I like how Dave in all his videos doesn't make people feel foolish if their not sure what he's saying.
Dam, I wish more motorcycle dealerships had a guy like that in their "service" department.
I did a remote tuning session with Dave back when I had an Indian Scout Bobber that only had preload on the rear shocks. Between the adjustment he helped me walk through along with tire pressure changes and handlebar/controls adjustments, it was like riding a new bike and saved me from spending money on shocks I did not need.

I think this guy got no idea wtf he’s taking about . He says he’s “compressing “the spring , the only think that changes the compression of the spring is the weight of the bike and rider on it . By adjusting pre load you are only adjusting the ride height by extending or retracing the shock . If you were compressing the spring the bike would be LOWER . You can’t adjust the tension of the spring ! He says ride will get stiffer if it’s got more pre load but ride should be softer, it’s up higher in compression stroke where the valving is lighter . 🤷♂️ I have no idea how you could be a suspension tuner and have no grasp on this concept …
Dave set my 09 TripleR when I got it new. Had ridden well over 5k before Dave had did his magic. Totally awesome ride afterwards.

Any idea where i can get the rear seat cover?
Hi Mate! I am new to your channel and this was a nice video. I just wanted to say my height is 168 cm and if i buy a 2017 gsxr1000 or a zx10r/zx6r will i be able to balance them with my both foot or will i have to tip toe? and do u suggest that if i lower the suspension of the bike would i be able to balance with both foot? waiting for your reply :).
Where did you get the Italian flag to block the reflector holes on front tire?
Do you think the rs660 stock rear shock will work for a 155lb guys (no gear)? Or is it still going to need to be replaced? This will be a track day bike.
Ahaha, classic, Dave: “If you like a beating that’s fine, that’s personal, keep that at home”
Where’d you get your tank grips from ??
very nice back plate ... where is it?
Is this Turtle Rock up at Berryessa?
Dave Moss is a genius. Don't understand any of it though!
Wasn't this bike suposed to have adjustable compression in the front apart from rebound and preload?
I am the same weight as you so I’ve gone from 18 clicks out of 21 to 15 of 21 on the front and 2 lines on the preload. And from 8 clicks out of 16 on the rear shock to 4 clicks out and added 2 full turns of preload on the rear which started at 6 lines showing. That’s the same as your setup isn’t it ?
Can you do a video similar to the video of you going over the reasons you sold the s1000rr but for the rs660? I'm looking into buying one but would like to understand the bike better. For example how the power comes in at different rpms.

Great explanations by @DaveMoss, especially the preload and pressures, but in reality this is not voodoo science and ANY rider can easily do this in their garage on any bike they own. I will also second..a lightweight bike with less power is TONS more fun to ride fast than a superbike.

most OEM componets the rebound has an effect on compression as well......am sure the top tier suspension companies have isolated this better or completely but i know my older bikes worked this way. ( think my ohlins TTX had them isolated pretty well )....i love suspension and not a tuner just a fiddler......ever since i tuned mine to perfection " on accident" b4 a race i been fascinated ever since......he seems way too heavy for stock spring especilly if he is faster rider......new shock in the horizon with stiffer spring.......suspension is such a fickle thing but so beautiful when you get it dialed......

I think its a shame that dealers dont offer a tailored suspension set up to the purchaser of a brand new bike, maybe as part of the PDI, they just send them out on whatever the factory technician set it at.

So, back at the end of last year, AP Workshops in the UK worked with K-Tech to produce a new road shock for the RS660. AP are the go to specialist shop for Aprilia in the UK with huge experience of the marque. See the video with AP and K-Tech here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mn-kpqubqLe_nrA.html

@samanthagregoryurich4167
15 күн бұрын
Sounds like it would be fine since you are 40 lbs lighter and they got it set up fine. Bear in mind manufacturers can’t build a bike that has unlimited adjustability and optimized performance as those design goals counteract each other. This bike is definitely biased towards performance over adjustability. They try to find the sweet spot and design both the suspension and rider triangle for the average rider’s size and weight with some range of adjustability on both sides. I have the RS 660 and it’s such a great bike that I wouldn’t think twice about spending a couple hundred dollars on a spring.

