Great video. The best I've seen about 3-Gen Tacoma oil change. I've done a million oil changes to all kinds of vehicles (and landmowers!). At my age, I just go to my local Jiffy. They are locally-owned and its a quick in-out deal, and I don't have to worry about oil messes, back aches and oil recycling. BTW, Toyota gives me a couple of free oil changes, but the first one was at 10,000 miles.

I too am going to change my oil myself at 1000 miles, but I think it’s going to be closer to 1080. Just went down to my local Toyota dealer (Servco Mapunapuna here in Honolulu) and got an OEM filter, drain plug gasket and 7 quarts of oil for $72. My first service in the free 2yr/24,000mi period is at 5000 mikes and I have always heard of engine builders, OEM’s (prior to 2000) recommending the first oil change after the break-in period. I also have had my 2023 Tacoma TRD Iff Road ACLB (Access Cab Long Bed) for about 2 months as I just bought it 27 January 2024 and it’s 16 March 2024. I also plan on keeping this truck till I stop driving (turning 48 this year) and then pass it down to my first born. Wish my dad still had his 1995.5 Tacoma Xtra Cab V6 4x4 5-spd manual 2manual locks and roll down windows. He sold it to an acquaintance of my sister in 2017 when one cylinder lost compression and he didn’t want to rebuild the engine, clutch and brakes. So he got a 2017 Tacoma SR DCSB (Double Cab Short Bed) 4x2 4-cylinder auto. Looks like tomorrow is oil change day for us, but we don’t have ramps or jack stands so we will be squishing under. Thanks for the in-depth video. I also enjoy The Car Care Nut’s videos.

The chin spoiler / air dam is there for gas mileage. I left mine in place because I want more mpg. Toyota engineers put it there for a reason. You won't find them putting on a part for a needless reason especially since it adds to the cost of the build. With oil changes I just flex it enough to slip my ratchet extension in there so no need to remove the piece. I'd sell my Mother for better gas mileage so the air dam stays put. Imho it looks fine.

When that filter fits right , you know it’s the genuine filter. If they slide on real easy it’s a fake.
Put the bolts back in where the air dam used to be so youll never lose them.

Well done my friend;! I need to do mine, what was your reason for changing it at 1000 miles?

well it gets that initial engine wear out of the oil and doesnt recirculate, a lot of people do it and i thought why not haha

Car care nut mentioned their could be residual metal shavings in the engine from manufacturing. So that 1,000 break in period is a good time to get that out. I wasn’t aware of the 1,000 mark when I did my 2022 Highlander at 5k. I saw a few small pieces of metal shavings in the filter. He was right.
I changed my 2023's oil with 100 miles on it because the dipstick seemed to be reading high. I know these dipsticks are terrible, but I needed peace of mind. I did a complete oil change today, and it was about 30oz overfilled. Has anyone heard of this? I bought it with 6 miles on it. It's a 3.5 SR5. Thanks

@@TomDobyMowerRepair Have you ever seen oil seepage around the rim of your oil filter where the plastic meets the metal? I have some oil that keeps appearing there and it's torqued to 20 foot pounds. I have 110 miles on this truck and it's already a headache. Thanks
@7CFlo

@@TomDobyMowerRepair Also, my filter housing seeps oil slightly at the upper base where it meets the metal. It looks like it bubbles oil slightly and there are drips on the inside of the pan. It's torqued to 20 foot pounds. When I put it on, it gets tight with about 1/3 of an inch to go before it meets the metal. Same coming off, it stays tight for a while. It's not cross-threaded like you said but it doesn't feel like my wife's Rav4. That one goes in easy then gets tight right at the end. Could there be a problem with the threads in the metal unit above the filter? I just did the oil at 100 miles and it's seeping. Thanks

Where did you get the filter wrench cap. My old man paid 50 for his from toyota but since i moved i cant seem to find it. Edit: Oh nevermind im at the 5 minute mark 😂

When I put more than high mark I just loosen tha cap half turn to 2 turns depending how much more psi I feel it has calculating the volume and viscosity oil used Ad throttle input response and if the motor feels over pressurized more throttle I give it I gotta let it breathe mama Mia 😂

I would consider using 30 weight oil instead of 20... They use 20 weight for government mandated mileage figures but it will wear out the engine faster
@DBravo29er

Agreed. 20 weight will get you to 200k-250k. 30 weight full synthetic is what gets your engine to 400k+.
You don’t have to take spoiler off to take the skid plate off! My 21 Tacoma gets changed every 5000, and have never touched the spoiler! If you’re a mechanic, why would you take off the spoiler?
Would it be a good idea to put Lucas oil stabilizer in that engine?
Did it say in the owners manual to change the oil at 1000 miles for your first oil change?

1st oil change after break in at 1000 miles. Then every 5,000 miles after that to ensure the engine lasts for a very long time. I heard an engineer for Toyota that helped design this engine who said that you should change the oil every 5,000 miles.
@davidtroupp

@@Oliver-xe3wn you’re probably seeing metallic shavings because you drove the engine too hard during break in. You want to keep RPM’s low during the first 1k.

I changed the oil on my 2023 Tacoma and it has a normal spin on filter. The guys at Toyota must have realized their mistake. :))
The filter setup is just stupid. I hate when manufacturers do this crap. Just design a damn engine with a tried and true spin on canister type filter already. Theres no need to for that convoluted design.
That is some dirty oil for only 1,000 miles.
