2020 Camry TRD at a RACETRACK - Yes, Toyota's Sporty Sedan Will Hold Its Own

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Toyota claims the 2020 #CamryTRD is the sportiest sport sedan to ever be graced by the #Camry nameplate. We borrowed one for a week, and spent some time at Summit Point Raceway's Jefferson Circuit to see if all of the #TRD goodies helped Toyota's claims.

    My buddy has one and he outran my buddy Chris in his 2019 Charger RT 5.7 all The way to 140 miles an hour!!!!! The Camry only weighs about 3500 pounds at 301 horsepower the hemi is almost 4300 pounds with 375 horsepower so power to rate ratio says a lot!

    I just Bought my 2020 Camry TRD 3 days ago,, I love it,,Major upgrade from my 2015 Altima S . I honestly don't care about the inside frills. Yes it is plain on the inside but for $31K you couldn't ask for a better engine and overall performance not to mention the head turning exterior with that sexy spoiler. My car is the Supersonic red color. very happy with it .

    @@r3games1985 When my wife and I were looking for a second family car we were really impressed with the Camry because we had one as a rental when our main car was in the shop. The rental was not a TRD but it had great room, drove well and had the bones to be a real performance car. The wife said our second car hard to be a manual. I was not going to complain. We found a Honda Civic Type R at MSRP and bought it and never looked back. We love that car. If the Camry TRD was a manual, it would have been a serious contender for our second car and we would have saved money but no manual equaled no buy and I know I am not the only family who thinks this way. For a third car we are looking at the GR 86, GR Supra and GR Corolla but the money is not there yet especially in this crazy, lack of leadership driven, economic meltdown we are experiencing.

    I heard with a D3 tune this car has “manual” shifting option which makes it better for track use. Of course you probably won’t see a Camry on a race track very often, but if you want to manually shift, D3 tuning is the way to go

  • @OutMotorsports

    @OutMotorsports

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great to know, thank you for sharing that! We haven't heard of D3 so will have to do some research. The random up/down shifts even in Manual mode were the most frustrating part of the car.

    @@OutMotorsports Pretty much it is the main biggest complaint everyone has of the camry, regardless of trim or engine. My second biggest complaint is the equalization on the stereo. It sucks. Basically all bass is stripped away.

    I shopped the Accord(skimpy, small-ish seats), Acura TLX(a bit pricey for a turbo four) and Mazda6 Turbo(checks all the right boxes) and decided on a Camry XLE(V-6, great seats, priced right). Close to 40 mpg on trips. Quiet, smooth, comfy and built like a Toyota.

    the only thing I wish were options were heated seats and blind spot moniter and remote start . when I ordered my TRD I was told I had it had remote start and BSM but im still happy with the car. definitely way better handling then an xse especially when driven back to back!

  • @OutMotorsports

    @OutMotorsports

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, I would have appreciated those as well. I think the lack of options is three-fold... weight savings, cost savings (use the money spent on options for performance bits instead) and leaving a solid reason for someone to upgrade to a V6 XSE or XLE. It's great to see this TRD with honest performance pieces bolted to it instead of a basic body kit, Toyota put forward a really solid effort.

    Nice car, little tip... you aren’t going to want to brake in a corner. You’re splitting traction between cornering and braking. Reach your cornering speed prior to entry and you’ll get a better run.

  • @OutMotorsports

    @OutMotorsports

    You're correct, with a caveat - trail-braking (braking while adding steering input) can be performed to shift weight forward and force the car to rotate. The technique is how you go faster once you've figured out the "brake, turn, throttle" order of operations. That said... trail-braking effectively requires tires, suspension, and alignment that allow such a maneuver to really work effectively. Most street cars will be better off with one input at a time, it's rare to find something that rewards trail-braking with a factory-everything setup.

    Omg every single car reviewer who has reviewed the TRD talks about the red background on the head unit. YOU CAN CHANGE THE COLOR TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT OTHERS IN SETTINGS. That’s what I did when I bought my TRD back in November. Please spread the word to every other youtube reviewer so I don’t have to hear them say the same thing anymore. Having said all that: I like the red background.

  • @OutMotorsports

    So my complaint wasn't so much with the head unit (I found that customization pretty quickly) but with the rest of the button backlighting. Toyota changed the main gauges to red but left the remainder (climate buttons and screen, steering wheel buttons, window switches, etc) in that icy blue. I understand the effect they were going for, but it could be better executed given the scientific reasoning behind red backlighting.

    I'd lean toward the Veloster N unless you really need the space of something like a Camry. The Camry TRD is good *for what it is* but the Veloster N is really, really great and not just "for a Hyundai" or "for a hatchback" or whatever. If you like the V-N but want something a little nicer, you can trade some sportiness for comfort and get a GTI.
