I remember watching this again... This season has gave birth to a legend... Fast forward to today... Maru is now your GS7 champion

One of the best series I've ever seen ... Amazing, both Dark and Maru.

That game 3 just leaves you thinking wow Maru is fucking good at this game.

I have to just drop my jaw at how Maru managed to survive with Dark's overwhelming attacks, at times, in games 5 and 6. The very best TvZ I've seen in a long time. Zerg is still the strongest race, but it's a testament to how tremendously skilled Maru is as a terran. His consistent finals appearances lately exemplifies how amazing he is overall. Had to replay some of the inexplicable moves he makes. Terran is clearly the weakest race. No doubt, practicing with Rogue has helped him become a complete terran. His late game terran has overcome TY's late game. Dark is a damn scary late game Zerg but not quite up to par with Rogue, yet. I appreciate his creativity. Hope Maru can win his first GSL finals because it's a long time coming, and it'd be well deserved. Watched him for a long time and seen him come close but not get over the hump a few times. Reminds me a little of Byun's late run in 2016, and how he got in the zone winning the GSL and then Blizzcon. Of course, Byun did it teamless which was unprecedented made it that much more impressive. Byun, Maru, and TY are my favorite players. Love watching Byun's passion and emotion.

That was by far the most amazing games of SC2 I have ever seen!!

Absolutely amazing matches. Probably among the best matchups ever played in the history of Starcraft 2.

It's interesting to look at games 5 and 6 as responses to games 1 and 5 of the WESG Finals series between these same players. Maru has done very well in the super-late game against other top Zergs by trading his high-tech army efficiently with their high-tech army and waiting for them to run out of resources (see e.g. Maru-Solar at Katowice, or Maru-Serral at WESG). The last Zerg to beat Maru, Rogue, did so by getting creative in the early game instead. In the WESG Finals, Dark turned this on its head in the games that went super-late (1 and 5) by expanding super-aggressively and constantly harassing Maru with lower-tech units (and swarm hosts) to keep him from securing more expansions, so that Maru ran out of resources first even though his high-tech army was trading efficiently. That's one reason why Maru decided to roll the dice on double proxy rax twice to close out that series. In game 5 of this series, Maru was able to secure his expansions more easily because the map is set up to allow a left-half-vs-right-half setup, but Maru also committed even more to the high-tech army. Once he built up his endgame army, he was almost tolerant of large numbers of SCVs getting killed, because his army was trading so efficiently that he didn't have to rebuild everything all the time like Dark did. So even though Maru's income was much lower for a large portion of the late game (just click through at various times and see how often Dark is doubling or tripling his mineral income), it didn't really matter--if anything, it meant he was mining out slower than Dark. This mitigated the effect of Dark's harassment with low-tech units. And in game 6, where the map setup with quadrants would allow Dark to pursue the WESG strategy more easily, Maru recognizes this and expands even more aggressively with the hidden base gamble.

Only on the first game, if the rest of this series is anywhere near as awesome as this I'm a happy bunny.

People who are claiming that terran is op right now forget that no other terran has been doing well recently. No terran other than Maru has performed well in Iem pyeongchang, iem katowice, wesg and gsl. People criticising Maru need to acknowledge the fact that Maru is just better than everyone else at this moment. Anyway his micro and macro are legendary. This season he has just found his stride like Innovation did last season or Byun did in 2016. I'll be rooting for Maru in the finals. #playlikemaru

@ Farjad Zaman in last game of the series, zerg had to spend 50% more ressouces than terran to stand a chance. maru is a great player i agree. anyway - terran is broken since the game was released in 2010. THIS and people like you are the reason SC2 has died.

On the other hand in the earlier game muta control was just crappy, comparing to old drg or nestea games. Zergs this days are over-reliant on new imba perks like early free droplords...

Im going to tell you what I tell all the other people that say nonsense comments like this. YOU plav Terran. If its so IMBA, and so easy, YOU try it, so you can respect the amount of strategy, and skill required to stay in games like this against the ridiculous Macro of Zerg. I wish they would have shown the resources lost tab, because im certain that Dark had double to triple the amount of losses in those long games. Terran will NEVER have a game where they have double the ammount of resources loss, and still be in the game, because they will be DEAD

Derek Day yeah, it's not like it was a blink all in every game like the bad old days. Early, mid and late game mastery. 3 GM's playing archon would struggle to match Maru's play.

Zerg has so many tools Dark dont use, or dont use optimally. Still was some crazy games and Dark could have won if he had played 25% better. Also remember it is more a fight of players than races. Maru is just a superior player in general in these matches.

Game 5 was absolute insanity. Maru with 30 scvs to darks 60 for 10 min, Maru had to make literally EVERY decision right to win that game and he friggin did

I've never seen maru lost to swarm hosts. Any recommendations?

i feel like every time I see a match with Maru in it, im like "Oh cool Maru made it into this far of the tourney. He had a good run this year, but there's no way he can win vs Dark." yet here we are.

