I'm the same with Spanish, I stopped actively learning it in terms of studying with books and such. Now i just immerse myself in media meant for native speakers to acquire more vocabulary and see grammar constructs I learned in useful context. sometimes there comes a point where burying yourself in textbooks and flashcards just doesn't cut it, you need to see how the language is naturally spoken. I think the method that worked for me was learning first and then using those skills to just go with immersion suitable for my level and slowly increasing the difficulty.

I totally agree with everything you're saying! As a Linguistics student, we study how children vs. adults learn/acquire languages; I'd definitely say that at least from what I've seen, the most successful mastery over a language is always with people who "notice" grammar and syntax (i.e. acquiring!) vs. those who simply drill study. Great video!

I totally agree with Stephen Krashen. That's what I did with Spanish, from day 1 I have read and listened to simple stories, with a lot of repetitions. And a lot of listening while doing other things. I only make sure that I understand the content, and don't try to understand every single word. After six months, I am able to understand pretty interesting and fun content. I don't try to memorize words - when I see a word in several different places, I will begin to understand the word anyway, without any learning. Slowly I develop a feeling for grammar. After 6 months, I understand more Spanish than French, which I learned for 4 years at school. Soon I will be able to read longer books. I don't need to *know* the meanings of words - I want to *understand* them. I don't want to know grammar rules, but rather have a feeling of what is right and what is wrong. When I throw a few million words of comprehensible input at my brain, it will have no choice but to develop a good understanding of the language

A very informative and balanced video. In my opinion, learning and acquisition work together, but learning is more effective in the long run. Acquisition is key to producing natural speech and extending vocabulary. Ever since I began acquiring more, I am able to write in a journal using French and German, as well as understand videos. Acquiring is also important for reading. I have to force myself not to worry about unknown words while reading, as those will be acquired through context. However, I always back up my acquisition with learning. Whenever I acquire something, I deconstruct it using the tools I have gained through conscious study of a language. It's insufficient for me to simply pick things up: I have to know *why* the language is that way, why something is wrong (which children often do not know until taught), and what the rules are. When learning rules, I find it easier to be more flexible in what I can say. Learning rules also helps me when I do not have speakers of the target language around: I can spend the time drilling in the foundations, which makes acquiring much, much quicker later on. On top of that, I learn 2-3 languages at a time, often using one to learn another. For this work, having a solid basis in grammar, vocabulary, and syntax is crucial to accurate speech and writing. So for me, even though acquisition is very important, learning has the edge.

I've been ''learning'' English since about a year ago, at the beginning I did do some kind of studying with the intention to do comprehensible input later, now my way to learn is just to flow and to use the language as if it was my first language: I read stuff that I like, I watch tv series that I like, I watch a lot of youtube videos I also use some apps which help to improve my listening and to get used to the language itself I don't practice speaking yet because it's not a need for me at this moment, it's not my priority, in fact, to learn English for me is just something that I do for fun and that I really like comprehensible input is definitely the key to learn any language you want, and I also think each person have their own way to learn languages based on what their goals are, in my case all I want is to enjoy myself learning while I do something fun, and that's completely okay with me

The problem is that most people do not understand the acquiring part. If you are a complete beginner, if you do not immerse yourself in comprehensible input, you will not acquire the language. Watching hours and hours of native content like K-Dramas or American sitcoms without making sense of it, will get you to the point, where you picked up very few words and phrases. Hence, makes no sense if you would like to progress. You either have to use comprehensible Input only or use approaches like the Refold method, where you to Anki wraps everyday. But we talking here about hours and hours of immersion everyday in order to progress. The more words you know the more you can go towards native content, because you will eventually pick up more at this stage. I remember that you were no beginner in French at all when you turned to this method, this is of course a total different story then, so in the case you mention, I fully agree with you. My approach is to use one beginner resource like Teach yourself, Assimil or something similar and after feeling confident with it, I turn to native content only but make sure that it is a good mix between written and visual content.

Great video. Thanks you :). I like the tabs idea. I also find speaking out loud while adding an emotion to words helps. Creating an emotional feeling is important because our brain remembers best when an emotion is associated to an experience. As an example, that’s why we remember our first kiss so vividly but fail to remember every kiss we ever had. So, say if I want to to learn the word ‘traurig’ in german, I would imagine the feeling of grief and sadness while speaking aloud, ‘ich bin traurig’ 😢 . I’d then use it in different contexts while having imaginary conversations. I might combine words and switch emotions. Example: ich bin traurig 😢 aber jetzt bin ich aufgeregt 😛 . Words not associated with emotion can be used in Same way by creating real life feelings/emotions and attaching them to them. I hope this is useful for anyone reading, and thanks again for the video. Very inspiring!

