2 Hunters Vanish into thin air/ Neither ever found! San Juan NF & Remote OR

#missinghunter
#alviewebb
#shawnhiggins
Hello everyone, in today's case I'll be discussing two very mysterious hunter disappearances..
Alvie Webb was 86 years old in 2019 when he was on a hunting trip with his family in the San Juan National Forest in Colorado. His friends left him in one spot and went off and said they would be back to pick him up at the bottom of the hill" at 10 am. They returned to find no Alvie Webb. Alvie was familiar with this area had hunted there for the past 5 years. Not a single trace of him has ever been found, and he was wearing an orange hunting vest and hat. no gear, nothing has ever been found despite extensive searches.. How is that possible?!
if you have any information regarding Alvei's case , please call the Montezuma County Sheriff’s office at: 970-565-8452
Shawn Higgins was 41 when he went hunting in the Shasta Costa drainage in the Bear Camp area of Oregon, roughly 45 miles to the east of Gold Beach. Shawn, and his 21 year old son Trevor, went missing Friday, October 14, 2016 while hunting remote Oregon. An area they were very familiar with. Shawn had known the area since middle school. They were supposed to meet up back at the truck later that evening to rendezvous with Shawn's uncle.. Trevor got there and met his Uncle (who was supposed to then join them) but since they couldn't find Shawn, They decided to go out and look but unfortunately during this search, Trevor got lost himself. Thankfully Search and Rescue found him 4 days later. The search for Shawn went on for another 9 days in heavy rain, and nothing was ever found. It was only supposed to be a short trip so he didn't even have his pack with him. This is still an open investigation.
If you have any information regarding this case please contact the Curry County Sheriff’s Office at: 541-247-3276
Both of these cases are extremely bizarre.. Alvie had trouble walking and was 86 years old.. he couldn't' have walked too far and they covered all that ground.. and he was wearing bright orange// What happened to him?
My thoughts and prayers go out to both of these families and hope that their loved ones can be brought home to them soon🙏🙏

It is something beyond the imagination. I grew up with the Cascade and Olympic Mountain Ranges as gorgeous chisled skylines in the distance east and west. This year I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and the dimension amidst the Cascades is simply boggling. Trees forever...vast areas that have been untouched or rarely so. And due to budget cuts a few years ago there's virtually a handful of people managing millions of acres in the USA. In any case truly so wild, beautiful and astounding and an ominous place to get lost. With all the endless prevailing scuttlebutt, this experience has given me something to feel akin about. One could spend a lifetime exploring just the Cascades and there would be a new incredible vista everyday. To add...these are maginificent places beyond social constructs and that stillness you mention is a great equalizer! :)

The natives call these lands “borderlands” as in bordering another dimension. Come here and you will see why. It is almost spiritual the vastness of it. My native grandmother said that these are the lands that the elders used to talk to the other worlds. I believe it.

My boyfriend and I spent 4 or 5 days out there up Agness in the Shawn Higgins search effort. My boyfriend was good friends with Shawn and often hunted this area with him in the past. It was heartbreaking going home without finding Shawn. Our hopes got really high once Trevor was found. I’ve lived in Coos Bay for years and this is the first time I’ve heard the rumor that Shawn isn’t out there in those woods (implying someone took him). That seems a little hard to believe. While it’s weird Shawn was never found, those woods are enormous and treacherous. I remember I really wanted to participate in the actual search efforts but the land is so rugged and dangerous. Last thing I wanted was to become lost or injured myself and take resources away from finding Shawn so I stayed at the camp site during the day while my boyfriend went out with the search crews. It took 4 days for hundreds of searches to find Trevor and I believe he was just a couple miles from where he was last seen. If I remember right, Trevor stayed put the first night he got lost waiting for search crews so he didn’t wander too far. I’ve heard that if you get lost out in the woods it’s a good idea to stay put (if you know people are looking for you). If Shawn spent days walking (maybe injured, confused) he could be anywhere. I don’t think he was wearing bright clothes when he went missing either. The whole situation is heartbreaking. Just so greatful Trevor (his son) was found alive and well. At least Stephanie still has her son. I can’t believe Shawns been gone for 5 years now. 😢

As a kids we used to play hide and seek in a woods much smaller than a national park. No one could ever find anyone determined to not be found. Staying completely still is a great strategy. "He couldn't have gotten that far..." I had a seventy year old friend who stepped out for a quart of milk. He was found 300 miles away in a confused stare of mind. Letting an 86 year old go off into the woods alone is akin to the Eskimos putting their old ones one an iceberg to float away forever. Poor judgement on everyones' part.

