What amazing birds.......from the kingfisher family. There are species of birds that are of a very high intelligence.... I'm always amazed at how willing your birds are....also magpies, to be so close to you. It's more than just food, I think......but their curiosity as well as being a highly social species.

Did you make that up? Kookaburras are not particularly intelligent and the are most definitely not a social species, in fact they are highly territorial, experiments have shown they will refuse to take food from another’s territory even when it is very close to the edge of the other’s boundary. Kookaburras have tight familial bonds but not with other groups of kookaburras and will defend their territory make them only social when females leave the family group to breed with other males. Highly social species are birds that do not exhibit territoriality such as Rainbow lorikeets.

I live inside a forest (in India). A few crows come to my window every morning (and sometime repeats their visit during the day). I give them a treat they like - locally they are called 'gatiya' - little pieces of fried noodle like sticks made from bengal gram flour (it is a local snack). What is amazing is the pinpoint accuracy with which they pick up the tiny tid-bits from my hand - never ever did their beaks touch me - forget about hurting me. It is so wonderful to have these friends visit me and trust me enough to allow such an interaction. We literally have an eye-to-eye conversation.

You saw so many varieties of Kookaburras? Blue Winged kookaburras are rarely seen south of Brisbane (except near the coast) so seeing them on the Murray must have been a treat. Don’t worry about their big beaks, they’re not particularly strong.