Were an adult to learn a foreign language in the same way that a child learns, they would take years to get the basics. It take very many hours everyday for years for a child to learn. So for an adult spending one hour a day, it would take roughly ten years. The term acquiring is too woolly in my view. Acquiring is in fact a form of learning. Many people now use the terms explicit and implicit learning. When I was young, I learnt a lot of words in my native language explicitly. We all do. Both methods work, but Krashen is correct that huge amounts of comprehensible input is crucial. From what I have read, Krashen takes a hard core approach, and linguists consider his ideas to be in essence correct, but too hard core. Incidentally Indid try to acquire a language, French, when I lived in Montreal. I failed. 18 months ago I decided to learn French using implicit and explicit methods. I have had far more success in less time. I am incapable of acquiring grammar without some explicit learning. So when you learn a language, you don’t read any courses books? You don’t do any grammar study? You just listen, nothing more? BTW that you speak so many languages is impressive.

From my point of view and my experience learning English ''acquiring'' a language is not that effective when you start learning the language, you must have a very strong grammar foundation (minimum the basis) for the acquiring process to work, there are some grammar structures that you cannot acquire just for listening or trying to imitate the way a baby learns his/her mother tongue.

Hello Laura, thank you for the video! I am curious, if we want to acquire a language from scratch like a child, which is the Comprehensible Input you mentioned, how do we do that? Because I tried, but I don't understand what's going on in videos and the podcasts I listen to, so I'm not sure how do we eventually equip ourselves with the language if what we listen to does not make sense? Your reply will be highly appreciated, thank you! :)

As a quadrilingual person and starting the 5th one I can tell you that yes some acquire without memorization but this is not the reality for many other people ... They are a lot of researches about it. It's a mix of them... And also some brain shapes has also something to due with it.

Using flashcards to put them off either later is not acquisition IT is learning. The technique used here is learning

I think is not necessary to have a combination of language learning and acquisition, because language acquisition is already responsible for accuracy and fluency. Language learning only creates something that Stephen Krashen called "Monitor" or "Editor". Conscious learning only helps to correct possible errors when the form of a sentence pops into our mind. So, it kinda works as an editor or a monitor. It is not effective when we are speaking a foreign language because we usually don't have time to think about grammatical aspects. The words just come out of our mouth effortlessly. The process should be the same in the target language.

Well, even if you believe in Krashen's model of language acquisition, you may not want to minimise the role of the so-called "monitor", at least not if you want to master more formal and higher registers. Why? Because the higher the register, the more likely you are to have to use aspects of the language that aren't "acquirable" at all. Usually it's because they are aspects of language that survive from an other era. They are no longer acquirable naturally because they're just too rare and too weird. For instance, could you "correctly" use lie vs lay in all verbal tenses? Not without consciously thinking about it you couldn't. No native speaker can. Transitive/intransitive verb pairs used to be common in English. Today there are only four left. So it's just too rare to acquire and use without conscious application, and it's further complicated by the nature of the verbs themselves. (it's honestly stupid... the past tense of the intransitive verb "lie" is "lay", i.e. the same as the present tense of the transitive verb "lay".... like who comes up with this shit! ^^). Anyway, there are plenty of similar examples. You can decide that you don't care about formal registers and leave it at that. That's fine. It does come at a social cost though. If you have to speak in a formal setting and you don't master those registers, you may be perceived as uneducated, etc. So best to at least be aware of that. And if you do want to be able to use those registers, your only option is some degree of "learning" and conscious application of those rules.

I am using this technique with French (using Lingq). It has massively helped my reading ability but I feel that I am not making much progress with listening. I find myself being able to read every word in a transcript, but when I hear the sentence (evening being able to hear the words), I find myself recognising the words but not understanding what I am hearing.. It feels like I am trying to juggle, but can't catch the balls. Is this normal, and how long does it take to understand? I am currently on about 70 to 80 hours of listening.

You need to watch English shows dubbed in your target language and with the subtitles in your target language. A great one is the show 24. And for Spanish, telenovelas are great. Reading will help you acquire vocab and grammatica but not really with communication. You need to actually see how people communicate with each other and then do it yourself so by watch shows in your target language a couple of hours a day will help greatly with that.

  • @Jademoonx

Also after you read a paragraph and you understood it completely try to listen to at without reading the transcript and see if you still understand it. If not that means you need to read to again with sound and after try again without script till you understood everything.

Is ease really the best proof, though? I would certainly say that acquiring is quicker than learning, but there are drawbacks to only acquiring and not learning. I find acquiring far more effective when I have learned something, because I can use the tools (grammar, etc.) to help decode what I have just picked up in a video, or in a book.

Please keep practicing your "American accent".... I am hearing "Amurr-ican" when you attempt to say "American," Laura. In this video, there were several instances where you attempted this proper noun, and you missed it every time!..... Maybe you are not hearing it properly.....One cannot reproduce a word they are not hearing. Think "very, merry, berry, Terry -- rather than "furry, slurry, Surrey."
