Man, I feel bad for anyone who has to face Terran early on. Cyclons, marauders and ravens too strong in pvt.

Maru showing us some relentlessly aggressive builds, truly a prodigy

Game 2 was cool because Zest used recall on the adept, and then when Maru saw the stalkers coming across the map, forced an all in with his hellion drop ( zest couldn't get his stalkers back after that). Good decision making

the other thing i love about this is the music..hehe

Finals will be a good one.

Funny thing is Stats from all the people has Maru figured out and actually won him. It really depends on who you face. So no, terran is not broken it just depends how well you can defend and read what going on. If you are a strong macro player and you face Maru, well tough luck.

I like Maru but seeing the proxies over and over made me feel like he totally screwed this game now. Then I realized, it does not seem like Protoss or Zerg is doing anything as aggressive as a counter. Instead they choose to play blind if they do not find the proxies and just be reactive. So you would have a battle between someone who can see and someone who is blind. If they play down to Maru's level and have him guessing, too, I think he will feel less comfortable doing proxies in the future if he starts getting punished accordingly. You just have to make it more 50/50 by being both blind. Right now, he just has the upperhand all the way, thru and thru.

This is exactly what is happening. Protoss need to play like Has to win these kind of games. All protoss and zerg are just conforming to the established norms of macro micro gameplays. Starcraft 2 is an ever changing game. You need to change your strategies to win. Right now all terrans are copying Maru because Maru has figured out how to play a terran differently.

If Maru gets a taste of his own medicine and starts losing GSL tournaments, he will get pulled down back to playing with more normal gameplays and strats. But that will only happen when he starts losing. Right now, this is almost risk-free territory for him as long as it is not against another Terran. You made a good point. Terrans are the only ones doing this, they copied Maru with or without realizing why it is so advantageous right now; what only seems to be the case is it is winning games with little perceived and actual risk against other SC2 races.

Think back, since last November, Terrans really have no reliable way to do early or mid game damage without going all-in. And i think the proxy is the solution to a problem. The November patch, sent Terran into hell. Bio opening became a No-No which can be kited by enhanced stalker, and widow mine nerf takes away one of the mid-game slash damage source which seriously hurts the mobility of the Terran midgame army(had to rely on tanks). That was the time that the whole terran community tanked. Byun, TY, innovation all of them could not even win a small tournament. GSL season 1, and 2. Maru was hailed as the last hope of terrans. In S1, he relied heavily on medivet+marine micro on early game harass, but what really got him a title was the turtle mech transition. Because, Terrans could not push without raven, so he just turtled until he had a bunch of ravens with high enough energy. in S2, it was the revitalized the 2 medivet drop build by maru. He was the only terran at the time to be enough to make a transition from 2 medivets into 3 medivet plus 2 tanks timing push, at a extreme timing. It wasn't the unit compo, it was the extreme timing that got him a tittle. But that medivet play is solved by most of zerg with a fast 3rd mass queen build there days. Reynor used that build against Maru, and he could have beaten Maru, had him handled the defense battle at his 4th better in game 2(a seriously bad engagement that costed him most of his hydras). That's the watershed, ever since that match Maru and TY rarely not proxies against zerg or protoss...( I know they proxied before, but after that, it just gotten serious)

@@YayoLife One thing we can be certain of, is that Maru faces a formidable opponent in TY. He will not be as easy as Zest or Stats, and TvT has been Maru's weakest match up. Apart from that as you rightly pointed out Maru will falter and make mistakes when his opponent takes the aggressive stance, and judging by TY's gameplays, we know TY is going to bring in the aggression. So this final will definitely will not be a cakewalk for Maru. TY has a good shot at this and considering that this will be a best of 7 and TY's legendary decision making, Maru will have to come up with unique strategies to defeat him.

Pheonix does not die in one shot. Maru just got into Zest head he has much more issues against Stats. If Stats one against Zest we would probably have TvP finals.

I am not looking forward to widowmines regaining cloak... good grief that was gut wrecnhing to watch Zest try and dismantle the mine field. Zest did so many good moves to clean it up, but one mistake and he's screwed. Meanwhile... mines cost 75-25 =\

I really hope no one encourage this meta and shift back to normal games.

It is not meta. It is very risky and you need insane knowledge to pull it of. Anyone else doing this but maru and maybe TY and you would see how easily you can lose.

Because he was behind in workers, army and could not mine the 2nd base because Maru mined it. See what i did there? Winning from that point on would need a lot of luck or much greater skill it would be over in 5 minutes tops.

I think Maru cheese... because of balance... Current balance is built in the way that Terran must harass from the very beginning in order to survive ... And that's what Maru learn and what we have now... And terran has no late game... so no sense to play long games... and again we get what we have... And Maru's play is just miracle... how he combines all these elements together... it is unbelievable...

Whatever patch it is he will proxy. Maru is known for this aggressive plays even when its innovation on top and he is still developing. Maru has been playing like that for years. Especially now that lategame is very difficult for terran (cant say for maru, he nuke them 20+ times and ghost control is so good. And he can actually win lategame), he has more reason to cheese.