@@dry509 I've seen bigger guys on the track with the RS 660 without mods so even on the track it would probably be fine up until the intermediate level (usually red group). For the road, no worries. You would be missing out if you don't do track day though! I'm 170 pounds and have been running the stock settings for 8000 km and thought my bike handled perfectly. After 5 track days, I'm going quite a bit faster so getting to the point where I should probably stiffen it up a bit when I'm going to the track. I'm starting to feel some of the things Dave Moss is talking about and I can see it on my tire wear. Still, the bike gives me enough confidence to out-brake more experienced riders so it can't be very far off in adjustment.

why not just drill a 3/4 in hole in the plastic to access the rebound screw.....think aprilla would have done that from factory actually......clean hole with a grommet covering the edges would look clean and give riders a way to adjust the rebound without taking seat and plastics off......thts insane having to tear bike apart to access a screw for the shock
@CaliMotoTV

You'd think that 😂
I don't mean to sound harsh, I just found your channel and this is the first video I've seen, but I find it strange that someone who seems to have significant experience on a bike and has a good following on a motorcycle based channel would have such little functional knowledge of suspension. Even terms and descriptions. Just seems odd...Like not knowing ANYTHING about setting rear preload, or which way the adjusting perch would need to turn, how that affects static ride height etc. These are very basic concepts.
@morley3810
3 жыл бұрын
@@CaliMotoTV Yeah that's fair. Just that there's not always a Dave around when you live like, pretty much anywhere else in the world. I don't mean you shouldn't use a Dave, but unless you were playing dumb to play up his skill it seemed a bit odd.
Wheel travel at rear is 130 mm so rider sag of 26 mm (your starting point) is only 20 %. I would have left it as is and certainly not added preload.
@paulh9301
3 жыл бұрын
He's bottoming the shock though. I'll choose to add preload too rather than running out of travel at this point. The true answer is aftermarket shock with correct spring rate.
@Bunter1815
3 жыл бұрын
@@paulh9301 the tuner says he can bottom the shock by hand which is very surprising and something the video misses. It's confused also by making damping adjustments at the same time. It's after increasing the damping (maybe it does both compression and rebound like he says) that he says he can no longer bottom by hand. I always set the sag first
@identiticrisis
3 жыл бұрын
@@Bunter1815 That's exactly what happened. Preload was set for sag first. Dave added rebound damping because he was expecting to need it after that change. He did explain it's because it'll be closer to topping out so he's trying to slow it down. The damping adjuster, like other cheap Sachs units, is combined for rebound and compression. So they only wanted extra rebound but got extra compression with it. Hence backing it out again once the tyre showed the compression was too stiff. But the result was still balanced front-to-rear in rebound, so no problem.
@TheAlphaGinger
2 жыл бұрын
So if say you are a lighter rider, say 180lbs, and have not compressed the spring and damper through wear as much, would you still likely need to adjust the rebound on the rear to avoid the double/triple bounce? Has Aprilia set up the RS deliberately soft from factory (meaning high rebound, as Dave talks about "dialing it back" meaning reducing the rebound?). Many reviews of the bike mention the rear shock as the bikes weakest link, just wondering if this is because of the setting and has the setting been a contributing factor to the bearing play (AP Workshops review). Any other owners experienced the bearing play/wear in the shock? Appreciate help, expect my RS660 some time soon and I'm a complete novice on the mechanical front.
I respect all the skill and knowledge but how much of this is really relevant for Street riding where roads surface can vary so much that all your tuning doesn't mean much

@@CaliMotoTV have you ride a trident 660 yet? And what about the tuono 660? I’ve heard a few people say that for all but the highest speeds the tuono is better on road and track because of the front wheel geometry and rake making it extremely flickable. Would love to hear your assessment between the two
Am I the only person here who thinks this guys logic on pre loading a shock is completely wrong ? When you “add preload “ you aren’t compressing the spring “ as he states . You are extending the shock inside of the spring ! Therefor making the bike taller . The spring stays the same as it will only compress by what ever weight is on it . And adding “pre load “ or making ride height taller in rear won’t make it stiffer . It should make it softer if anything as you are now further into the softer part “top” of the suspension stroke where valving etc is softer . He says he’s compressing the speing , that which isn’t possible but if it was he’d be lowering the bike