I'm exhausted just watching this serie, I can't even imagine the players that was so intense !

Amazing to watch now that they are both GSL champs (they weren't during this particular series). If anything was different at all during this match or WESG, Dark could've been the one to be a multiple GSL winner in 2018...

I was rooting for Dark, but all respect to Maru. That was damn impressive.

Does anybody know why these matches have been spaced so far apart? The round of 8 was like 3 weeks ago and now the finals are nowhere to be seen

man, Maru makes ghosts look plain unfair. I don't think any protoss or zerg player uses all their units so damn effectively

Terrans spells are real powerful right now: anti-armor missile, mule drop, snipe. all very good, and maru utilized them very well this series.

Yeah snipe and mules are new and total OP. Armor missile is not bad. But that is like the only usefull thing you can use a expensive raven for...far worser than the old bomb it had! So the armor shit is a total nerf. ( YOU TOTAL FORGOT LOL ) So no Terran is gimped. Also snipe nerfed many times. Nothing op about Terran. Maybe stim + medivac if you want to have any valid argument. The raven stinks compared to what it used to.

Crazy games, Maru deserves the name "the terran king" for sure. He is a master at strategies. And Dark just cant match Maru in the long run. He falls apart on stamina and strategy.

Great games. Ravens were alive for so long and traded remarkably well in the last game. Really need the punishing fungal parasitic bomb combo on them. Y was there no nydus usage? It is such a strong maneuver on this huge map.

This was an amazing semi final. Way too much zerg salt in the comments though. If your race loses, the game is imba, if your race wins the player is amazing 🙄 Zerg is by far and large the strongest race right now, that’s pretty much accepted even by the best zergs in the gsl. Enjoy the game, friends.

As a Zerg fan, I completely agree with you. Zerg is by far the strongest race at the moment. SC2 had to help the Zerg race because none of the players are good enough to win a tournament with the previous patch. The last strongest Zerg player was Life but he is banned for life (irony). The only Zerg player who is able to take advantage of the latest patch is Rogue but the moment SC2 make the other races stronger again, he is gone. soO - chocker in the final Dark - indecisive against top players Scarlett - fluke Serral - won't stand a chance against Koreans in major tournament

Money Tree kudos for a rarely mature appreciation of the game. I agree with you entirely, Life was simply the best, a royal roader beating MVP for his first gsl, he did with zerg what Maru does with Terran. For years now players depend on patches and balance issues to dominate, but every now and then a special, amazing player comes along and stuns everyone. For T and Z those are my choices, for toss, I struggle to find one, but probably MC back in the day.

+Money Tree the idea that Zerg players are worse then terran or toss players in some kind of 'raw' skill is wrong. in terms of 'raw' skill all these players are more or less equal. If a race is over represented in winner,top 4, top 8 positions, it is because that race is just straight out slightly better in the current meta or just stronger. I am not a fan of the raven/ghost meta, nor am I a fan of the defensive macro play, for all races (3-4 bases, with some slight harass inserted, which doesn't hamper the tech at all) which seems to be the way to go in general nowdays. I think blizzard should lower the defensive capabilities of all races or make maps where aggressive early play is more rewarding. I want more 2 base early aggression (which is not an all in) into 3rd base etc. or 1 base aggression aiming to hamper an expanding opponent, and then expand behind it yourself.

Some say terran is OP, I say Maru is just simply OP. ♥

How the balls did game 5 go that way?? both of them did so many things that looked like bad choices but they kept working for soooooo long. I had no idea how it was going to end. such good games lol

while looking at the IMBA comments: i agree with what most are telling that these players are almost equal or on par with regard to mechanical skills.... but the thing that probably sets Maru apart from everyone is his decision making and execution... you can copy and master any strategy that is available on the net and from pro players but it wont mean shit if youre not quick enough to decide on how to counter play everything that your opponent throws at you

sick game 5 & 6. Dark loved a pretty fast expansion just like Serral. He like macro build, spent over a lot minerals/gasses for lesser trade. His strategy was to drain out the opponent's economy. Other things I noticed, Dark was not sneaky player as Rogue and he also had poor utilized vision, these made him lost in the end. That's why maru credited rogue for the best zerg player ever because he mastered almost these qualities.

finally! no zerg in a premium tournament this year. yay for maru!

They were crucial to causing massive damage to a base that you could not enter... 2:36:41 How is Rouge better than Dark? Rouge got beat by Scarlett so early in the series and Dark beat Scarlett.

Looking at these games, I just have to wonder: are Liberators worth the trouble? Their air to air damage is pitiful, they are defenseless when targeting ground units, plus their targeting area is piss poor plus they cannot retaliate to air attacks in the meanwhile AND they don't have that many hitpoints, which means they are worthless at both attack and defense, unless, in the latter case, they are supported by other units, and massively so... PROVIDED that their target area, which is fixed and laughably narrow, is well positioned -- if it isn't, that is basically SIX SECONDS before it is relocated. What is the point of Liberators, really?
