Hi Laura! Yeah, I can agree with consistency and confidence as well. I work a 10-hour job (4 times a week.) When I come home, I want to eat and go to sleep. To remedy this, I go over my week's lessons on my phone while I am at work throughout the day whenever I can. My work friends get upset because I do not want to sit and chat with them on my breaks. Russian is a priority for me! Sometimes, I do not have the time to study for an hour after I get home so I would rather take that time I do have during my breaks and study something useful; other than sit and talk shop at work. This is also an escape from work and has helped me to relax! At the end of the day, if I do have time, I will squeeze in a quick study session before bed. My job also requires me to count items often so I have found that I can count is Russian much more accurately than I can in English. I try to use Russian as much as possible when I am at work. I force myself to think in Russian as much as possible. Another thing that I have found that is a great tool is keeping a planner. I list tasks that I want to complete that week and I try to get them all completed.

So, consistency makes sense brain-wise. Doing at least one tiny activity in your target language every day will show your brain that the topic is still relevant. So here is my advice: Invest two or three afternoons in creating an “activity library”. It should include many little things that you can do in about 5 minutes. Personally I love paper flashcards, so I always prepare a stack of these in advance. I have also made a little notebook with printed out exercises and the transcriptions of listening texts that I can fit in my handbag. You could also create a playlist in your target language for spotify and print out the lyrics, install some apps on your phone, divide a long reading text in small 5 minute-chunks, create a 5 minute-recording with difficult vocabulary etc. The idea is to have a certain range of very short activities that don’t need any more preparation during the next weeks. Once everything is ready, commit yourself to do at least one 5-minute-activity every day. It can be just listening to a song or doing duolingo, anything is better than nothing. And then forget about your guilty conscience. These short activities might motivate you to really get into learning more every day, but even if they don’t, they will keep you connected to your target language in the meanwhile.

I think we feel like that because today we have social network and we see only the best part of people. I feel like people manage every things in their life, but it's only because we see only the best part. I'm trying to follow people who are more honest and not show themselves only in a perfect way. While watching your video a lot of thoughts came to my mind (as always). Unfortunately, a lot of foreign language learners struggle with consistency, myself included. To start with, I've been trying to learn Spanish since December of 2019, i tried a lot of different programs, and i think i've found a good one (which means that works for me effectively). However, because of my English exams i HAVE TO to put some priorities and i've minimized my time on learning Spanish. I always feel confused when it comes to everything, but even though in learning languages. I either have some positive thoughts about something, let's say about a grade i got in a test, but right after this thought, it comes a other one that says ''you could it better, you know that. ''. I have no clue how to explain this by using words, but my point is that i'm always puzzled at everything. I think i'm running in circles, i do. Thankfully, i'm taught English at a language school, so i literally have to be prepared or have done my homework. Lastly i wanna say this: I felt truly supported and understood by your genrous and supporting words, and i don't know if anyone has ever said publicly kinder words than yours. Always supporting you and being by your side! >3

Hi! It's obvious while learning a language we struggle. And we should find a solution. We sometimes give up and think that this is just wastage of time. I personally experienced this. So we should be consistent. Thanks a lot for this awesome motivation.

@@LauraMaliszewska I can understand the normal conversation in French. I am on the boundary of being fluent in it. I think it's okay that we are not perfect or fluent in any language. Native speakers are not going to judge you. We need to be understood by them. And natives love seeing non-native speakers speaking their language. I enjoyed that journey.

sometimes, it's so shoulders down to think all the time I have lost since a long time ago, because of my thinkingful mind, and I see now when I am in the need of using my other languages it's a constent struggle trying to make it as natural as I can, an example, me writing an English comment right now, but it's ok I guess all we are overcoming ourselves, improving our skills, greeting Laura!♥️

Hey Laura, quite impressive.. you're really a language talent 🙂 I fully agree.. One thing I found out while learning languages for over 3 decades: You do NOT need to learn grammar rules! It's no shortcut, it slows down and demotivates many students

I recently moved to Luxembourg and whilst english is enough for me to get by I really want (and also need) to learn french. Even at my job people are expecting me to learn it eventually. Ive been procrastinaning for the past 6 months making so many exuses its unbelievable and embarassing. During quarantine I opened my book only a few times! My greatest struggle is consistency and most importantly patience. English is not my first language either and it took me years to master. It is this very fact that is giving me anxiety to learn a new language. Knowing how long it is going to take me is just frustrating. I also get frustrated with myself because I can be very consisten and achieving in other aspects of my life but french doesn’t seem to be of them at the moment. Anyway, enough of my rant 😄, I really enjoy your videos, thanks for the motivation and you got a new subscriber! 😊

One thing that helps me with being consistent is having a study buddy. I know, it's not good solution for everyone (and during quarantine quite hard to accomplish) but having someone who keeps you accountable might be a good thing. Ps. I also struggle with consistency. So I feel you Girl! Pozdrawiam serdecznie :P.

