#missinghiker
Hello everyone today's case takes us to Vancouver Island to Strathcona Provincial Park in July of 2014, Sylvia Apps who was 69 years old at the time, and a very experienced hiker was heading out on a 5 day solo adventure. She was from BC herself and was a very experienced hiker. She set out for her journey on July 8, 2014 and was due back by July 13, around 4pm.
She was last seen on July 11, 2014 on Castlecrag Mountain within the park..
when she missed her rendezvous on July 13th, search crews were sent out and they immediately and starting finding odd clues.
pieces of her gear where found in all different areas. the Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue said it is the most "mystifying case" as they continued to find her belongings throughout the park but never found Sylvia.
she remains missing to this day.
if you have any information regarding this case please contact the RCMP or the Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Sylvia Apps., her family, loved ones and all those who worked so hard trying to find her🙏🙏
Thank you for watching and please be respectful in the comments if you choose to leave them 🙏

Hi. Does it seem that she was moving away from a cat - throwing her belongings at him to scare him off, as he pursued her? That's what I was picturing when he said that her items were scattered. I can see someone doing that. It must have eventually gotten her and dragged her off somewhere. What do you think based on your time there? (hearing of lion attacks that I assume must've happened from time to time) Thanks.

I live near the area we have way to many cougars! Over a thousand plus. Also there has been quite a few cougar attacks reported. I remember hearing about a family being stalked by one. There child was attacked but the father and a friend where able to fight off the cougar. If your alone in the wood there's a very slim chance of getting away unfortunately.

@@mainemermaid6596 this is a great theory and I can picture someone doing that. I know people like to go solo, I like to take solo bike rides (I'm 69) and I don't even go that far but as we get older, if we do run into trouble it's much harder to get away. I wish these solo hikers would take a trusted friend with them, they could even hike a little bit away from each other but keep each other within sight and then camp together at the end of the day. I hope they find her so the family can have closure!

I've stopped halfway to comment, it sounds like she was trying to leave a trail of breadcrumbs. There's no way a hiker would leave their pack. Everything she needs to survive is there. Sounds like she was forced to leave it and what would you do, leave anything hoping someone will find your trail... It's hard to say but I call foul play.

Just because you don't have the courage and independence to do something like this, doesn't mean others shouldn't. For you to say anyone, of any age, shouldn't pursue their passion to enjoy the wilderness is ridiculous. Some people are simply more adventurous than others. If you're afraid of living, stay home and "safe", but don't tell others they shouldn't be out there enjoying life!

It is mystifying that things were scattered. As well, offering my 2 cents without knowing the exact terrain the items were found leaves my suggestions as shots in the dark, but here goes. It does sound like possible "bread crumbs" she may have left to help with her recovery. Except for the backpack all in one piece. In the case of her backpack, I wonder if she dropped it in an attempt to flee from a mountain lion? If this was the case she may have had to flee and was either injured or lost her way. Would a cell phone offer any help if there is no signal? I just heard today of a hunter that was found after 53 years!! Over 200 people had been involved in his search 53 years ago. When his remains were found a large stone was resting on the lower portion of his remains, indicating that this stone probably caused his death. Searching a wilderness (like in this case) for a hiker can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. I feel so sorry for her family and hope that get some answers soon! Thanks for sharing!! Stay safe!!!

If they aren’t found in the initial searches I always find it strange that no one finds them sometimes after when people are moving so much in most of the areas people go missing. I visited Victoria, VA at Christmas/New year of 2007, for app 10 days and I didn’t take ONE photo of the trip cause it felt and looked so much like at home here in Sweden, I totally regret that now but I never thought about it. We did normal things and it felt so normal that I now only have the memories of the trip stored in my mind. I would really love to go back cause I really really liked it there. So if anyone here is from Victoria, you have a beautiful town and surroundings!

To me it sounds like she might have set down the back pack (maybe to take a break, or eat). Then she walked a short distance to take photos. At that point she either became lost (and didn't find the back pack again) or she fell off a cliff. Scattered gear could be her dropping things (and forgetting or losing them). Or it could be the wind blowing things around, and off of cliffs. Wind often does things like that high above tree line, and near cliffs.

I always see stories of people blending into the landscape trying to yell at a rescue helicopter or digging around looking for a piece of glass or mirror. When you're on the ocean flares are standard safety equipment because you're a needle in a haystack out there too.

I have been to Strathcona Park. It rains and rains there so any human tracks will soon be gone, same for scents using dogs to track. Now the Black bears on Vancouver are fairly aggressive, the cougars on the islands are very aggressive and a lot of them. So assume she was hurt, injured, then up become part of food chain.

If they found her items, but not Sylvia herself, she could have been attacked by someone. They hid her body, and threw her stuff everywhere as a distraction. I just can't she her having a fall, and leaving her items as she goes. They should have found Sylvia at the end of that trail.

I agree, and it seems that Sylvia was a victim of a homicide. She was far too experienced a hiker to have accidentally become lost or wandered off the trail. The fact that her belongings were found in different areas is definitely suspicious. Very sad and it's unlikely there will ever be an answer to this mystery.

It's literally the only logical conclusion I can come to for why you would ever drop your bag. Very weird case. If she was in real trouble, why she did not use her cellphone then? That kinda leads me to suspect that whatever happened, happened very fast. No time to use phone. I would use my phone if i would feel that i am under the danger. Just to note for somebody that things are getting wild here. If a person does not use his/her phone, then my only conclusion is that there was no time to do that. Things went south so rapidly. I have started to think while watching a lot of these kind of videos because it's so cold and dark in Finland in december, that why some many of these people are not found is because they are buried. Somebody has put them underground after killing. Animals can scatter remains too of course.