Something fishy with that whole story. Wonder what the financial situations are/were. And no one leaves ONE man alone and yet the others stay together. What made them decide to leave a single person alone in the woods, much less an elder while the, I think there were 2 others) while those 2 a pair, YOUNGER than him but they STAYED together. I spent a just over a year looking for a missing person here in Perth Western Australia. Juraj left his home one morning and drove and got his car bogged on a bush track. Then he started walking north roughly, it is supposed he had dementia. His family were committed to find him. They plotted every search on a gps and mapped them, eliminating areas covered. One morning I was with his two sons and we found his remains. I think if you keep looking, meticulously mapping areas covered there's a quite good chance of finding the remains. Never give up, leave no one behind.

An idea on the Alvie Webb case - One reason many hunters get lost is they know where they are, but then see deer/elk and begin to pursue the game and in their excitement they do not pay attention to where they are going. In thick woods it is possible to get lost after hiking even a short distance. I ALWAYS carry a GPS and make a waypoint of the where my truck is parked. I then turn off the GPS and go into the woods and hike wherever I like without worry. When it is time for me to hike out if I get turned around I can then turn on the GPS and have it guide me back to my truck. I also have a GPS app on my iPhone that I use as a backup, so at any given time I have two GPS units on me. I was hunting in Northern Idaho earlier this fall and there was some bad fog that would limit visibility making it VERY easy to get turned around. In six days of hunting I had two different times that I had to use the GPS technology to get me out of the woods. It works GREAT. I have used GPS technology since the mid 1990's. It has never failed me.

This case, with the age of the man and his inability to move any distance by himself reminds me of another missing person's case that happened here in Colorado. Two men went out rock hunting. I can't remember what they were looking for, but one went off to check a different area, left the first guy sitting in a shallow pit, doing a little digging looking for whatever kind of gems he was looking for. A short period of time later, comes back and the guy is gone. No sign of him walking off (which he wouldn't have been able to do, he needed help walking even short distances) and all these years later there's still no sign of what happened to him. I'll see if I can figure out that guy's name.

That said, I recall my dad always remaining close by to grandpa for this very reason. It just doesn't make much sense to prioritize the hunt of the animal over the safety and concern of your loved ones.

I'll be honest, at first these missing person stories never struck me as much of a mystery. I figured, its a large area, they simply got lost and likely passed away. But then I watched some of these stories and learned just how many go missing and are never found, ever! Yes, these parks can be vast but we are talking human beings, they can only go so far from where they were last kniown. Secondly, people, like every living creature, take the path of least resistance, so theres little reason for a lost person to go off a path and bushwhack. So yeah, it is bizarre that a search crew of hundreds cannot find a trace of someone when they have likely covered every conceivable path within a large area. Whats more amazing is these folks remain missing despite years of other hikers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiests having been in every path or creek bed since. The ones in popular places like the Sierras where there are a bunch of people missing, never to be seen again, like that kid who took that photo of himself. That was a very popular hiking area and he was never found. Where the hell do they go?

Coloradoan here... A lot of people go missing in the national parks and forests out here. Been that way for a hundred years. Sometimes they leave a trail that just stops, other times they vanish completely without a trace. We have a lot of animals here, obviously. Mountain lion, black bear, coyotes. The official position of the state is that grizzly bears have been extinct in Colorado since 1915, or something. Then a guy was mauled almost to death in 1979 by a female grizzly who they determined had given birth and nursed cubs, and the guy only survived because he stabbed the bear in the neck with an arrow, killing it. The official position of the state remained that grizzly bears were extinct in Colorado. I've watched coyotes strip a horse carcass to the bones over the course of a couple days, so it wouldn't surprise me if the remains of people that go missing get eaten, but I would still expect people to stumble upon their clothes, shoes, orange hunting jackets, etc. Hiking, hunting, biking, all kinds of outdoor activity are incredibly popular here. One thing the state has that a lot of people don't know about is reports of all kinds of supernatural activity, from UFO sightings and cattle mutilations, to Bigfoot sightings. I'm not saying it's related to any of those things, but I do wonder sometimes.