Nothing is OP. The game is well balanced. Stats won against Maru recently. Serral won against pretty much against everyone. It is players who are not balanced and their playstyles. Maru is still favorite against most so thats why he wins trophies but not because he plays Terran.

I feel like the proxing is getting kinda ridiculous. I know people say protoss should proxy too ‘counter’ the proxy but I don’t think it really works that way. Here’s why I think why: 1) protoss can’t fly their building back home 2) terran can follow up with a proxy with a proxy factory and produce cyclones. While protoss can make a cybernetics core.... like that’s gonna help 3) if protoss uses minerals to make shield batteries, terran could take that as a successful proxy. However, if terran makes bunkers, they can just refund it if they don’t need it

It's a metagame response by elite Terrans. The Protoss earlygame meta is to play unbelievably greedy with gateway-gas-nexus builds with no scout, relying on 1 adept to hold off the reaper, chronoing out probes... this works because toss can vary the build with starport before nexus which will cripple T's economy, so terran has to get a reaper for scouting and marines or cyclones for oracle defense. The threat of proxy forces P to scout and play conservative. You can also put some blame on blizzard and the general zerg-favoring in the map pools, when you have huge maps its much harder to scout proxies.

Okay I am diamond 1 with protoss, and I have serious issues with countering proxy reaper into proxy cyclones. Cyclones are just so INSANELY good early on. 1 cyclone beats 3 stalkers unless they are microed. That is insane for a 150/100 unit. 3 stalkers = 375/150. Even as a counter, that is too much that early. Compare it to muta phoenix. Phoenix can pull off great trades against mutas, but that is usally off at least 3 bases before it gets relevant. Imo keep the ground DPS, but then remove the lock on, so oracles can rek the marines if they have high numbers and not worry about the cyclones. Now too many terrans are going rax and straight into command centre. Even scouting it and going appropriate 1 base pressure does not net you a win because the Cyclone can hold out until the tanks come.

Maru ahead in army suply, workers, same number of bases and 2nd base is losing mining time as we speak with mines in it. Zest would have to be much better player than Maru to even hope to win from that point on so it would just be a waste of time to continue playing. It was a good call to gg.

His macro is top tier, only top tier macro Zerg have a chance against him late game. He proxies a lot but his transition is so strong. Watch some of his older games.

@Todd Baert Protoss is actually favorite against Terran. Maru was lucky Stats did not go trough. And Neeb had TY in the pocket until he got tilted by the draw game which was basically his and lost his tempo.

I can't deny how impressive and awesome Maru's control is over his units, but tbh.. the latest patch+his proxy style got me quite bored through the whole tournament, now every single terran goes proxy. All the games are kinda the same, if you are half good and your rush gets scouted or countered you just sell stuff and fly back home.. what did you lose? just some time.. any other race is fucked if a proxy fails. Counter with a toss proxy.. yeah. sure.. good luck with that.. having nothing back home and fewer, less dinamic options is a good counter, no doubt. I get it, he's doing the best he can with what the update brought upon us all.. but it favored his most shity strats and now it's all he does.. and it's honestly lame, no amount of skill makes that an enjoyable game to watch..

Proxy is broken, you can't stop it unless you go all in; you almost always end up behind. Need to balance early game zzzzz

If you scout it Terran is way behind. 4th game was a proof, Zest destroyed him by just canceling the first barracks. Problem is maps are kind of big with not a lot of Zel naga towers, 2 or so more per map it would really hinder the amount of places Terran can proxy to begin with.

Game is fairly well balanced. Maps come and go. Some maps give terran advantage, some zerg, some protoss. There also also vetos. And you can scout for proxies even if the map is big. So no, no need to balance anything.

Don't get me wrong, Serral is a beast but people overhype him above Maru because a victory in a invitational event that happened to have "GSL" in its name while Maru has obliterated Serral in every other event and is contending for his 3rd straight GSL title.

Maru makes Terran harass look absurd. He's just amazing at it as it's very difficult to harass at all bases and not lose anything. If Terran doesn't harass they lose the game to protoss at a much higher rate. Terrans on ladder cannot perform harass to this level that Maru does

Just cuz one guy is clearly the best doesn't make it op. If you aren't Maru or TY you are not having this kind of success against protoss. Just from GSL look at Keen, Byun, alive, bunny... the list goes on man. Maru and TY are literally two guys who have just found and perfected a method to win TvP and they are literally the two best Terran players in the world. Now protoss needs to react to the meta. Stats was able to beat Maru in GSL vs the World so it's doable and they aren't having issues beating anyone else that plays T

Too bad Zest won against Stats. Stats vs Maru would be much better games to watch.

I agree. I think Stats would kill him again. Terran VS Protoss is so hard. I feel like Protoss > Terran > Zerg > Protoss. But Maru got into Zest head bad and tilted him.
