMOTO" drain valve . Just unscrew stock drain plug, and screw in the Fumoto into the pan . Once installed, your next oil change will be a delight, no tools needed, just turn the little lever and quickly and cleanly, drain oil, and they're about $25-30 , they make those for all cars and trucks .I have no affiliation with either company . BTW, I'm in the process of also changing my front and rear differential gear lube as well, using Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 .

FYI, the plastic fitting used to drain the oil filter, that's actually made so you can put a hose on the end so you can drain it directly into an oil pan vs taking an oil shower. So take that to home depot and find a hose that will slip on it.

Honestly, you don’t need to buy Toyota branded filters. Just find out who manufactures those filters, and buy that brand, and save a few bucks. For example, Mobil 1 is Toyota’s OEM oil. It’s the oil used at factory and sold in Toyota dealerships. It’s just branded with a Toyota PN and label. Just a tip to save some coin.

7K mile interval here. Pennzoil ultra platinum use a gatorade bottle when inserting the oil filter housing drain adapter to reduce spills. I changed mine at 1.5K miles and had about a grape size amount of metal mud residue inside filter housing corner. change your oil to 5W30 synthetic if you plan to keep truck forever or keep using 0w20 if you plan on keeping until 400k miles.

  • @drbarchitect

I've had a 1993 Helix, 2012 Tacoma and 2016 4-Runner. The oil changes on all these have been completely different and seem to vary greatly with regard to the oil filter access. The '93 oil filter was through a little door you accessed in the passenger wheel well. Overall pretty easy, remove two bolts and the panel slide out of the way. The 2012 was on top of the engine and completely accessible. An absolute dream to get to. The 2016 was a complete nightmare. You had to completely remove the skid plate to access the filter. Before you could remove the skid plate, a deflector valance in front of that had to come off. Over the years the ten or so bolts would eventually rust and seize and then you've got to get out the vice grips work out the seized bolt and buy replacements. Why does Toyota go from such technician friendly designs like a top engine filter to one you have to remove half of the under protection to get to. Completely frustrating to perform regular maintenance.

Maybe put a hose on that filter drain plug. Also I think they make adaptors for the filter so you can use the conventional screw on type filters.

On my 2018 Tacoma I changed the oil every 5000 MI. On my 2021 I will do the same however I have just under 3000 miles in the last 6 months

Thx for the grt video. I just purchased my '23 Off Road. Only have 180KM on it and debating when I want to perform the first oil server. Definitely not waiting for long manufacturers 8,000KM. I was thinking somewhere around 1,000 - 1,500KM. Not sure if I should stretch that out just a little longer or not

I changed my oil at around 3k on my 2020 TRD off road. How are you enjoying the truck? I love mine and especially living up here in the PNW, these vehicles are very capable and I hope to drive mine for a very long time. The one regret I might have is getting the short bed version over the long bed, mainly because I want to sleep in the back of it sometimes when I get the topper. Where did you get your topper and for how much if you don’t mind me asking?

Hi, great to hear from another PNW'er. Don't mind you asked at all. I got my truck cap from "LEER Truck Accessories" here in Oregon City, They are the local Leer dealer, good place and legit pricing. I paid $2475 for what I had including the Thule tracker tracks. Hope that helps, enjoy your Taco :)

I greatly appreciate the video but this video shows me that I would definitely rather take my Taco to a dealer/shop. The real kicker was when you got the oil all over your hand🤣. That would be me for sure, AND I would also spill my coffee and probably spill the drain pan on my nice white concrete 🤔

Just got my 22 and thank you for the video. Worst design of filter I've ever seen in 50 years of auto work. Special tools, multiple O-rings etc. They offer oil change at 5k but will take in early. THANKS AGAIN WELL DONE!!

Always do my first and most important oil change before 1K, very smart plan. Oil is cheapest maintenance for new vehicle.Had to argue this with my first free oil change on my 2020 TRD OR prem.PS next time wear gloves lol

If this was 1985 , I would agree. Im at 100k with my 16, and my 09 had 200k when I sold it . Never had an issue changing oil when Toyota recommended. Just adding my experience . But its your truck so you get to pick.

You should always pour oil (around a cup or so for the Tacoma) onto the new oil filter after installing the filter into the oil filter housing unit. You want to do this to avoid a dry start.

I bought a 23 with 6 miles on it. I've checked the oil periodically and it seems to read high. Considering how everyone says the dipsticks are terrible, I hoped it was properly filled from the factory. Today I needed peace of mind so I did a complete oil change. It was overfilled by around 30oz from the factory. Has anyone heard of that?