I was raised in Durango and know this area well. I never even heard of this story but there are lots of places up there that all have demonic names. The los animas river is the river of lost souls. And the area he is in is right to the west of a ski mountain called purgatory. This area just had the 416 fire go through a good majority of that area which btw is an area with a TON of fingers! That area is so inhospitable something has to have happened. And to your point of grizzlies being in Colorado... the road from Dolores to telluride there is an area where a family friend has seen a wolf. And myself have been in an area of those mountains where I was elk hunting and ran across an bear scat pile as big a cow patty. I was 17 at the time in 2002. I have spent my entire life in the woods, I know what all the animals scat looks like in my area and there is absolutely NO way it was a black bear. It was absolutely massive at least three times bigger than any other black bear I have ever seen. I guarantee you there are still grizzlies in southern colorado. although I had faith in my shooting capability my 270 wasn’t what I would even consider protecting myself from a grisly with so I made tracks out of there as fast as I could never to go back to that section of woods again.

In the Oregon case, I can tell you from personal experience that I have gotten 'lost' or 'turned around' twice in Oregon. Fortunately i was not that far from roads and found my way back, but the takeaway I had was, it is very hard to identify landmarks in these woods and terrains. At some point it all looks familiar or the same, but it is not. Easy to get turned around and miss trails. The part of Oregon focused in the video is very remote. I would say GPS is essential if you back pack in to any of these areas.

Ok just some info I used to live in Colorado and hunt elk there always alone. Bought an over the counter tag in that unit in conjeos county near plataro resivour. Drove down there on a 5 day scouting trip in Aug like 2 weeks before archery opener. First place I scouted east of the resivour was very steep almost I huntable. I had a new Toyota 4runner trd pro to get around the roads in. Ended up setting up and looking west at the south end of resivour watching for elk Nothing abnormal and I watched elk to the east for 2 days morning and night. Day 3 a Saturday I woke up to rain glassed again and elk we're still there so I made my move over there. Leaving there was a log across the road which I had to move. It was if someone put it there?. So I make it down and back up the west side below where the elk we're. No vehicles anywhere around so I'm like great. Off I go up to like 11 thousand feet. The sign in the timber was great and it was way more huntable. I got my bearings and was an island of timber there I wanted to put a trail camera in . Now in the timber was waist high grass but not like stickers. On me I had a Glock 10mm a knife bear mace and a Delorme inreach that was tracking me live on Facebook for my wife's benefit. One I get up to the flat portion I see the island of trees but there were elk close by I did not want to bump. By now it's pouring rain and I have seen enough and formed a plan for my bow hunt in 2 weeks. Now I start back to the round and my truck. I got my gps out and am taking a different route down. Now at one point I thought I was following an elk trail in the high grass as something had knocked down the wet grass and I used its trail. I break out to a no grass section and stop and look down and there is a giant barefoot track in the mud. I'm like wtf as it's pouring out and I'm the only one here. I called out show yourself now. Of course nothing ...I took a pic of the track and double timed it out of there. I was supposed to stay for 2 more days but I drive home to Florissant which took 5 hours. Little did I know I was in an area where they have been seen and the fbi had examined footprint casts taken by local le right there years prior. Tgere have been people go missing there also. The local elk guide won't say a peep about it. That's in the San jauns national forest in conjeos county.

The under brush is thick. I have hunted Elk in this area I'm almost sure that they walked past him . As far as K9 are concerned People put WAY to much trust in their ability to locate a person, the scenting conditions have to be perfect. Another thing to consider is these dogs just don't get much real world experience in looking for people. Same with the SAR personnel . A friend and I were planning on looking for him last spring 2020 but Covid put a stop to that. Maybe we can try again next year.

Rare in the old days and not plausible anymore with weed being worthless in Oregon. Another case in the Bear Camp area had the poor guy go crazy, strip naked in a snow storm. Even tried to warm up by laying in a creek. He wandered in the same circle until he died. Terrain is the culprit in these cases, IMHO.

I always wonder why people think it's so unfathomable that people disappear in large uninhabited forests and are never found. Lost hunters or hikers can get into trouble many different ways and end up way off the beaten path and eventually die. Lost people can get crushed by falling trees, fall and get speared by a branch, fall down a ravine and get washed down river, end up in remote caves, fall under logs, have creatures eat the remains. The possibilities are endless on how people go missing and SAR can't turn over every log or look in every boulder field that someone may have fallen in. Lesson learned, never go off alone in the forest.

My friend went missing and they brought in dogs, cops, dnr, a planes they found nothing and acussed me of foul play because the dog would go in the woods to his blind and come back out to the road on the trail and his bow was hanging on the first step of his stand so they said he wasn't in the woods. The next morning my friend walked out of the woods a few miles away and said he slept in a tree all night because he was scared of coyotes. That equals missing , dead people, hypothermia starts when the temperature drops to fifty degrees, the person becomes listless, confused, then deteriorates from there, perfect subjects for predation, missing bodies and gear are because predators pull the dead to a cache site, bury it and then consume it leasurely. there aren't any aliens, weird government agencies or sasquatches. just people overestimating what they can do , then wandering off into the wilderness. and succumbing from their own foolishness. Look at the first case,86 years old, can't walk far, yeah real smart, chances of a good outcome? Zero.