I struggled with confidence for the longest time, but I knew I needed to overcome it by talking to someone. I’d say I’m at intermediate level with French but by not talking it was seriously holding me back. I hadn’t spoken for years because I was too shy 😞 I finally signed up for iTalki a couple of weeks ago and booked a trial lesson with one of the tutors and one of the first things she said was that she was not there to judge, only to help (which should be obvious since that’s what tutors are supposed to do but for some reason hearing her say it made me feel much better). After that I scheduled weekly meetings with her ahead of time just to keep myself consistent! The last thing I want is to go into the next meeting with her without having improved at least a tiny bit.

Your English is perfect!..I can only detect a slight bit of your native tongue, but that slight bit is a plus!..I'm 63, and I only took on learning Italian about 2 months ago. I compare it to learning to play guitar, which I'd begun just 10 years ago..It is fits and starts of going from very excited to downright confusion to slight depression to wanting to throw the guitar into the street, so as to let it get run over by a cement mixer..Rinse and repeat...I've come to accept that way of thinking and just go with the flow..I'm retired..I'm not going anywhere (hopefully) soon. Neither is the language..I look at it this way; I didn't know the language for 63 years, and did ok without it! Though I am determined to learn it. I think it is the most beautiful language in the world, when spoken correctly....Good luck with your French learning, and thanks for the video!

I almost cried with the last part... I've struggled to learn English with, I've attempted to perfect it as I'm someone so perfectionist. And actually. I discovered perfectionism doesn't come to excellence and exactitute. I know perfectly it's a mistake and defect I've made every single day of my days as I love doing everything perfectly. That's why I've slowed down all that kinda, disgraceful perfections I make and thank to the universe for every imperfection. I admit I love imperfections and imperfect people because they touch my heart softly. That's why I'm gonna try to no be so perfectionist and make too many mistakes as I need to. I've felt a lot of frustration and anxiety when I didn't have all the advances I always wanted to break through with my English, I hated when I made mistakes with my speaking and writing skills, now, I love every mistake I made, it's been a few difficult to speak with some native English speakers since they don't respect anyone who doesn't speak their language perfectly like them. Besides, I cannot move on to live in a native English country since it's something I can't afford to right now. Well, I'm only 20 years-old. I had planned out to study at the French Alliance to study French but, Pandemic threw all my plans away. Nevermind, I always know what to do, I've picked French up on my own by reading a lot of news in French, and listening and comprehending a lot of videos in French, everything has worked out perfectly! Anyway, I'll always hate English for everything I went through by that language, and I already fell in love with French.

I'd like to add one more thing, coming from my long years making mistakes. Just keep learning. That's all you have control over..Don't get down. Because the one thing I've discovered is that you can learn a whole boat load of stuff, and feel pretty confident in that knowledge. Then, it seems all at once, it just flushes out of your brain for no apparent reason!..DON'T WORRY!..Just push through; but take breaks...You will find if you keep doing that, that you didn't lose that data at all..It was just on vacation..On Hiatus, if you will..It's probably because you overloaded your brain with extreme amounts of information. My brain, I believe rebels when I do that, and just says; BASTA!..ENOUGH!..It's healthy to hit pause for a bit... My experience is it will come flooding back with a vengeance, if you do that...You can lose it permanently if you just stop all together..Then you have to hit restart, and that's no fun. Defeating the purpose of why you wanted to learn in the first place!..........Add. : Having said all that, (before hearing all of what you had to say) I apologize if what I'm saying seems redundant to all you are saying in this video.

French is more difficult language then English, which You've studied a lot. Italian and Spanish are more easy then French. I am not speaking about the level of knowledge but about othet things like pronunciation which is very difficult in French. This can Block someone very succesfuly