Albi was age 86. Being elderly there’s No way he walked away! Especially as he had Agreed to be there (where they left him) in a few hours. AFTER WATCHING several hundred of these missing person’s videos, I’m beginning to agree with the theory that - located in the untouched wilderness of the world - there are dimensional doorways that move around. These can open and close . I couldn’t say what kind of intelligence uses them - or why, for what purpose I don’t know. But there’s no other explanation for many of these disappearances. There’s a lot we don’t understand about this Earth. However I agree it’s time for us to know everything about them. I object to people being taken away and either never returned or their lifeless body being returned sometime later. The suffering of their families, friends and communities is unbearable and we need this to STOP AT ONCE

Captivating stories! Both of these stories coincidentally, involve the presence, even if shortly, of another person. A person “close” to the vanished. Huge searches, technology, and yet, not one piece of evidence, not a fabric, rusty knife, ripped orange vest, soggy gear, nothing. Gear and human remains were even found of the Great Bart Schleyer, and Schleyer roamed places that would have made Davy Crockett nervous. It’s hard not to think that these two cases are somewhat bizarre and suspicious. Thoughts?

Got lost one day near brightenbush hot springs. Walked down a path. Turned around to realize I was totally lost on a game trail that vanished. After hollering for friends. Realizing no one could hear me and me not either. A prayer and the wind carried me back the half mile or so I was lost . 100 percent scared and lost my mind had to be called back from panic. Imagine panicked and lost

Dave Paulides, with MISSING 411, said that most people that carry a "Locator Beacon" with them in the woods, forest, mountains, etc... are rarely lost and come back home. I think something beyond a human being is abducting or killing these hunters and hikers.

It could be possible that Alvie didn't want to be found. As an avid outdoors person I've definitely had thoughts of disappearing into the forest just before I'm too elderly to pull it off. He may have felt something like a failing memory or tightening of reigns around his independence and it was time to go and made a plan. The only glitch with this plan is putting SAR and family at risk ... I don't intend to be the least bit callous. I recently spent two years seeing my elderly parents thru hospice. For me it was full of lovely rewards but to the elderly person they've seen friends and family become what appears to be a burden. There's a fierce sense of independence to hold onto and this could be the ultimate control of that. In other tribal cultures it is an option. It's still not off the table for me as a retirement plan before I start forgetting family names or putting both legs in one side of me undies ...and I know of others with this idea as well.

jane freeman - I've watched several videos of people who have done exactly what you describe. They've gone off an built a tiny home in a forest somewhere, learned to live on what nature provides in the area where they built, and they intend to stay there until they've breathed their last. It's their ingenuity that I find so marvellous!

I can relate in the sense that I spend most of my free time alone in the outdoors year around and I do hope that's where I am when my time comes and I've also told my family that if I ever went missing take comfort in the fact that I would rather disappear in the outdoors and be laying out there somewhere than be buried in a cemetery.

This many people going missing in US national parks is difficult to understand. We have many national parks in Europe also, but nothing like this happens in this magnitude. National parks in US and Canada are huge compared the ones in Europe though, I mean there is big difference. Hunters dont go missing here either atleast no news station reports news like that really. It would be a rare occasion.

I've been in both of those areas. I probably know the Bear Camp area better than anyone. It's beyond rugged, you really can't even understand it until you've been there. Lightning fires at Wayout Saddle, tree planting all over that area. Hunters tend to get tunnel vision and are driven by adrenaline, look up after hiking for an hour and in rugged county you can easily be 10 miles down the hill and have no idea how you got there. My style is to carry flagging, tie a ribbon here and there, turn around and look where I came from to make returning easier. It's very normal to leave a man behind or drop someone off to hike down to the next road. I'd have searched to the river in the Bear Camp case and at least 25 miles downhill for the old feller.

There's a story about a guy and his son who went hunting in Josephine County, Oregon, and at least the Dad was never seen again. I can't remember any details at this moment, if I can come up with names, I'll pass them along. Was in the Coastal Range, I believe in the Bear Camp area (known to locals as notoriously sketchy, for a variety of reasons), or Peavine, which is nearby. Strange story.
